It's a very fine compilation of melodic punk tunes with a mix of both male and female vocals. Fans of the likes of Accidente and Rotura will lap it up.
This track was originally released in 2014 on an ep titled No Nos Mata La Muerte. It's called Vértigo...
Female fronted Glam Punk Rock n Roll from New York City today from a band who describe themselves as sounding like The Shangri-Las backed up by The Undertones covering The Dead Boys.
Cruiser released their debut 7" ep last August on cool Italian label Surfin Ki Records. "Featuring 4 smashing hits!" you can check it out on Bandcamp here : https://surfinkirecords.bandcamp.com/album/s-t-7
The line up features Tory, Gabbie, Avalon and Alan and influences include The Boys, Supercharger, Rip Off Records, sex, drugs, rock & roll.......
The ep teases with the promise of great things to come, pick of the bunch? Probably the catchy as hell I Needa Drink. Cheers guys, this is a winner.....
Dog Company are from Dallas, Texas and formed in 2004. The line up features ex Staggers vocalist/guitarist Joe Blow as well as Garrett Chapman (lead guitar/backing vocals), Shea Close (bass/backing vocals) and Micko Villarreal (drums).
Playing a brand of political punk rock in a similar vein to the likes of The Street Dogs, Hudson Falcons, Bad Religion etc they released their first album, Songs Of Discontent, in 2008 and followed it a couple of years later with A Bullet For Every Lie. 2014 saw the release, on Cadre Records, of War Stories which New Noise Magazine called "a viciously executed slice of invigorating punk." Earlier this year they contributed a couple of track to a split ep with Hard Evidence. You can check out a couple of those albums here : https://dogcompany.bandcamp.com/
Plans are afoot for them to get back in the studio at the end of the year and a new record is pencilled in for the spring. To keep you going till then, this is a track from War Stories called Elected Enemy....
A couple of days ago I did a Just Some Punk Songs North London Bomb Factory special show and it seemed to go down very well with those who listened live. An added bonus for those that were in the chatroom was that Daniel Husayn joined us to discuss the songs that had all been mastered by himself, he revealed he's working on a number of new projects (over 50 if I remember rightly, one of them being a new record by Eat//Read//Sleep who feature members of Hysterese). Anyone who would like to hear the show, it's saved here : http://mixlr.com/mick-fletcher/showreel/just-some-punk-songs-170717/
Today, I'm posting a song by a band that proved very popular on the show. Hysterese are from Tubingen, Germany and have released a couple of very decent self titled albums : https://hysterese.bandcamp.com/. They play dark, melodic, catchy punk that features both male and female vocals and has drawn comparisons with the likes of Red Dons, Masshysteri, Autistic Youth and Wipers. The line up features Helen (vocals/guitar), Haug (vocals/bass), Kai (drums) and Moritz (guitar).
On the show I played Asperger Youth so today I'll go with another song from the 2nd album, this is Cancer & Cake.....
he got cancer and he got cake why is it not the other way round? there is no such thing like a punchline and i ask the wrong questions and i know that since like forever but it doesn't get better anyway life fades into nothing
Crimedesk are from Glenrothes in Scotland and formed way back in 1979 following the demise of The Burnt Curtains and released a single called Arms Race on local label Newtown Products. Since then they've been together sporadically with varying line ups but in 2014 they released an album called Tales Of Crime. They released a single from it called Another Umbrella and there was also an ep titled Manky Hoor.
A 3 piece, they line up with Alan Cormie (guitar/vocals), Alan Goodsir (bass/vocals) and John Sinclair (drums/vocals). They've been keeping busy gigging and writing new material.
This song was on their album and it comes with a video featuring various local youths and a shopping trolley!. UR.........
I've a song for you today that I only recently had brought to my attention (thanks Paolo Merolla) but which is fantastic. It's by a band who formed in the Derkovits district in Szombathely, Hungary, in 2002. They're called Derkovbois and their music is a mixture of street punk, rock n roll and real oi.
