It's that "this one went down well on last night's show" time of the week...
Tin Ribs (https://www.facebook.com/tinribsband) are from Newcastle, they formed in 2022 and feature a line up of Jason Jones (vocals), Rob Milligan (guitar), Dan Ord (bass) and Luke Rodwell (drums). Their first proper release was last year's Council Pop ep which you can find here : https://tinribs.bandcamp.com/album/council-pop
Now they return with a new song which is about bailing out on a night out to go and get plastered in the gaps between the walls of your house instead. A true pandemic lockdown occurrence for vocalist Jason, it's an impressively rocking slice of punk tuneage. You can find it as a name your price download on the Serial Bowl Bandcamp page https://serialbowlrecords.bandcamp.com/track/back-to-the-crawl-space
Since then they've been honing their sound without dissipating any of their raw energy and they've just unleashed a beast of an album titled NiiS World. (I guess I better mention for those new to the band their name is pronounced Nice).
The album's available on ltd edition coloured vinyl (and numbers are running very low as I type this so be quick if you want one) and digital download https://niisla.bandcamp.com/album/niis-world
We're very lucky at the moment to be blessed with a number of awesome bands playing raging yet ever so catchy punk music (such as Slaughterhouse, Scowl, Mannequin Pussy etc) and maybe I'm biased but I usually seem to favour strong female vocals when choosing songs for the blog or show.
They released a few songs from the album as singles and they were great. The song I'm featuring is one you may not have heard yet if you're only familiar with those singles but it highlights both the power and the melody of the band to great effect. It's called New Pig...
It was a song by Melbourne band Blowers (https://www.facebook.com/blowersband) which I said will get you into your happy place. It had an accompanying video of the band joyfully twanging & banging away at their instruments in an enclosed space. It was simple but very effective.
Well they've just done it again with the video for one of the songs on their upcoming album Blowmania. The album will be released by Chaputa Records (EU) & Trash Cult Records (AU) on April 28th (vinyl & digital) and it's sure to be a garage punk delight. https://chaputarecords.bandcamp.com/album/blowmania
A quick shout out today for a very cool ep that I missed at the end of last year.
Taker are an "oi/punk/rock’n’roll band from Buffalo, NY featuring members of Violent Way, Corvo, Healer, They Live, Big Dog, Big School, Candy and more!" They're tagged as skinhead rock n roll and oi but I'm pretty sure they've a few Ramones albums in their collections.
Last December saw the release of a 4 song self titled ep. The cassette version is sold out but you can snap up the digital as a name your price download : https://taker-oi.bandcamp.com/album/taker-ep
I'm late to the party but I'm hoping there'll be more music from them soon.
That release was a self titled album from 2023 and it definitely rewarded repeat listening as the songs seeped into your consciousness with me pretty much playing them on a loop on Youtube.
So I've got high hopes for the upcoming album, Holes. It'll be out on April 9th and there'll be a variant of it on a cool looking transparent bright orange & sunset yellow cassette - via Cat's Claw Records.
This latest single features a guest appearance by one of the UK's greatest vocalists Frankie Stubbs (the Leatherface frontman is currently a member of new Sunderland band Roach Squad and sung on this song on their debut album https://roachsquad.bandcamp.com/track/i-wonder). Also featuring is Closey Amy from UK pop skate punk band Zypmouth (https://zypmouth.bandcamp.com/music) on vocals & bass.
Fugitive Bubble are a hardcore punk band from Olympia, Washington who first came onto my radar when they released their debut album, Delusion, almost exactly 2 years ago : https://stuccolabel.bandcamp.com/album/delusion-2
It'll see the band lining up with a new drummer, Typhoid Mary from Physique, alongside Harley Moore (vocals/bass) & Kurt Stevens (vocals/guitar). We're promised a dozen tracks of high-energy art punk.
This is the one that particularly caught my attention, it's called Steel Dust Mites...
They're a band you never quite know what you're going to get and I'm sure their upcoming album viagr aboys will be a delight when it comes out on their own Shrimptech Enterprises label April 25th. https://shop.vboysstockholm.com/
This is the 3rd single from the album (I preferred 1st single Man Made Of Meat to the follow up Uno II but both hinted at a diverse and very fine release) and it got inside my head immediately. I had to share it despite it no doubt being shared by everyone else and his dog.
Fun, catchy and just that little bit different from everything else that's around at the moment, this is The Bog Body...
You can’t believe it
They found a body buried under the ice
It is in pristine shape
Her hair and nails do look really nice
How come you are upset, do you think she’s a threat to you?
