Maid Of Ace - Bone Deth

"Sisters are doin' it for themselves"......

Yep, Hastings old school punk foursome Maid Of Ace comprise of 4 sisters; Alison (lead vocals/guitar), Anna (vocals/guitar), Amy (bass/backing vocals) and Abby (drums). Championed by legendary X Ray Spex frontwoman Poly Styrene, the girls came out of the womb rocking and played their first gig in 2005 at school. Since then they've shared a stage with The Buzzcocks, The Vibrators, The Casualties, Vice Squad, The Adolescents and Viv Albertine to name just a few. Influenced by the likes of Rancid and The Distillers (as well as colourful 80's indie rockers We've Got A Fuzzbox And We're Gonna Use It) these girls certainly know how to kick up a racket. 2014 has been a big year for them, a European tour, a debut s/t album and now the release of this kickass video for the track Bone Deth..........

Vertical strokers - Saturday girls

One of the best aspects of doing this blog is when someone draws my attention to a great old song that I'd previously never heard of, on this occasion it's a big thank you to Greg Mongroll for unearthing todays gem. I know absolutely sod all about The Vertical Strokers (they even appear to be misspelt on their sole youtube appearance) but from what I can quickly gather they hailed from Brighton and the only 2 songs I can find anywhere by them are Holidays and Saturday Girls. If anyone knows anything else please post your info in the comments section. This is Saturday Girls and it's far too good to be so obscure so please share it with your friends.....

Martha - 1967, I Miss You, I'm Lonely

Living life adhering to the principles of "anarchy, veganism and Irn Bru", Martha are the latest band from the north east of England to feature in this blog and they also share members with ONSIND and No Ditching who have been previous entries within these pages. From Durham, they play socially concious and highly infectious pop punk and have been compared to the everyone from The Buzzcocks through to Tullycraft though their dual lead vocals leave the listener in no doubt as to their origins. Their debut album, Counting Strong (listen here : http://marthadiy.bandcamp.com/album/courting-strong ), was recently released on Fortuna Pop and from it, this is the really rather excellent 1967, I Miss You, I'm Lonely......

The Nips - So Pissed Off

The Nipple Erectors, (who in 1978 changed their name to the more radio friendly moniker The Nips) formed in London in 1976 by bassist Shanne Bradley and are best remembered nowadays for featuring the vocal talents of notorious ear biting punk Shane O'Hooligan. I'm sure you all know he changed his name to MacGowan and went on to form Pogue Mahone, who became better known as The Pogues. As for Bradley, she went on to co-found The Men They Couldn't Hang. Before they went their seperate ways however, the band (who's original  line up also featured guitarist Roger Towndrow and drummer Arcane Vendetta) released a string of impressive singles (King Of The Bop, All The Time In The World, Gabrielle and Happy Song) as well as a live album called Only The End Of The Beginning (an anthology called Bops, Babes, Booze and Bovver was posthumously released in 1987 by Big Beat Records). Another famous name to be associated with the band was future Culture Club drummer Jon Moss who had a brief stint on drums before they split.

If you want to read more, there's a several good interviews online, including these : http://www.punkglobe.com/shannebradleyinterviewmay08.html
http://www.punk77.co.uk/groups/nippleerectorsshanneinterview.htm

Today's song is an outtake which didn't make it onto any of the singles but was added to the 1987 anthology, this is So Pissed Off....

The street where I live we don't give a shit
About the 70's reality or any of it
Spend the whole night on the piss
On my hands and my knees looking for a kiss

So I'm so pissed off, Fuck all that
So pissed off, Fuck all that
So pissed off, Don't need no one
So pissed off, too much fun

Everyday I meet with the boys from school
We go down the street, play a bit of pool
Put a coin in the juke, can't stop the tone
With the Jubillee trickle and the latest number ones

So pissed off, Fuck all that
So pissed off, Fuck all that
So pissed off, Don't need no one
So pissed off, too much fun

Well I don't need nothing except going on the booze
Don't need to read about people sniffing glue
Don't need no Ultra big TV
SAS Bastards the 70's reality
So pissed off, Fuck all that
So pissed off, Fuck all that
So pissed off, Don't need no one
So pissed off, too much fun

So pissed off, with the disco beat
So pissed off, with people I meet
So pissed off, with lively arts
So pissed off, with miserable farts

So pissed off, I get so tight
So pissed off, I'm feeling alright
So pissed off, but I'm no jerk
So pissed off, went right to work

So pissed off, I'm so pissed off
So pissed off, I'm so pissed off
So pissed off, I'm so pissed off
So pissed off, so pissed off!

