  Today's song is the one I played at the end of last night's Just Some Punk Songs show (a pretty apt choice I thought).

The Dear Boys - I Hope You Know How Fucking Cool You Are

"You’re the greatest you’re the latest you’re that superstar..."

Do you remember back in the day when we had punk pioneers such as The Pistols, The Clash, The Damned etc. 3 chords, attitude and some spiky melody? Do you remember we also had the likes of Wreckless Eric, Ian Dury, TV Personalities etc. DIY acts that weren't quite punk but comfortably fit under that umbrella. Today's song reminds me of them.

The Dear Boys are from Bexhill On Sea in East Sussex. They're a trio made up of Tony Page, Tony Fletcher & Brett Buddy Ascott and last month they released their first single of 2026 (their 5th physical release). It's part of the build up to an album which is planned for later this year. 

Dedicated to the next generation, it's a song that seeks to promote self worth. Get out there kids, the world is yours. Take it. You're great!

Half Man Half Biscuit - Horror Clowns Are Dickheads

  

  Birkenhead's top beat combo Half Man Half Biscuit are back today with a typically rib tickling tune. They've been a Just Some Punk Songs favourite for decades before Just Some Punk Songs was even a thing and have brightened up these pages several times (including this classic  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/05/half-man-half-biscuit-knobheads-on-quiz.html).

Neon Kittens - Don't Get Me Started

  

  Maybe you remember New Years Eve 2023. It was the 10th anniversary of Just Some Punk Songs and it was the day I first featured a song by York band Neon Kittens (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100088163643448). I commented; "they're a band that are unlikely to ever be part of the mainstream, they very much dance to their own beat."

  Well that sentiment is front and center of the opening track of the band's new album. These are the lyrics :

Stuart Pearce - Nuclear Football (Guest Review By Martin Carter)

  

I First came aware of Stuart Pearce from Nottingham when Mick kindly sent me a link to their Bandcamp page telling me that they were similar in sound to The Fall whom I've been a diehard fan of since first hearing them in 1978. Without hesitation I clicked on the link and started to listen to some tracks from their debut album "Red Sport International". I could immediately hear the Fall sound influences in some of the tracks but obviously they were more than a direct copy but also had some great ideas of their own and I pre-ordered the red vinyl without hesitation. It is now one of my favourite albums from last year and one I regularly listen to.

Onto this new release which has one studio recording "Nuclear Football" which is another great track in the same vein as their previous tracks. An upbeat keyboard led song with great vocals and lyrics on one of their favourite topics "football" . There are four more tracks on the EP which were all recorded live and sound excellent including a live version of the lead track. I would love to see them live at some point in the near future and based on the sound of this it would be well worthwhile. They are back in the Studio in February to record their follow up album according to their Instagram page which I'm already looking forward to hearing. I've always been passionate about music and the older I get finding something that sounds fresh and hits the target gets less and less often but Stuart Pearce are definitely high scorers. The Kurls - Frankenbabes (From Beyond the Grave)

  Another Halloween friendly tune for you today from a new band called The Kurls. They're a duo from LA featuring Samantha Westervelt (Egg Drop Soup, Death Valley Girls) on vocals, bass and keyboards and Travis Pavur (The Alright Alrights) on drums, guitar and percussion. 

  They've just released a debut single which will also be the theme song from Andrew Bowser's upcoming short film Frankenbabes from Beyond the Grave.

Spiritual Cramp - Talkin' On The Internet

  

  It's a busy time for San Francisco sextet Spiritual Cramp. Not only are they about to embark on a mammoth tour which will see them trek around The States before popping across the pond to play a number of UK/Ireland gigs, they're also gearing up for the release of a new Self Titled album.

The Pretty Flowers - Another Way To Lose

  

  So what was the most popular song on this week's Just Some Punk Songs show with the people who were listening in the chatroom? Probably this one...

  The Pretty Flowers (https://www.facebook.com/ThePrettyFlowers) are Noah Green (vocals/guitar), Sam Tiger (bass/vocals), Jake Gideon (Guitar/Vocals/Keyboards/Omnichord/Percussion) & Sean Johnson (drums/percussion), a punk/indie quartet from Los Angeles. I don't think I've come across them before but a look at their Bandcamp link shows they've been pretty prolific over the last 8 years. 

  Their new album (their 2nd) has hit my radar though. It's titled A Company Sleeve and it's one of those rare records that should be getting picked up by all the top indie rock radio stations out there as it's catchy enough for mainstream ears... but at the same time, it doesn't bore me. (Another of these type of records is Asleep In The Ejector Seat by the Heat Inc which will no doubt feature on here next Friday when it hits the record shop shelves).

Cheekface – (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding

 

  Today's song was written by Nick Lowe and released by his band Brinsley Schwarz on their 1974 album The New Favourites of... Brinsley Schwarz. The most famous version was released a few years later by Elvis Costello & the Attractions.