Their first release was a 6 track demo in 2003 and they followed it up a year later with 3 tracks on a split with Youngang. Their debut album, Mindent Egy Lapra came out in 2005 and the ep Paprika, Shamrock, Pride saw the light of day in 2008.
Following a 6 year gap, their most recent album, Szabotazs! was released in September 2014. You can check it out here : https://derkovbois.bandcamp.com/album/szabot-zs. The line up of the band as far as I'm aware is Peter Farkas, Pedro Cavallo, Lezer Raptor, Imre Balna and Attila Nemeth.
I know very little else about the band but I do know that the song you'll find below, Bomba, builds slowly before breaking out into one of the catchiest gang vocal singalongs you'll hear.........
Télen a jégen, nyáron a hőben, Egy generáció elveszőben Az a néhány dal, az a pár akkord, Mi toljuk akkor is hogyha nem akarod,
Ma a haverok előtt, holnap a klubban, Újra a punk rock bomba robban, A munkának vége kijössz a gyárból, A hétvégén újra indul a punk rock, hejjjj!!!!
A zene robbanószer Ha a kanócot meggyújtod egyszer A punkrock bomba újra robban És belül a tűz majd újra lobban
Amit felemészt a hétköznap Az hétvégén újra lángra kap A problémák hada várhat Punk rock a király! Élj a mának!
(English lyrics)
On ice in winter, in the heat in summer A generation is disappearing But those few song, those few accords We play even if you don't want it
Today in front of friends, tomorrow in the club The punk rock bomb explodes again The work is over, you leave the factory Punk rock starts again at the weekend. Hey!
The music is an explosive If you light the fuse once The punk rock bomb explodes again The fire inside burns up again
What the weekdays take away That catches fire in the weekend again Problems can wait Hail to the Punk Rock! Live for today!
"Working folk get conned they think ukip are all right but nigel and his friends would piss on them from a great height"
You'll probably know of Attila The Stockbroker but for those few who haven't had the pleasure, he was born John Baine in 1957, is from Southwick (near Brighton, England) and since the late 70's has been writing and performing his surreal brand of folk and punk inspired poetry.
In 1994 he formed Barnstormer and regularly tours Europe with them. He still also plays many live solo shows and last year Cherry Red published his autobiography, Arguments Yard (35 Years of Ranting Verse and Thrash Mandola).
"They're the best English band at the moment in my opinion. Big claim I know but I can listen to their songs for a week solid and still not be bored of them."
So said Eric Evans of Just Some Punk Songs' favourites Modern Tribes. He was referring to Moose Blood, an emo band from Canterbury, England who have signed to Hopeless Records and will soon be releasing a new single called Honey. There's a new album set to follow later this year.
Forming in 2012 they released an album in 2014 on No Sleep Records called I'll Keep You In Mind, From Time To Time and it's from that record that today's song (recommended by Eric) is taken.
The band (Eddy Brewerton, Mark Osborne, Glenn Harvey and Kyle Todd) are currently on a tour of the UK that has seen all dates sell out in advance. They'll also be playing The Truck Festival in Oxfordshire in July (alongside The Manic Street Preachers and a host of others). The new single will debut this Sunday so watch out for that but this is the song I mentioned earlier, it's called Bukowski.....
Bukowski's growing old this coffee's getting cold I guess I'll never know why you closed the window Start reading Hemingway start drinking cups of Earl Grey then I guess maybe one day.. I'll be yours forever I'm the best book you'll never read you make me feel like Jimmy Dean you make me feel like Morrissey when you undress from your best dress..
To keep warm, I'll bring a sweater you can have mine, it looks better and honestly, you can take it home.
To keep warm, I'll bring a sweater you can have mine, it looks better and honestly, you can take it home. You can take it home.
We'll take blankets to stay safe I'll do my best to stay out of your way then I guess maybe one day, I'll be yours forever I'll introduce you to Clarity teach you the words to The Sound Of Settling make you watch High Fidelity on a Sunday, maybe one day...
To keep warm, I'll bring a sweater you can have mine, it looks better and honestly, you can take it home.