The Queers - End It All

Yesterday's featured artists The Muffs released the original version of today's song on their 1995 Blonder And Blonder album. The song was covered by one of my favourite bands, The Queers, on the 2007 reissue of their classic album Don't Back Down (which had first seen the light of day in 1996). There's not many punk bands that can match Queers frontman Joe Queer (aka Joe King) when it comes to churning out harmonies to die for and his vocals on End It All are no exception to this rule. I assume everyone's familiar with the band so I don't really need to add much more except that Love Songs For The Retarded is pretty much as good as any album ever released and should be in everyone's collection (and several other of their albums aren't far behind), so without further ado, a sweet sounding song with a bitter centre, this is End It All.........

Everyone's wrong
And you can't get along
Will you take it easy
Or will you go end it all now

Someday you'll find
That you're out of your mind
Will you take it easy
Or will you go end it all now

Do you want to take the time now
Do you want to ease your mind
Will you take it easy
Or will you go end it all now

If you want it easy
You might as well end it all now

If you want to hurt another
If you want to hurt them now

You'll be gone forever
If you go end it forever
Will you go end it forever
Will you go end it all now

End it all now
End it all now

The Muffs - Lucky Guy

One of my favourite songs today. The Muffs were formed in 1991 in Los Angeles and originally consisted of Kim Shattuck (vocals/guitar), Melanie Vammen (guitar), Ronnie Barnett (bass) and Criss Crass (drums). Their self released singles brought them to the attention of Warner Brothers and led to the release of a s/t debut album in 1993 (from which the lead track is going to be featured below). After this Vammen and Crass left the band, Jim Laspesa took up drumming duties for a short while before being replaced with Roy McDonald and they've stayed with the Shattuck, Barnett, McDonald line up ever since. They've just released their first album in 10 years, called Whoop Dee Doo, it's as infectious as their early work and deserves your attention but as mentioned earlier, I'm posting one of their all time classic songs today (and if you come back tomorrow I'm posting another of their best songs but covered by one of my favourite bands), this is Lucky Guy.....

You and I are in danger
I don't stay in love that way
And the love of a stranger
Doesn't really make my day

And you know
You have a thousand things in front of you
Doin' anything you like
And takin' it easy
Is all you ever need to do

You've no ambition and only ever sit around
I don't know why
And you know it's true and you never wanted anything
You're a lucky guy
You're a lucky guy
Oh oh oh, you're lucky

There's a time, and a reason
You could go a long, long way
And for you it's so easy
Yeah, and it's your lucky day

[Repeat Chorus]

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
And you know
You've no ambition ...

Nots - Fix

After a couple of old classics we get back to 2014 today with the latest single by Memphis all girl trio Nots. Featuring former Ex-Cult bassist Natalie Hoffman on guitar, ex Manatees bassist Charlotte Watson on bass and rounded out with Moving Finger's drummer Laurel Ferdon, they released their debut ep, Dust Red, last year. Described on Soundcloud as wild punk and compared with the likes of Poly Styrene, Liliput, Slits etc, the girls' new 7" offering features the tracks Fix and Modern and is the type of passionate, shouty punk carnage that rewards repeat listening. It's released on Goner Records, as will be their debut album which is due in November. Turn up your volume, this is Fix......

Injections - Prison Walls

"Listen To Your Brother's Calls, Break Down Prison Walls...."

Another classic and wonderfully primitive oldie today, this time by San Diego's The Injections. Formed in 1978 and comprised of Lou Skum (vocals), Bruce Perreault (guitar), Lisa Astin (bass) and Joanne "Piggy Gargoyle" Norris (drums), the band only stayed together for around 3 years and during their lifetime they only released one single (a remastered "lost Album" originally recorded in 1980 but previously unreleased was put out by Italy's Rave Up Records in 2001). The single was given a deserved reissue in 2010 by Last Laugh Records and here's the A side, an impassioned rallying call against incarceration, this is Prison Walls (a free mp3 is available here - http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_3755410 ) ......