  Cheekface are a trio from Los Angeles comprising of Amanda Tannen (bass guitar and backing vocals), Greg Katz (vocals and guitar) & Mark Echo Edwards (drums and percussion).

Regal Cheer - Tenner

  

  As usual at this time of the week, I've been polishing up the playlist for the latest's Just Some Punk Songs show (Sunday at 8pm UK time https://gpr.mixlr.com/) and I notice that another of the legendary 70's punk bands have unveiled a new single and after a listen I've decided to give it a miss. It'll get plenty of attention elsewhere and let's be honest, it's nowhere near as exciting as some of the awesome music being released by a host of hungry new up and comers. Bands that still have fire burning in their bellies. Bands like this...

  Regal Cheer (https://www.facebook.com/regalcheer) are a duo from Brighton; Max Cleworth (Guitar/Vocals) and Harry Menear (Drums/Vocals). They've just released a very energetic and highly impressive debut album titled Cans. I've already played a couple of the singles from it on the show so today I'll showcase one of the other tracks.

  If you haven't heard them yet, you're in for a treat. They're simultaneously angry and joyful, the subject matter of the songs can be dark but it's all performed with great gusto. It's one of those albums from which you can't find a duff track. Stop reading and go check it out. Bilk - Just Don't Work For Me

   

  Bilk (https://www.facebook.com/bilkbandpage) are a fresh faced indie punk trio from Essex who are on very much of an upward trajectory. Lining up with Sol Abrahams (vocals/guitar), Luke Hare (bass) & Harry Gray (drums), they play a similar sort of music to south London trio Play Dead, maybe Manchester's finest Aerial Salad ae a decent comparison too. I've played them on the show a few times but with the upcoming release of their debut album it's a good time to mention them on here. 

  I was going to feature their recently released Be Someone video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKfguwYVzgo) but as they unveiled another new song yesterday I'll go with that one instead. 

  The album will feature both tracks (plus another song that came out as a single earlier this year and has been chosen by a listener of the show (who said about it "I love the fact they’re a bunch of young lads. Dinosaur Skull - Alleyway

  

  Dinosaur Skull (https://www.facebook.com/DinosaurSkull) are two members of Werecats (they featured on here back in 2018 https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/11/werecats-dog.html); Cici (guitar/vocals) and Mike (bass/vocals) ably backed by their trusty drum machine. They've just released an album on Grow Your Own Records titled Tales From The Heath. 

  When I first started listening, I was a little thrown. It was different to what I was expecting from a label who are known and loved for releasing political and anarchic punk music. A label who's recent output has been from the likes of Armoured Flu Unit, Omega Tribe, Virus, 51st State... 

  How do Dinosaur Skull fit in. They're quite poppy, they get your toes tapping. They've written a love song to their dog Meadow. It's an upbeat album on a label that usually concentrates more on the political and the unjust elements of our society. 

  And then you listen closer and realise that Cici is writing lyrics about stuff that's personal to her, about "life experiences and social maladies." It's social commentary with a deceptively warm and fuzzy coating. It's another welcome addition to the Grow Your Own Catalogue.

The Crime Scene Cleaners - Mental Health City

 

  I first stumbled across The Crime Scene Cleaners a couple of months ago when I was impressed by their Cops On Coke single. They're from London and claim to have zero ability, rudimentary musical insight and to play talentless sub standard ghetto rock. As my grandad might have said, they talk shite.

  They're actually very good.

Breakup Haircut - I Don't Wanna Be Your Friend

  

  Anyone fancy an energetic burst of UK pop punk? 

  Breakup Haircut (https://www.facebook.com/breakuphaircut) are a quartet from London featuring Ishani Jasmin (Rhythm guitar/vocals), Delphine Thenet (Lead guitar/vocals), Emma Ripley (Bass/vocals) &  Jordan Dilger (Drums). They released an album in July with the rather great title of Punk Dancing For Self Defence. Put together over a longer than normal timespan due to various Covid lockdowns it boasts "15 tracks - old, new and newer - touching on breakups, boundary-setting, social anxiety, bi-erasure, and above all, existing under capitalism."  There's some wonderful moments on there. One highlight, Why Can't I Be Cool Enough To Move To Berlin? featured on the Just Some Punk Songs show a few months ago, another (the song you'll find below) will feature this week. Other unmissable tracks include single Marie Kondo, Out Of My Way (I'm Not Getting On The Nightbus) and Mum I Wanna Be A Greaser.

Midland Railway - She Loves Ted Bundy

  

  A gentle, uplifting song today about a woman who was obsessed with a charming psychopath.

