I wrote at the time "The album contains 11 catchy, anthemic singalongs. Gritty vocals stand out nice and clear over instruments that are played with gusto by a band that have clearly honed their skills supporting the likes of Cockney Rejects, SLF, The Exploited etc..." and going of the evidence of their new single, it's a skill that hasn't deserted them.
Blisterhead (https://www.facebook.com/Blisterhead) are the Swedish street punk veterans who previously featured on here in 2017 with the title track from their Border Control ep.
Without a doubt, one of my favourite discoveries of 2025 has been London street punks Roxie & The Razorblades (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61576340464669). I gushed effusively about their album Eat The Rich here :
Some albums boast maybe 2 or 3 great tracks and then a bunch of decent/pretty good ones. Eat The Rich was consistently great throughout so this was obviously a band to keep an eye on.
The latest news from them is that they're working on a new album but having the knack of composing top notch tunes (that are both powerful and catchy) with deceptive ease they've made that wait easier to endure by releasing a new 4 track ep titled Masters Of War. It's available as a name your price download here : https://roxietherazorblades.bandcamp.com/album/masters-of-war-ep
Check it out, they might just become your favourite new band too.
This song is called So This Is Capitalism...
[Verse]
Broken glass streets and a cold hard stare
Empty bellies but they don't even care
This is the land of the great divide
Where dreams rot and the truth's denied
[Verse 2]
Steel-toed boots on the backs of the weak
Every shadow’s a threat every future’s bleak
They sell us war while our homes decay
Oh so this is freedom they say
[Chorus]
So this is capitalism life on its knees
Scraps for the hungry while the fat ones feast
Boarded-up futures and a clawing dread
We’re the living ghosts of the violently misled
[Bridge]
Chains of the state rattle loud and clear
Eyes in the sky feed the boiling fear
Marching orders in a uniform line
No questions asked as they strip us blind
[Verse 3]
Concrete jungles and the sirens hum
Broken promises we’ve all gone numb
Statistics charts they bury our cries
Profit and loss while the planet dies
[Chorus]
So this is capitalism life on its knees
Scraps for the hungry while the fat ones feast
Boarded-up futures and a clawing dread
We’re the living ghosts of the violently misled
So, what went down well on last night's Just Some Punk Songs show? Quite a few of the songs actually and this was certainly one of them.
Roxie & the Razorblades (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61576340464669) are from London and feature Roxie C. (Vocals/Lead Guitar), Queen ElizaDeath (Vocals/Lead Guitar/Rhythm Guitar), Lil' P (Rhythm Guitar), Ivy (Bass) & Sloppy (Drums).
They play an infectious brand of old school street punk and they've just released a very impressive album titled Eat The Rich. They say it deals with "addiction, the gutter, rehab, the evil in the world that strangles all that is beautiful, but more importantly, about hope and overcoming. We sing about that and of course, our beloved Canning Town, Hammers football club."
In times like these when you can run foul of those in power for calling for the end to the indiscriminate killing of innocent women and children, this is a band that aren't afraid to call for the liberation of Palestine. They sum things up well in this song, it's called No More War No More Genocide...
Boots hit the pavement stomping hard through the night Gaslights flicker but they can't find what's right Fists in the air and teeth clenched tight Tomorrow ain't promised we fight this fight
No more war no more genocide Tired of the blood tired of the lies Broken bricks and shattered pride No more war no more genocide
Rust on the rails and smoke in the rain We’re swapping our chains for smashes of change Streets torn open red like a vein The screams of the lost still standing in pain
No more war no more genocide Tired of the blood tired of the lies Broken bricks and shattered pride No more war no more genocide
The banners are ragged the boots are worn But the fire in us can't be ignored Oi shouts echo in a back-alley morn Politics for people it’s time to be reborn
No more war no more genocide We've had enough no compromise Locked and loaded the truth won’t hide No more war no more genocide
It's titled Bloody Minded and it sees the band combine gruff vocals and pop sensibilities to great effect. You can find it as a name your price download on Bandcamp https://thebuzzers.bandcamp.com/album/bloody-minded-ep
This song came out as a single in January and it's a great way to start the ep. It's called Pick A Fight...