Chainsaw - What Goes On

1,2,5,7,8......  Ok their ability to count properly might be questionable but there's no doubting Chainsaw's aptitude when it comes to knocking out a killer cover version. Forming in Brussels, Belgium, in 1976 and featuring Jerry Wanker on guitar, Dee Dee on vocals, Micky Mike on bass and Bob Seytor on drums they released just one single. It was the See-saw ep and came out in 1977 on Romantik Records, it featured the songs What Goes On, Nuclear Apocalypse, Kill In The Blanks and Z'Heroes Guts. They didn't last much longer, splitting in 1978, but they deserve a shout out here for their scratchy and rather wonderful version of The Velvet Underground's What Goes On........

Top 10 Songs Chosen By Flora Watters (Primetime)

This week, at work, I've been in a different department to where I usually ply my trade and I've been subject to the delights of BBC Radio 1. I'm not really a listener to daytime radio but this week has hammered home to me how bloody awful contemporary commercial music currently is. Maybe I'm looking through rose tinted glasses but I'm sure that when I was part of Radio 1's target audience they at least played a few decent songs? I'd say that maybe it's because I'm too old and my tastes are archaic but fuck that, I think I have good taste so take all your overproduced, sanitised shite Radio 1 and stick it somewhere dark and dank. Personally, if I was controller of Radio 1 there would be a place amongst the dross for quality new music (and that place wouldn't be north of the witching hour where they think no one's awake). There would be a place for the Primetime's of this world, and the Wonk Unit's, The Murderburgers, Cyanide Pills, No Ditching's and all. Be honest readers, would you rather listen to the same old shit or would your pulse actually pick up a little if this new single by Primetime came blasting out of your speakers :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttaBp3GkdaI

If you like the single as much as I do (it's a contender for my record of 2014), it's available name your price here : http://lavidaesunmus.bandcamp.com/album/s-t-ep-2 .

Anyway, rant over. Moving on to the top 10 favourite ever songs as kindly selected by Primetime's Flora (AX) Watters........

 1) Pussy Galore - Dick Johnson (from Dial M For Motherfucker)

 2) Feral Beat - Cold Lover (from Cold Lover 7")

 3) Alan Milman Sect - Veil Of Strange (from Man-Ka-Zam)

 4) Grown Ups - Actually Bankrupt (from Stopped Caring)

 5) The Spits - Tired And Lonely (from Spits 1)

 6) UV Race - I'm A Pig (from Racism)

 7) Eddy Current Suppression Ring - Insufficient Funds (from S/T LP)

 8) The Intelligence - (They Found Me At The Back Of) The Galaxy (from Everybody's Got It Easy                                    But Me)

 9) Mika Miko - Business Cats (from C.Y.S.L.A.B.F.)

10) 100 Flowers - Contributions (from Drawing Fire)

In an alternative universe where I'm controller of Radio 1, you can have the 10-1 show instead of Fearne Cotton, Flora. Thanks for the chart and thanks for this link to the songs.........

This is the number 1 selection, it's called Dick Johnson and it's by Washington DC's Pussy Galore.....

Apologies, I Have None - Concrete Feet

Sat in Vicky Park, let it all out, to a bottle, on a bench. He said "This city is a criminal, a highwayman, a thief. It stole my perseverance, made off with my mental health, dumped me off of Tower Bridge with concrete on my feet and I'm struggling. I'm looking for some guidance, can you spare an ounce of strength so I can take this fucking sorry arse of mine back home to bed?" and the bottle, it said, "Everybody makes decisions they regret sometimes, everyone makes certain judgments based on plans that never seem to find their way to a conclusion. They change tack and double back on promises they made to themselves. But you won't find the answers at the bottle of a bottle, cheap cider never paved the way for any kind of progress to be made but for what its worth there's one thing that I know; You've got to let some parts die to let other parts grow." You'll always make mistakes, you'll always fuck shit up. You'll sometimes make bad choices and blame that shit on bad luck. You will often face decisions that you do not want to make and find your self on paths that you did not mean to take. There is always an answer, there is always a lesson, a lining of silver about every situation and asking for help is not the same thing as failing.