To keep warm, I'll bring a sweater you can have mine, it looks better and honestly, you can take it home, you can take it home.
To keep warm, I'll bring a sweater you can have mine, it looks better and honestly, you can take it home.
Thanks to that bastion of good taste Ashley Colman for pointing me in the direction of today's song. It's not the first time I've discovered great music because of him and I'm sure it won't be the last.
Hazard have been together since 2010 and are from Luton, England. According to their Facebook profile, they're currently unsigned but after a long break from touring they're now back on the road with a number of gigs scheduled, culminating in an appearance at the Rebellion Festival in August.
A 3 piece featuring Conor Hussey (guitar/vocals), Josh Murphy (bass/vocals) and Joe Smith (drums/vocals), their releases thus far include a single called Machine, a self titled ep and their 2014 debut album Nothing Changes. You can check them out here : http://hazardbanduk.bandcamp.com/.
Influenced by the likes of The Clash, Rancid, Johnny Thunders, Nirvana and a host of others but adding their own fresh spin to the classic punk sound, this is a song off the album called Police Oppression......
Police Oppression, cracking down on kids again. Hey man, what did I do? To be honest I have no clue. I'm out now, I need to go. Gotta get ready for that rock show. Hey man, who I am? I'm just your number one fan.
I don't wanna walk at the streets at night. Can't be asked to wait around and fight my way back home.
Dancing away to my favorite song, haven't seen my friends in so long. They're out there smoking weed, I refrained as it made my eyes bleed. The police just walk right in, looked like they'd hit the jackpot win. They round up everyone, now breaking rocks in the red hot sun.

4 Minute Warning are from Denver, Colorado and feature Bad Engrish's Bram Swanson (bass/vocals) plus Snoopy (lead guitar/vocals), Kyle Atwell (rhythm guitar/vocals) and Brooks Hotchkiss (drums). They're a band that won't be delivering any serious political messages, they just want to get drunk and have fun whilst the world blows itself to pieces. There's not much music yet available by them online (though hopefully that will change with the release of their new record in April) but you can listen to a few songs here : https://www.reverbnation.com/4minutewarning4
The Avoiders are a hard edged punk band from Ridge, Long Island, New York who comprise of John Browne (vocals), Craig (guitar), Dan McKasty (bass), Leppie (drums) and Joe Maher (guitar). Influenced by the likes of Rancid, Dead Kennedys, Authority Zero, The Misfits, Casualties, Bad Religion, The Descendents, Sublime etc they announced themselves in 2014 with the 7 track procrasti-NATION ep : http://theavoiders.bandcamp.com/album/procrasti-nation.
2016 will see them release a new cd.
Today's update features a really great fuzzy/power pop song by Bad Zeppelin which came out around 18 months ago but which I've only just come across.
The brainchild of Dylan Bowden, Bad Zeppelin are from Toronto and as far as I'm aware their only release is the Drugged Out And Dreamy ep. Dylan writes all the songs and whilst the band is currently pretty much just a recording project at the moment with members coming and going, Dylan's "gearing up to make some more moves in the coming year."
The ep was recorded by fellow Canadian Marvelous Mark (Dylan plays guitar for Marvelous Mark live), it's on M.A.R.K. Records and you can check it out here : https://badzeppelin.bandcamp.com/
Early next year we can expect to see a new ep called Bad Songs which is something I'm looking forward to hearing. In the meantime, here's the lead track from Drugged Out And Dreamy, it's called Bullet (In My Head)......
Well there's no use in going out, can't paint over a pretty face. I'm picking up the pieces, it's never enough. I can't shake this feeling. Will this be the last night I go spinning. I put another bullet in my head, the moment's long gone but I can't get enough. I can't shake this feeling. So don't say again because I'm falling into pieces. Put another bullet in my head I'm leaving.
Another song from the excellent No Front Teeth Records today, this one is from an ep by Southern Californian street punks Cause Of Death. Formerly known as Final Solution (who's 2007 single Warsaw Uprise also came out on No Front Teeth), they currently line up thus : Greg Willert (vocals), Tom Wold (guitar), Scott Tomashek (drums) and Jeremiah Hale (bass).