  Based in Manchester, Midland Railway are Nick Lote (vocals, guitar), Sarah Mac Fhearadhaigh Blemings (bass, vocals), Terry Yow (drums), Dan Newbery (guitar), Kate-mia White (guitar) and Robert Hayton (guitar, vocals). They play a form of nerdy folk-punk, influenced by the likes of Weezer, Bright Eyes and The Smiths. Despite them having formed in 2004, I'd not come across them before until I heard their new single. It's not your standard punk rant (it's more Television Personalities than Sex Pistols) but it's still very enjoyable. 

  One of the reasons I may not have been familiar with the band is that for much of the time since their conception they seem to have been split up. They've shown intermittent signs of life since first separating in 2008 but it now looks like they're in rude health with an album being planned.

  Theodore Robert Bundy was an American serial killer who kidnapped, raped, and murdered numerous young women and girls during the 1970s and possibly earlier. After more than a decade of denials, he confessed to 30 murders he committed in seven states between 1974 and 1978. The titular woman in this song is in love with him. Barry - No More Boys

  

  Something a little bit different today.

  Barry (https://www.facebook.com/barryband/) are a 4 piece from London. None of the band members are called Barry. They're called Helen, Mark, Kathy & Bart. According to their Bandcamp page they're a queercore band. They're also fun and seem to have a happy knack of writing songs that stick in your head.

 

  They recently released a single called Neolithic Homosex. It's 2 tracks of the kind of music that used to be performed by bands who wore t shirts saying Twee As Fuck and who "woke up every morning to the sound of Sarah records on a compilation tape her friend had sent to her from Paris."

  The A side is a perfectly fine song about gay sex in the age of the cavemen (and cave women) but it's the cute as fuck flip side that's got me smitten.

Boyracer - Fleetwood Mac Are Shite

  

  Today I bring you the best Fleetwood Mac related song since Mike Rogers from The Rotters invited Stevie Nicks to sit on his face (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKtASyCinfc).

  

  Hopefully you're all familiar with Boyracer. Formed in Wetherby by vocalist/guitarist Stewart Anderson in 1990, they blurred the lines between indie and punk with a string of cool releases on labels such as Sarah Records and Slumberland. They've remained a band worth keeping an eye on despite numerous line up changes and a move to Flagstaff, Arizona. They've featured on here several times, most recently with a track from their 13th album On A Promise  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2020/05/boyracer-hit-and-miss.html

Ledzepvietcong - Wet Shoes

 

  Ledzepvietcong are the Kumamoto (Japan) based trio that featured on here almost exactly a year ago with a track from their split album with Born Shit Stirrers  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2021/04/ledzepvietcong-all-liquored-up.html

  They're back with a 3 track ep (2 new tunes and an acoustic version of the title track) titled Wet Shoes which once again has been released by UK label Serial Bowl Records.   This is what vocalist Jay Onyskin has to say about the title track; "The song Wet Shoes came to be by watching 3 of my kids making squishy sounds with their wet shoes. Sometimes he would set an ice cold beer on the small table before a take, then I would just Just sling on a guitar and sing some imperfect vocals"

The Hazmats - Empty Rooms

  

  The Hazmats are from London and feature members of Chubby And The Gang (https://chubbyandthegang.bandcamp.com/), Game (https://qualitycontrolhq.bandcamp.com/album/no-one-wins) and Big Cheese (https://bigcheesehc.bandcamp.com/) but whilst those bands play hard hitting variations on the hardcore punk and oi genres, The Hazmats are an entirely different proposition altogether. They're kinder on your eardrums. They're more akin with the kind of bands that used to be corralled together under the jangle pop label than anything the various members have done previously (although granted, Chubby And The Gang aren't adverse to mixing their albums up by adding the occasional gentler track). Don't think I'm saying they're veering towards the twee end of the indie pop spectrum, I'm not, they're a little heavier than that but they still manage to have a similar melodic infectiousness. 

  They've just released their debut single. Sniff - Namaste The Fuck Away From Me

  

  Today, a song that's really grown on me during the last week or so. 

  First things first, what the hell does Namaste mean? Is it just me that didn't have a clue? 

  A quick spot of googling reveals it directly translates as  "the divine in me bows to the divine in you." It's a traditional Hindu greeting and it's the common greeting in yoga, a gesture to send a message of peaceful spirituality to the universe in the hopes of receiving a positive message back.

  So now you know.

  Next up, Sniff (https://www.facebook.com/sniffbanduk) are the indie-punk project of Alex Smith (from Falmouth band Bobby Funk https://bobbyfunk.bandcamp.com/ ). You may recall there was a debut Self Titled ep released last year, a song from which featured on this blog (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2021/10/sniff-queer.html).

 

  Now there's a follow up. It's called Another EP, and it's equally enjoyable. It's a modern take on the genre, it's energetic, catchy and fun. It's a shouty, fresh sounding sound that'll go down well with fans of bands like Slaves.