Is it possible to be both happy and sad at the same time? I'm guessing it is as that's how I feel now. Happy as I noticed a new ep by Dublin band Grit (https://www.facebook.com/GRITDUBLINOIPUNK). Sad because it's a final posthumous release.
The band first featured on Just Some Punk Songs in 2016 when I admitted to knowing nothing about them other than that they were a female fronted punk band from Dublin who'd recently released a demo ep titled Ghost Estates. https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2016/08/grit-pauline.html
So on last night's Just Some Punk Songs show the roof was blown off the chatroom by a song called Whites Of Your Eyes. It's one of the highlights on Losing Streak, the 10th studio album by County Durham street punks Gimp Fist (https://www.facebook.com/gimpfist).
I've long thought they're easily one of the best bands out there that make this kind of music and their latest release just reinforces that opinion. 15 tracks of catchy as fuck working class anthems (you'd expect nothing less from these guys). No Bandcamp link but you can check it out on Spotify or Youtube
It's an album with it's fair share of politically themed songs where the band stand up to the charlatans in power ("Who's gonna help to get this country right on track?"), ("Hey politicians, you devils in disguise, we won't stop until we see the whites in your eyes"), ("This is our scene and we're taking it back. The sound of the streets for white and for black").
They've continued to impress since then with a string of hard hitting releases so their new single (and the announcement that they're playing both this year's Manchester Punk Festival & the Rebellion Festival) is a great excuse to get them on again.
It's a fat free working class anthem that dovetailed nicely when I played it on this week's Just Some Punk Songs show with a track from the new album by fellow Londoners The Chisel. It's called Council Estate Of Mind...
They return to Just Some Punk Songs with a track from their excellent new album, Rise Of The Underdog.
It's a dozen tracks of the 70's/80's classic oi style that the band are known for and confirms their standing as one of the best of the modern day bands who play these kind of working class anthems. It's not yet on Bandcamp though you can listen on Youtube : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mcnB58Nbp2evm1l9-lTUkCNr7ScW85WKs (Is it just me who's hearing influences from Go For It era Stiff Little Fingers on some of the tracks?)
American fans might be interested to hear of their 1st ever US gig in October at the Bossanova Ballroom, Portland, Oregon.
There's many more highlights though. I played Punk Police on this week's show and for the blog I'm going with a song about a young life taken, another wasted life. This is The Knives...
Now that "80 seconds of shouty joy" gets a new lease of life in a rerecorded version as part of the band's debut album. Titled 反骨 (which translates to English as Born Rude), the album is available on cd and digital download. You'll be able to pick up a copy of the cd if you catch the band on their tour of Europe & England this summer (a tour which sees them play the Rebellion Festival) and you can also get it here : https://rumkicks.bandcamp.com/album/born-rude
It's a fun album that documents what they've been up to over the past 5 years. A mix of new tracks and new versions of fan favourites, its a breath of fresh air from one of the punk scene's most colourful acts. Press play, turn up the volume and have yourself a good pogo around your living room.
This is the opener, it's a song that pretty much says "fuck it...let's party!" It's called Drinking Everyday...
pour a drink and let me sink ( don’t know what to do) The innocent childhood has passed. ( won’t let them come again) Drinking fucked up everyday
Grab a beer and let me pay (You must’ve had a hard day) Not a joke, it’s no one’s fault (Wish my life is joke) Drinking fucked up everyday
Forget all the messes (Alcohol save my life) Its gonna be a whole new world No need to feel guilty (Drink as much as you want) Hangover tomorrow but let’s have fun tonight
They want you to work till you die While they take a big slice of pie...
Headstone Horrors (https://www.facebook.com/HeadstoneHorrors) are a street punk quintet based in Nottingham and Northamptonshire. They released a debut album in 2016 titled Tales From The Murder House. It was 13 tracks of horror themed tunes with titles such as The Thing From The Basement, Alone We Are The Dead, Murder In The Dark etc. Catchy and fun, it was devilishly delicious.
In 2019 we got album number 2, titled This Town Called Purgatory, it was similarly dark, similarly themed (Titles include Then The Fog Came, Beneath The Lake, Death Rides Behind...).