Their influences include the likes of Bad Brains, UK Subs, Minor Threat, Bauhaus, Leftover Crack, Adolescents, US Bombs etc (they recently shared a stage with the US Bombs frontman when they supported Duane Peters Gunfight).
The lead track from the single, this is a hard hitting scorcher of a song called Radiation Burns.....
I don't think it's unfair to say that the world is in a bit of a bloody mess at the moment. America, Britain, Russia and several other countries seem to think the best way of bringing peace to the middle east is by bombing the shit out of Syria. I've no idea what the best course of action is but to me, there must be a better way? Today's song, is about this subject.
The Movement are a band that straddle various genres; mod, power pop, punk, but I think all you need to know is that they keep putting out catchy as hell songs that should appeal to anyone who reads this blog.
Formed in 2002 and from Copenhagen, Denmark, they feature Lukas Sherfey (vocal/guitar), Sebastian Page (bass) and Philip Ingemann (drums). They wear suits, name Karl Marx, Rosa Luxenburg, The Jam, The Who and The Clash as influences and they play energetic, political music that aims to encourage young people to question what's going on around them.
2003 saw them release the Hardmod Internationalist ep and their debut album, Move! The follow up, Revolutionary Sympathies followed a couple of years later before they went their seperate ways for a few years. After returning with a revamped line up, they released 2011's Still Living The Dream ep and 2012's Fools Like You album. Most recently, Mad Butcher Records put out the Outrage! ep and it's that release that features today's song.
Sounding to my grizzled old ears a little like Louis Armstrong fronting The Mighty Mighty Bosstones! this is the rather awesome Smashing Up The World....
"it’s about how over the course of your life you connect with people briefly and then often you each move in different directions. i feel like sometimes there’s an inclination to distance yourself from the people who remind you of your past, either because you’ve changed and don’t want to be reminded of your old self or because you’re not comfortable with the ways that they’ve changed. either way i think it’s important to remember and treasure the really positive things we take away from our relationships with the people we’ve been close to, whether or not we’re close to them anymore and that’s kind of what the song is about."
Spoonboy (aka David Combs) was born in Takoma Park, Maryland, though is now based in Washington DC and was previously a member of The Max Levine Ensemble. He's released a couple of albums, on Plan-it-X Records as well as numerous demos, splits etc. You can check those releases out here : http://spoonboy.bandcamp.com/
D.I.Y. heartfelt folk punk songs dealing with personal politics and addressing topics such as feminism and gender have been his stock in trade but after over a decade he's brought the curtain down on the Spoonboy project.
The song I'm posting, which was released last year on the split 7" with Philadelphia's The Goodbye Party, is called Linus And Me. and features members of justsomepunksongs' favourites Martha. The video, filmed mainly in Durham (north east England), is a joy......
linus and me, we were talking about first loves, how they burn out, leave you charred and then changed completely. i thought about that one summer burning in the suburbs: me and caroline making eyes and waiting on the subway. she'd sought me out like the stamp that finished her collection, like a dying breed in danger of extinction, and we fell into each other without the slightest bit of caution, until the whole thing fell out from under our feet. i see caroline sometimes walking down the street, and her head’s all full up with those people she meets. i wanna call out and say "hey, thanks for everything, caroline" but she don't go by that name no more…
and if she saw me tonight, she wouldn't look at me twice, but you know, don't you know, it's alright… alright... alright. me and caroline walked different paths in life, but you know, don't you know, it's alright… alright… alright.
tommy and me, we had committed a crime, not a lot to it, just something we did at the time. there was war in the air and it troubled my mind. there were secrets between us, but i'd been sure the things we shared, well they were ours, but there was something there i hadn't seen before when i saw tommy in his military uniform: he'd just been looking for a war.
and if he saw me tonight he might not look me in the eye, but you know, don't you know, it's alright… alright… alright. me and tommy we had different wars to fight, but you know, don't you know, it's just gotta be alright.
it took a while thinking about someone new before i broke and took down that old picture you drew. you know they say moving on is just something you do. could be. i don’t know. i think sometimes it just happens to you. you find your path and you take that road. when you look back, i hope that know the things we share and the ways we grow, they’re due to all the people we've known.
and when you saw me tonight i know it didn't feel right, but you know, don't you know, it takes time, yeah it takes time. me and you, we held a little too tight. but you know, don't you know, it's just gotta be alright.