I can’t help if I’m impressed it has nothing to do with you
You are consumed by jealousy,
You are completely obsessed with
The bog body
You say you hate the swamp woman
What the hell are you on about
Do you even know the difference
Between a swamp and an ancient bog
In a bog you are pickled, in a swamp you would decompose
You’re just jealous of her darkened skin and her dainty nose
You are consumed by jealousy
You are obsessed with the bog, the bog body
You are consumed by jealousy
You are obsessed with the bog, the bog body
Look at her skin
Look at her nose
Feel her hair
Touch her clothes
Look at her skin
She’s so old
She’s so old
she's so old
Look at her skin
Look at her nose
Feel her hair
Touch her clothes
She’s so old
She’s so old
She’s so beautiful
Ooh
You are consumed by jealousy
You are obsessed with the bog, the bog body
You are consumed by jealousy
You are obsessed with the bog, the bog body
"I don't know anything about Korean band Spikey Brats" is what I was going to start this first paragraph with but then I did a Facebook search to check if they were on there and it turned out I'd posted a song by them (this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9tWnHlLvcY) in the Facebook group The strange, obscure, diy and outsider music back in 2015.
They're a pogo punk band, a happier Casualties... big hair and fast tunes. Think of bands such as Drinking Boys and Girls Choir and Rumkicks and you won't be a million miles away.
I'm not sure where you can buy this song from but I do know that it brightened up my Monday morning so I'm posting it here. Enjoy.
It'll also be available on vinyl next month via a bunch of different labels - Belgium : Loner Cult Records - France : DON'T TRUST THE HYPE recordz - Germany : Spastic Fantastic Records - Hungary : Drinkin' Beer In Bandana Records - Lithuania : PASIDARYK PATS records - Spain : La Agonía de Vivir - United Kingdom : TNSrecords - USA : No Time Records Tape version on : - France : Dispear Records and DEAF PUNX records - USA : NO TIME records
This is Bedtime For Diplomacy...
This time it's sure.
The limits are crossed.
each of your actions,
Just makes me sick.
each of your words,
Just reminds me...
how stupid you are.
Now stop talking.
Bedtime for diplomacy.
Bedtime for diplomacy.
Can't take it anymore.
Bedtime for diplomacy.
This has been goin'for too long.
for too long
for too long
One fuckin'more time.
Once too often.
You're drooling acid.
And you don't think.
We tried too many times,
to explain to you.
You don't wanna hear.
And we warned you.
Bedtime for diplomacy.
Bedtime for diplomacy.
Can't take it anymore.
Bedtime for diplomacy.
This has been goin'for too long.
for too long
for too long
This is the end of the fuckin’line.
A skinhead rock n roll band from Liverpool today who seem to have been around for maybe 6 years? (they released a demo in 2019 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOA8f-55QiY) but who I've only just come across today..
They're called Bovver Bailey (https://www.facebook.com/BovverBailey) and they're a quartet (Sid - Vocals, Paul - Guitar, Ged - Bass & Piggy - Drums). They've just released a new ep, I'm guessing it's their debut proper release (though I may be wrong). It's one of the best new working class oi releases I've heard for a while, it's definitely got 70's punk/Quo/glam stomp influences and you can find it here : https://bovverbailey.bandcamp.com/album/round-the-back-of-the-azad
This is the title track, it's called Round The Back Of The Azad...
Straight there n' back again
N' mind how yer go
'cos the scallies in the alley
They reckon, they know
That the goth in the offy
That got mugged for his bifters
Pointed the finger
N' somebodys brother got lifted
Now there is half a dozen cousins
Tearin' round cursin' yer name
But they're all just mouth
N' they all just talk a good game
Seen yer on the corner of Stanley Road
Waitin' for a kick off - Ready to go
But yer ahl girls always callin' the cops
Flashing blue lights across the video shop
And if you don't like it & yer feel like fightin'
Lad you can go bring yer dad - Alright?!
N' anybody else who fancies themselves
I'll see yer round the back of the Azad
Straight there n' back again
in one piece if yer lucky
Gettin' rolled for yer dole
Outside of the bookies
Clobber good n' proper
Not one word to the coppers
Or I'll see you get stabbed, behind the Happy Shopper!
Now there is half a dozen cousins
Tearin' round cursin' yer name
But they're all just mouth
N' they all just talk a good game
Seen yer on the corner of Stanley Road
Waitin' for a kick off - Ready to go
But yer ahl girls always callin' the cops
Flashing blue lights across the video shop
And if you don't like it & yer feel like fightin'
Lad you can go bring yer dad - Alright?!
N' anybody else who fancies themselves
I'll see yer round the back of the Azad!
It's been 14 months of doing a weekly check on the Helta Skelta Records Bandcamp page hoping for a new release and today it's paid off. And as the cherry on top of the cake it's a new release featuring the distinctive vocal talents of Ashley Ack!
And that's her position, front and centre, with a new band from Perth called AMEROL. She's joined this time around by guitarist K-Hole (he also featured with her in Cold Meat), Morgin (bass) & Jay Hell (drums).
They've a Demo cassette due out in a few weeks boasting "six tracks of flat out high energy fucken hardcore." If a few weeks seems a long way off, a couple of the songs are on Bandcamp : https://heltaskeltarecords.bandcamp.com/album/demo-cs-5
This is one of them, it's called Security Breach...