Formed in London in 2004 as a duo comprising of Dan Bond and Josh McKenzie, Apologies, I Have None took their name from a line in a song by Canadian hardcore band Grade. A couple of eps (Done & Two Sticks and SIx Strings) brought them much critical acclaim, a growing fanbase and more than a few comparisons to Against Me! Their escalating success led to them adding PJ Shepherd on bass and Joe Watson on drums and their upward momentum continued with the release of their debut album in 2012 (named London). Original member, Dan Bond, left in February of this year but they're carrying on as a 3 piece and in May released the Black Everything ep. Today's song can be found on their debut album and is called Concrete Feet.......

Lost Kids - Cola freaks

Another quickie today, this time from one of Denmark's first punk bands. Formed in 1978 in Aarhus and often compared to Scotland's The Rezillos, Lost Kids released 2 albums and 4 singles before splitting in 1982. Probably the best of those singles was their 2nd, a 3 track classic from 1979 which was recently re released on Sing Sing Records. From it, this is the rather wonderful Cola Freaks.....

The Stranglers - Goodbye Toulouse

Still struggling with my pc but managed to use someone else's for today's update so I'll pick a band that doesn't really need much of an introduction. The Stranglers have been around in one form or another for the last 40 years. They were originally called The Guildford Stranglers after the town in Surrey from which they hail but soon streamlined their name. You all know the many hits they've had so I won't bother with a discography, I'll just get to the point and post one of my favorite songs of all time. From their 1977 debut album Rattus Norvegicus, this is Goodbye Toulouse......

Your streets were paved with love
Your skies were blue
Goodbye Toulouse
I walked your streets in fear
I washed your streets with tears
Toulouse
Your cafes tell a tale
Of saddened millionaires
Toulouse
A million dreams I had
A million lies I told
Toulouse
Goodbye Toulouse
Goodbye Toulouse
Paula leaned out to me
From her high balcony
Toulouse
I will return some day
So you can hear me say
Farewell
Goodbye Toulouse
Goodbye Toulouse
Goodbye Toulouse

Steve Adamyk Band - Waiting For The Top

I'm struggling at the moment to update the blog due to my PC being knackered so the next one may be a few days away but please bear with me. In the meantime I'll try and post something though it'll probably look horrible. The Steve Adamyk Band have just released a new album called Dial Tone, it's packed full of pop punk and power pop goodies,  one of which is called Waiting For The Top and is posted below. Hopefully normal service will be resumed soon.

Groovie Ghoulies - Outbreak

How do you write a classic pop punk song? There must be a knack to it or else everyone would be doing it (actually, loads of people are doing it, or at least attempting to do it, but the majority fail). The best way seems to be keep things simple though like the majority, I'm not blessed with that rare gift of being able to pen a killer tune so what the hell do I know! One guy who is blessed with that gift is Kepi Ghoulie, who along with his wife Roach on guitars and a revolving door of other members, was the main man behind California's Groovie Ghoulies. Taking their name from the 70's tv series and inspired as much by horror and sci fi movies as they were by bubblegum rock n roll (as well as keeping things simple, many of the best pop punk bands seem to be inspired by horror and sci fi themes), they ran from 1983 to 2007 before the fallout from Kepi and Roach's divorce made keeping the band going difficult causing Kepi to go solo. During that time though, the band released an impressive body of work, it wasn't easy to single out just one track for posting but just to demonstrate the talent of creating a classic punk song by keeping things simple, this is from arguably my favourite album of theirs, Fun In The Dark, and is a cautionary tale about keeping your monkey under control. This is Outbreak.......

The Minds - Rip Out Your Eyes

I've never been to Portland, Oregon, I'm sure that I'll never get the opportunity to visit but I'm guessing if I ever did that I'd be in danger of tripping over a punk band. There seems to be a factory in Portland that churns out quality bands, today's blog update features one of them. Formed in 2003 and featuring members of a band called The Flip Flops, The Minds featured Joel Jett (aka The Thinker) on vocals, Rob Felkel ( aka Bobby Brains) on guitar, Jesse Elizondo (aka The Cortex) on bass, Cera Bella Palsy on keyboards and Mike Warm (Mikey Mind) on drums. They announced themselves to the world with the double whammy of a single (Rip Out Your Eyes) and an album (Plastic Girls), reviewers at the time were blown away by their infectious, upbeat new wave influenced garage punk. Very much at the forefront of their sound is Cera Bella Palsy's "mind-boggling hypnotic candy keyboard," like a hookworm it'll burrow it's way under your skin. They went on to release a couple more singles, I think they split up and then some of them got back together again in a band called The Thought Patterns but today I'm posting their catchy as fuck debut. Released on the excellent Alien Snatch label, this is Rip Out Your Eyes.....