I've only just stumbled across today's song thanks to Red Dons' Daniel Husayn who's worked his magic upon it at his North London Bomb Factory mastering studio but my first thoughts upon listening to it were "hell, that needs sharing."
SPELLS are a 5 piece "vacation rock" band from Denver, Colorado who feature the talents of "Little" Stevie Shithead (vocals), Charlie "Continental" Stimsell (guitar/vocals), Duke "Box" Standard (bass), Peter "P" Bohner (drums) and Ella Sugar (vocals/shaker/tambourine).
The song I'm posting was released as a cassingle by Snappy Little Numbers Quality Audio Recordings at the end of 2014 and I think snappy little number describes it nicely. Driving cramped up all night in a van to play your typical punk circuit fleapits and sweaty basement clubs isn't on their agenda, they want to play shows in cities with beaches that they can fly to (L.A. or Mexico would be cool!). This is Jetset.....
Not sure what things are like in your part of the world but over here in Britain the media seems obsessed with scrounging benefit cheats. Today's song is about the biggest one of the lot.
Autonomads are a diy "dub/reggae/ska/punk/folk collective from Rusholme, Manchester. Featuring Robbie Wild (guitar/vocals), Porl (drums/vocals), Ehliot (bass), Perkie (keys/melodica/vocals) and Eeyun (guitar/vocals), they're veterans of around 500 gigs and play "crusty political sounds from the heart of the north."
They got together in 2007 and released their debut album, No Man's Land, in 2009. 2012 saw them release From Rusholme With Love, a split album with Black Star Dub Collective. Their latest release, 2014's One Day This Will All Be Gone... Everything Now! is widely considered to be their best so far. You can find it "name your price" here : https://autonomads.bandcamp.com/
It's an album that concerns itself with issues such as squatting, injustice, austerity, the media.....(basically life in general), they've channelled their anger and produced a great record. From it, this is Our Elizabeth.....
our elizabeth, bring out the guillotine she's our benefit cheating queen she's irrelevant, always has been that's our benefit cheating queen do you think they'll throw me a party on the scale of the jubilee when they find out i've been cheating benefits as long as her majesty scum! a drain! a parasite! that's the words they use for us but they don't commission boats for me i can barely afford the bus sitting in her castle people rotting on the streets the biggest council house this nation's ever seen protected by the state and paid for by the people get lizzy in the stocks and eradicate this evil our elizabeth, bring out the guillotine she's our benefit cheating queen she's irrelevant, always has been that's our benefit cheating queen our elizabeth, bring out the guillotine she's our benefit cheating queen well i heard they gave lizzy a little pay rise it's hard work cutting ribbons when she's got bags below her eyes they talk about spongers in the tabloid newspapers they should sack old lizzy and up their wages we've been conscripted in this system that we all despise fed up of the bullshit, the corruption and the lies every year a wedding, party, jubilee frankly i don't give a fuck about old lizzy our elizabeth, bring out the guillotine she's our benefit cheating queen she's irrelevant, always has been that's our benefit cheating queen.....
Originally from Darwen in Lancashire but currently based in Kingston Upon Thames, London, The Benefit Cheats claim to have been around some blocks but as a unit they've only been together for 3 or 4 years and last year's album, Itch, was their first recording together...... http://thebenefitcheats.bandcamp.com/album/itch
The line up features Punky Pete (vocals), Jimmy Lean Cheat (guitar), Pasty (bass) and OJ (drums). They play old school punk rock, attract comparisons with bands like Rancid and The Clash, and sing about social and political issues and the plight of the downtrodden underclass of society.