And now for album number 3. It's a Self Titled affair, the music is still catchy as hell, Natalie Thornton's vocals still impress, the band are as tight as ever but this time the songs are a mix of sci fi and political. It all blends together well though. Think radiation filled skies, think of a doomed planet, think about your salad days drinking your parent's beer, think about growing older and getting angrier. Add lots of Matt Freeman inspired basslines and you've got a great album.
Hailing from Bangor in Northern Ireland, Dirt Byrds (https://www.facebook.com/dirtrockhq) are the punk trio that feature Keith Farr (vocals/guitar), John McLachlan (bass) and Ben Simpson (drums). They're no strangers to this blog and they return today with a track from their very fine new album Standing In Line.
It's been a long while coming with the band's intention of having it ready by 2019 getting scuppered by Covid but better late than never and I suppose we can't complain as they have released other music in the meantime. The album's available on cd and digital download (with the cd having 4 extra bonus tracks) and there'll be a vinyl version out in May.
Top notch street punk/oi for you today from Plymouth trio Riot City Radio (https://www.facebook.com/riotcityradio/). They've featured on here a couple of times previously, boast members of bands such as Hostile Minds, Arch Rivals, Hard Wax etc and are one of those special breed of acts that never seem to put out a bad song.
Their songs are usually about the kind of topics you'd expect from this sort of band, if you check out the titles on their debut album Time Will Tell, you'll know exactly what you're in for; 'Punk Rock Family', 'Never Forgive, Never Forget', 'Overcome', 'Practice What You Preach', 'Reap What You Sow' etc. There's even a track titled 'Working Class Anthem' in which they proclaim "This is our anthem, sing it now." Pretty regulation subjects to cover but performed with great gusto in exactly the manner you want from this genre. Catchy as hell, singalong earworms that'll disappoint no one.
This is a track they've released a video for, it's a timely song of which the band say "Sadly due to the state of both national and international politics it seems more relevant today then when we wrote it over a year ago..." It's called On The Streets...
Brigada Flores Magon (https://www.facebook.com/Brigadafm) are a band from Paris who formed at the end of the 1990's and swiftly established themselves in Europe as the flagship group of the anti-fascist street punk movement. They mix political activism with punk rage and their first album in 15 years (released 2 years after they reformed) demonstrates that the fire still burns as brightly (“The very rage which fuelled us twenty years ago still burns more than ever. This very anger leads us to come back now to shout our rebellion and our solidarity among those who are not heard. It has been two decades, yet society keeps on sinking in the abyss of injustice dug by those in power. We refuse to see our freedom and our rights disappear hopelessly day by day.”).
The line up of the band is Mateo ( vocals ), Julien ( drums ), Goose ( ex-The Decline, guitar ), Arno Rudeboy ( ex-Bolchoi, guitar ) and Laurent ( ex-Ya Basta, bass ). The new album is titled Immortals and in an inspiring internationalist effort, they’ve got Machete Records (France) / Discos Machete (Mexico) / Rebel Time Records (Canada) / RASH GDL (Mexico) / PM Press (USA) / Dure Realite (Quebec) / RASH USA (USA) / SHARP Rio De Janeiro (Brazil) / Three Way Fight (USA) / Unite And Win (Brazil), all joining forces / combining resources to ensure that the album – its music and its message – gets spread far and wide. If you want gritty/anthemic punk rock with a message then check it out... https://brigadafloresmagon.bandcamp.com/album/immortels
This track is accompanied by a video featuringvarious antifascist demonstrations in Paris, it's a great example of how catchy this band are. It's called Hold The Line...
Comes the time, hold the line
Seize time hold the Line
ENGLISH LYRICS
Facing the cops, on the front line
In front of your judges, your head held high
Under the truncheons, clenched teeth
Rage in your stomach until nausea
Take your chance, swing it hard
On the right, a breach, a man falling
In the smoke, blood on the ground
Don't flinch, roast 'em
Never lower your head
Never unclench your fists
Never think about the end
Your determination is their defeat
Comes the time, hold the line
In the heat, the skin that burns
In your mouth, a taste of metal
Itchy eyes, one step after another
Cries, singings, the wave prevails
In a few meters, the end of their world
The singings resound again
of humanity, the one who survives
Her cries ring out, brothers, she roars
Never lower your head
Never unclench your fists
Never think about the end
Your determination is their defeat
Comes the time, hold the line
"The production job on this is great, they've made a great step forward, it's their best release yet. I've just ordered the cd."