The Dauntless Elite - Blitzar Radio (Yes I Can Hear You, Clem Fandango)

Before I decided in a moment of boredom to see what this blogging lark was all about I used to post punk music on a football fans forum called wacccoe (where pretty much no one was interested in punk music) and  back in 2007 I made Graft by The Dauntless Elite my album of the year (you can have a listen to it here http://music.thedauntlesselite.com/album/graft ). The band are from Yorkshire and got together when a couple of members of Joe Ninety joined forces with a couple from Fig.4.0. Their first release was 2004's Security ep and since then there's been 2 albums (Graft, More Bloody Bad News) and splits with a number of bands including The Because, The Mercury League, Jets Vs Sharks, The Steve Adamyk Band, Rumspringer, Mayflower and Calvinball. Some British bands have singers who try their best to sound American, not this lot though, they sound very much a product of their environment with gruff, proud Yorkshire vocals being very much at the forefront of their melodic punk sound. Not as active as they were a few years back they've still managed to get together long enough to record a new split, with Slow Science, on Bombed Out Records and from it, this is Blitzar Radio (Yes I Can Hear You, Clem Fandango)....

Rats In The Wall - Can't Cheat Karma

A classic song covered today. Zounds are an British Anarcho-Punk band who were formed in Reading in 1977. Taking their name from a William Shakespeare blasphemous oath which referred to the crucifixion wounds of Christ, they split in 1982 but as with many of the early punk bands they're reformed and still active. Their debut release was 1980's Can't Cheat Karma ep which was on Crass Records and featured the tracks War, Subvert and Can't Cheat Karma.
A cover of the title track of that ep has just appeared on Dead End which is the debut album by Huntington Beach, California's Rats In The Wall. Featuring former F-Minus and Leftover Crack vocalist/guitarist Brad Logan on guitar, Eva Hall on vocals, Mike Westcoe on bass and Donny Morris on drums they're definitely worth checking out.
A slice of original English punk rock that's still as relevant today, this is Can't Cheat Karma.....

One, two, three, go
I've got an ego
It won't let me go
And what am I gonna do?
A B C D
Paranoia's killing me
I'm dying on my aching feet
What a way to go
Roll up, roll up
People always stroll up
Say, "Why don't you grow up?"
No, thank you
Big cats, small cats
Some cats are fat cats
Those cats are bad cats
What we gonna do?
There's an awful lot of people in the world today
There's an awful lot of trouble on the streets these days
And it doesn't seem to matter what you do or say
If a change is gonna happen, got to help it on its way
A change is gonna come before too long, I know
Peace has gotta come along, could be wrong, I know
But I just don't know what I can do
You don't trust me and I don't trust you
I bet you wish you did and I know I do
Why have you got secrets? 'Cause I know you have
If you've got something to hide then it must be bad
A change is gonna come before too long, I know
Peace has gotta come along, could be wrong, I know
But I just don't know what I can do
You don't trust me and I don't trust you
I bet you wish you did and I know I do
Why have you got secrets? 'Cause I know you have
If you've got something to hide then it must be bad
A change is gonna come before too long, I know
Peace has gotta come along, could be wrong, I know
But I just don't know what I can do

The Dwarves - Sluts of the USA

I've been doing this blog as a labour of love, posting songs which I think are great and deserve shouting about, since the arse end of 2013. In that time the song that has received the most views is a cover of The Dwarves' One Time Only by The Holograms. I'm not sure why (maybe it's because The Dwarves are young and good looking) but it's had over twice as many hits as any other song. So although I usually try to post songs by lesser well known bands and steer away from the giants of punk rock, today I'm shamelessly chasing visitors and hoping lightning strikes twice.

I don't really need to write much of an intro about The Dwarves as I'm sure anyone who loves punk is already familiar with them but I'll mention that they're currently based in San Francisco, they comprise of a multitude of band members (including one of the best vocalists in the business in Blag Dahlia) and they've released some excellently subversive punk n roll records that you should check out... http://thedwarves.bandcamp.com/   (though I'm sure most of you already have). This month sees the release of their excellent new album, The Dwarves Invented Rock 'n' Roll from which comes this song, Sluts Of The USA.......