They're currently rehearsing new material but whilst we await a new record, this is from their debut album, it's called BNP Bingo.....
Dirty Gertie years ago You could have it any colour you like As long as it was black that's what Henry said And we all had a reason to get out of bed But there was Kelly's eye production line That wasn't enough to move with the times So the foreman said come and get your stuff Now we work when we can but there's never enough
And the buzz and the bustle that used to hang around All upped and went when the money left town
So it's eyes down for a council house At the BNP BNP bingo Minor thug dealers selling hate by the ounce At the BNP BNP bingo Discontent parasites ready to pounce At the BNP BNP bingo
Nothing for a middle line But the right side up suits them just fine You get your's and I'll get mine Let's go
I can count to one in Cameron's den Live in a nation run by white men Every time something goes just a little bit wrong Stupid starts singing the same old song They took our house and took our jobs They eat weird meat and don't believe in god Got a nuclear threat from outer space If they could do that why aren't they running the place
But the half light, half truth, half wit boys Give you heat not light and hopeless noise
So it's eyes down for a council house At the BNP BNP bingo Minor thug dealers selling hate by the ounce At the BNP BNP bingo Discontent parasites ready to pounce At the BNP BNP bingo
Nothing for a middle line But the right side up suits them just fine You get your's and I'll get mine Let's go
I'm sitting here in just shorts and a (Teenage Bottlerocket) T shirt typing this update. It's bloody hot in England today so I'm going to post something suitable for a glorious summer's day.
The 99ers are a "pop punk/rock and roll/garage/rockabilly/surf" outfit from Saint Paul, Minnesota who take their name from the ice cream with a Cadburys chocolate flake inserted. Influenced by many of the usual suspects (Beach Boys, Ramones, Buddy Holly, The Clash etc), they currently feature Stephen Brookfield (guitar/vocals), Christopher Schoonover (drums), Doug Heeschen (bass/vocals) and Emily Bee (guitar/vocals). Erik Kaiser-Crist is on extended hiatus due to family and work commitments.
The song I've selected is taken from their most recent album, Spark, which came out in 2014. Featuring what is possibly the same simian that The Lillingtons saw on the moon, this is I Wanna Surf Like The Apeman......
One thing I've noticed about compiling the songs in this blog is that more often than not a song by a band that not many people have heard of will get more views than one by someone well known, for example last week The RiceCrackers and Broken Talent both had around three times as many views as Billy Bragg. I'd like to think that this is a sign that people are reading this blog because they want to discover something new.
If that's the case then hopefully today's update, a track from a demo released last year by Portland, Oregon band Sloppy Kisses will be tempt the curious amongst you to listen to what is a very promising debut. (You can check it out here : https://sloppykisses.bandcamp.com/releases).
The band feature members who are in, or were in, a number of other bands (Dottie Attie, Wild Mohicans, Therapists, Final Massakre). They are Rose (vocals), Jeramy (guitar/vocals), Jason (bass) and Chris (drums).
I know very little else about them other than they're shortly supporting Piss Test and there's new recordings on their way. Until then, this is track 7 from the demo and it's called New Pompeii......
New Pompeii is the place to be New Pompeii, New Pompeii The trendy fucks flock to this city New Pompeii, New Pompeii Two looming giants sleeping nearby New Pompeii, New Pompeii Waiting to blow ash into the sky New Pompeii, New Pompeii
You have a false sense of protection Living in the shadow of ashy extinction Just wait until the eruptions begin And your ash-filled lungs are burning
So quickly we forget the past New Pompeii, New Pompeii 30 years ago a 27 megaton blast New Pompeii, New Pompeii The northern giant unleashed death New Pompeii, New Pompeii Destroying acres with its ashy breath New Pompeii, New Pompeii
New Pompeii is the place to be New Pompeii, New Pompeii To relive the events of 1980 New Pompeii, New Pompeii
But just remember Vesuvius New Pompeii, New Pompeii Next time that could be us New Pompeii, New Pompeii