That was just one of the very positive comments in the chatroom when I played today's song on a recent Just Some Punk Songs show. Unsurprising really as it is a damn good album.
It was a very impressive song and it kicks off a very impressive album. It's also quite a lengthy album, boasting a value for money 16 tracks clocking in at almost an hours runtime. It's powerful street punk with plenty of singalong choruses about topics such as making your own rules, groundhog days at work, mental health issues, World War 1 & non league football. You can get it on vinyl and cd from Demons Run Amok Entertainment : https://bit.ly/3JiEfWE
This track is another with a war theme, it's sadly all too topical, it's called Warchild
Gotta keep running through the war torn city,
Gotta survive he's on his own, Past the bombed school and burnt out car, Down to the ruin that he once called home,
Born with bombs flying overhead, And drones that film from the cordite sky, The western world is just a fantasy, He saw it once on an old tv, War-child in the war torn city, Gotta survive the living hell, He joined the masses and the exodus, Looking for utopia that doesn't exist.
Chorus: Warchild on the run Keep on running keep on running Warchild got no home Keep running keep running Keep running Through the bombed out streets tonight
Apocalyptic playground for the orphaned child, Hungry and alone he's left to roam wild His father got killed like his best friends dad, His mother couldn't cope and slowly went mad
Warchild on the run Keep on running keep on running Warchild got no home Keep running keep running Keep on running keep on running Keep running keep running Keep running Through the bombed out streets tonight
Back in 2018 The Sentence (https://www.facebook.com/northwestpunkband) first featured on this blog. They're a quintet with members from Burnley & Blackburn who's line up is Spike (Bass), Ged (Drums), Steve (Guitar), Watty (Vocals) and Andy (Guitar). They've appeared a couple of times since and are back today with the lead track from their new ep.
The ep's titled Dead On The Outside and it features 5 classic sounding punk rock anthems during it's 18 minute runtime. The songs are impressive and they benefit from a decent production job which gives it a big sound but doesn't smooth out any of the rough edges. Lyrics touch upon the political and the personal with one of the highlights being their love letter to the punk rock scene (there's a video for this song here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-B7t5_GRV9I).
Another highlight, this song has a great, nagging guitar line and is about how it's time to fight back against those who'll accept no blame for fucking up our once great nation. It's called Rise Up...
I don't think I've posted much street punk recently but one band I always look forward to hearing new music by are Darlington based Boilermaker (https://www.facebook.com/boilermakeruk). They seem to be a band that pop up on various bills around the country and who return every 2 to 3 years with a quality new album but in my opinion they should be higher profile. They formed in 2016 and featured on here pretty much straight away (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2016/11/boilermaker-8182.html). I mentioned at the time that they featured members of bands such as Last Rough Cause & Gimp Fist and that their line up is Max Turnbull (vocals), Phil Coates (guitar), Mike Robson (drums) and Steve Addison (bass).
The debut album, Shop Floor, was followed by Kill Or Create and now they've just released another bunch of working class anthems in the form of Job And Knock (the term job and knock means being paid a day’s wage for doing a specific job, regardless of the time taken – an incentive to the hourly-paid to get a job done quickly: finish the job and knock off). You can get the album on cd from the band via Facebook for £12.
They've released a teaser track from it, it's called Boys In Blue...
They return today with an equally enjoyable selection from a new long player titled Black Gold. They started up as a side project of The Oppressed and feature a line up of Paul Cobley (guitar/vocals), Nidge Downs (guitar), Wayne Bending (bass) & Antal Kizmus (drums). To help promote the album, they'll be supporting Booze & Glory at The Moon in Cardiff on November 17th.
Black Gold is a worthy follow up to Generals And Soldiers with 13 "working class hymns" that will get attendees at that Booze & Glory gig singing along. Politically astute songs of solidarity, fighting side by side and lost love, it even features a top notch cover of the Tom Robinson Band's Up Against The Wall. You can get it on cd and digital download here : https://thefatalblow.bandcamp.com/album/black-gold
Knowing that regular Just Some Punk Songs show listener Atti Emecz was going to snap up the cd I asked him to choose a favourite song for me to play on Sunday and I'll also post his choice here. This is One Voice...