Top 10 Songs Chosen By Jason Rowland (The Great Dismal Swamis)

A Big thanks today to Jason Rowland for not only selecting his top 10 songs since 1990 (he couldn't manage to select his top 10 of all time as there were too many songs to consider) but for also providing info on them. Jason is vocalist with Norfolk, Virginia garage punk band The Great Dismal Swamis who's new single, Phantom Tollbooth, is reviewed here ( http://thugbrarianreview.wordpress.com/2014/08/05/set-list-the-great-dismal-swamis-phantom-tollbooth-45/ ) and can be heard here ( http://thegreatdismalswamis.bandcamp.com/ ).... Their self titled 2013 album is also available name your price from the same address. Without further ado, this is Jason's selection and the song I've chosen as song of the day is his number 1 pick.....

1) Teengenerate "Let's Get Hurt" The Great Teengenerate. Can't go wrong here..could pick a variety of songs from these guys, but this particular track appears on both LPs (Get Action and Smash hits), as well as on 45. They occasionally reunite, released a documentary film in 2013, "Get Action," and still perform around Tokyo with their other bands "Firestarter" and "the Raydios." Turn it ON.

2) M-80s- "57 Nomad" This track was part of the Estrus Gear Box comp, released in 1991. Undoubtably, the M-80s, were one of the most powerful garage punk RNR bands, of the early 90s. They released a few 45s, a full length LP on Get Hip, and The "Red" album (CD) which coincidentally, was Black Lung Records first release. **I very much hope someone or record label reissues this album as a double LP. Listen to this!!!

3) The Points "Rock N Roll No Rules" --- From the Big Action Records split 45 w/ Maaster Gaiden. The Points, from Washington DC/ Virginia, released a few 45s and a full length album. Trashy rock n roll, fueled by untamed energetic savage songwriting, in combination with this machine like thumping backbeat. They have "it" and always will....Real rock n roll. If you were lucky enough to see them perform, then you know why they are on this list.

4) Hex Dispensers "I've Got My Doppelganger On" Again, Texas. From the album, "Winchester Mystery House" Probably one of my favorite records in the last 10 years. Spooky ectoplasm punk rock.

5) Pearl Schwartz "Sweet Seventeen" This is a rarity...but one of my favorite tracks on my favorite record label. "Sweet Seventeen" appears on the Pearl Schwartz 45 on Black Lung Records. Members of the Devil Dogs, 5678s, Jet Boys. Absolutely killer.

6) Candy Snatchers "Drunken Blur" The best band I've ever seen perform. Real rock n roll...punk rock... Whatever. These guys are the real deal. Alive and Dangerous!!! The best.

7) Marked Men "Blew my Head" Texas. This is the final track, off the Marked Men's "Ghosts" LP. I dig their first album the most, and this one gets a pinch too poppy, at times, for my taste, nonetheless, the songs are very well crafted and enjoyably catchy. This track in particular strikes my attention because of the melodic guitar, intertwined with this incredible vocal delivery. Couple of the members, including Mark Ryan, are now in Radioactivity, and have released an album and some 45s, that continue the sonic sounds of the Marked men,

8) The Vicious "Walking Dead" A very short lived band, that released full length LP entitled, "Alienated," and a couple other 45s on Feral Ward. This Swedish band toured the east coast of the USA, and then broke up and members formed Masshysteri. In reality, I find most of the Vicious' tracks interesting, but the "Walking Dead" is on another level.

9) Reatards "Sick When I See" Some people will pledge that "Teenage Hate" was the best LP released by the Reatards, but I lean towards "Grown Up, Fucked Up" as the gem out of all their releases. Regardless, Jay Reatard's vocal patterning on "Sick when I see," make this a classic in my book.

10) Quadrajets "Goin' Down" - Released as a 5" on SFTRI, as well as on a Sub Pop full length LP. Quadrajets, from Alabama, put out a bunch of killer 45s and LP during the 90s. Members went on to do Immortal Lee County Killers. Very under appreciated RNR band.

Pink, Plastic & Panties - Bla-Bla

There's nothing I like more when compiling this blog than discovering a great new band and shouting out loud about how great they are in the hope that others will discover them too. After that, the thing I like most is posting a classic, pretty much forgotten old song that hopefully people haven't yet heard but will quickly fall in love with. Hopefully that will be the case today.

One of my favourite post punk singles is Die/Matrosen/Split by legendary Swiss band Liliput. If you've never heard it you're missing out on one of the greatest records ever released and you need to rectify the situation immediately. Imagine my delight when I discovered another euro post punk single that pretty much matches that peerless release. Pink, Plastic & Panties were an all girl band from The Netherlands whom I know pretty much nothing about. Aside from the one killer single, I think their only other release was a split album (a 1981 collaboration called Rock Tegen De Rollen which also featured tracks by Nixe, Pin-Offs and Removers). The single I'm concentrating on today was released in 1980 on Not On Label. The b side was called Anger and is great ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2VxWE8qBXs ), the a side is even better (though I'm guessing it could annoy the shit out of some people!). This is Bla-Bla......

Idiot Talk - Girls Hate Me

This week I seem to have been zipping back and forth between the USA and Britain with my updates and I think that even though there's a decent amount of quality music from elsewhere in the world in this blog, I really should try a little harder to find and then post more. Today I can do that as I've been slapped around the face by a great self titled album from Idiot Talk. I know very little about them; they're from Lille, France. It's claimed that they play 80's hardcore punk rock with some '77 hints (though to me they just seem to grab all the best bits of punk music, the upbeat tempo, the power, the catchy tunes, the enthusiasm etc and blend them all together into something infectious that leaves you gagging for more). A demo in 2010 was followed up the following year by the release of a self titled ep  which you can get free here : http://buildmeabombrecords.bandcamp.com/album/self-titled-ep-2 . 2011 also saw the release of a split ep with Germany's Napoleon Dynamite. Taking things up a level, 2013 brought us the aforementioned st album which is also free.... http://buildmeabombrecords.bandcamp.com/album/self-titled

This song is called Girls Hate Me and it's gonna get you off your ass and bouncing round the room whilst grinning like a loon.....

The Varukers - How do you sleep ?

Yesterday we had a bit of quality American hardcore punk, today it's Britain's turn to prove we can rock out with the best of them. Coming together in 1979, in Leamington Spa, The Veruccas soon changed their name to the more aggressive sounding The Varukers. Like a number of bands of that era, they took the established template of punk rock and made it a touch heavier. Since then they've produced a solid back catalogue of socially concious political punk rock and played a countless number of gigs to a rabid fanbase. They split in 1989 after most of the band had left to form a new band called Sacrilege, but were reformed in 1991 by founder and vocalist Rat and longstanding guitarist Biff. Despite lending their talents to other bands (Rat to Discharge and Biff to Sick On The Bus) they still found time to tour the world (America, Japan, New Zealand, Australia etc...) and to release plenty of new material, including the 2000's How Do You Sleep? album, from which the title track is featured below.......

Humanitarian crisis, I've seen it on TV
Looking for handouts, looking straight at me

No feelings, no grief, no sense
How do you sleep

I really wonder sometimes with no pennies for the poor
Where they find the millions for senseless fucking war

Authorities - I Hate Cops

Lets have something hard and fast today. Released in 1982 on Selecta records, the Soundtrack For Trouble ep by Stockton, California's Authorities is now considered somewhat of a classic. The ep's lead track, Achtung, was covered by Screeching Weasel on their Kill The Musicians album whilst Career Suicide released a live cover of track 3, Radiationmasturbation. Forming at the end of the 70's, the band played their first gig on Feb 2nd 1979, the day that Sid Vicious died. Despite the tragic death of founder member Nick Kappos in 1989, 2 other original members, Brian Thalken and Curtis Clyde Hall, have got the band back together, complimented with Graham Johnston, Iain Ross and Orville Lancaster. From Soundtrack For Trouble, this is the excellent I Hate Cops......

I hate cops
They're all fucking piggers
They all have mustaches
They squeak when they walk

I hate cops
I hate cops
I hate cops

We're doing nothing wrong
We're only having fun
And out come the cops
And they got their guns

I hate cops
I hate cops
I hate cops

We're doing nothing wrong
We're only shooting up
And out come the cops
They say "put 'em up"

I hate cops
I hate cops
I hate cops