Short and sweet today, a song by a band I've just come across. The Gilligans bring us "Rock n Roll from the guts of the Golden State!" They're from Porterville, California and they're reminding me of the simple but very effective budget punk sounds of The Spits and The Ramones.
A glance at their Bandcamp page suggests they've been around for a decade but there's very little in the way of releases on there. (There was an album titled 1 released a while back which suggests their releases aren't as few as it may at first appear).
There is however their split ep with the rather more prolific Fresno one man band Judy & The Donuts (check him out here https://judyandthedonuts.bandcamp.com/).
It's a very fine compilation of melodic punk tunes with a mix of both male and female vocals. Fans of the likes of Accidente and Rotura will lap it up.
This track was originally released in 2014 on an ep titled No Nos Mata La Muerte. It's called Vértigo...
I'd pretty much forgotten about them, assuming they were one of the many bands to shine brightly for a brief moment in the annals of Just Some Punk Songs history and then to be never heard of again.
But happily I was wrong as they've just released a new 8 song cassette titled Mind The Bollards. It's limited to only 20 copies so if you want one I wouldn't hang around. If you just want the digital version, it's in the same place : https://famouslogsinhistory.bandcamp.com/album/mind-the-bollards-fw52
This is the opening track and a catchy little beast it is too. It's called Relax...
So today's song is one of those that you gravitate towards it because of the title before realising it's really rather good. It's by a "foamcore" (yeah, fucked if I know what that means too) band from Norwich called Rudimentary Paste (https://www.facebook.com/RudimentaryPaste).
They're a trio featuring Sim (vocals/guitar), Bob (bass/vocals) & Nigel (drums/vocals) and they debuted this time last year with an ep titled Octopus Milk & Other Tall Tales.
Reminding me a little of Mclusky, this is the title track. It's called That's Why She Lost Her Job as a Blue Peter Presenter...
She says, drink paint And I say, no you probably shouldn't drink paint Shouldn't drink paint Shouldn't drink Shouildn't drink paint Shouldn't drink paint Drink paint!
She says, eat soap And I say, no you probably shouldn't eat soap Shouldn't eat soap Shouldn't eat Shouldn't eat soap Shouldn't eat soap Eat soap!
Sometimes, she says, you just have to Eat the apple
Picking the bones of progress of sorts and I am concussed by milky affectation
She says, brush until your gums bleed And I say, don't brush that hard Dentists say do not brush that hard
She says, don't eat my filthy bread She says, don't eat my filthy bread She says, don't eat my filthy bread And you definitely shouldn't eat that bread 'cos that bread will definitely kill you
Sometimes, she says, you just have to Stitch yourself into the walls
Picking the bones of progress of sorts and I am concussed by milky affectation She's carrying something Now she is walking What is she carrying? Where is she?
I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine
This latest release is both catchy and has a straight forward message. To help convey that message they enlisted the help of women from the alternative scene from all over the world to participate in the project. Those participants being Solweig MONOI, Elisa Los Fastidios, Marie et Véro Carmen Colère, Stef, Stephe, Louise, Mélodie, Jane Dance On Your Grave, Marion, Cath, Dztorb et Ingreen Las Fokin Biches, Coco Ekymose, Céline Psycho Squatt, Rosa The Not Amused, Génessis Falso, Nao, Micky Shock, Anne Stachel, and Nell.
Is it possible to be both happy and sad at the same time? I'm guessing it is as that's how I feel now. Happy as I noticed a new ep by Dublin band Grit (https://www.facebook.com/GRITDUBLINOIPUNK). Sad because it's a final posthumous release.
The band first featured on Just Some Punk Songs in 2016 when I admitted to knowing nothing about them other than that they were a female fronted punk band from Dublin who'd recently released a demo ep titled Ghost Estates. https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2016/08/grit-pauline.html
They've a new album on the way via Spaghetty Town Records (USA) and Wanda Records (Europe). It'll be titled On The Loose and it's out on April 5th. They recently released a first single from it called Dogs and you can find that here : https://ravagers.bandcamp.com/track/dogs
They'll also be touring Europe to promote the album
The 2nd single from the album is a double A sided affair. It features both "a snotty, high-octane anti-love anthem that cuts through the noise with a jagged, Motorhead-style riff and walking bass lines" and a flip side that "taps into a darker, more sinister energy with a riff that could have come straight off the Damned's first album."
This one's an anthemic stomper called Razor Love...
Since then they've slimmed down to a trio; Allan Stacey (Guitar/Vocals), Ethan Stahl (Bass/Backing Vocals) & Abe Pedroza (Drums). If I've got this right The Doze and Joe Steele leaving after that debut release and former Chubby And The Gang bassist Ethan Stahl joining up in time for last year's Don't Wait ep.
A couple of tracks from the Don't Wait sessions, recorded at C Block by Jack Knife, have just surfaced on the Twin Turbo single. The band say they're "clearing the cache" in preparation for them to get back in the studio to record a debut album. The single's available as a name your price download : https://streetsweeperruleok.bandcamp.com/album/twin-turbo
Amusement are a melodic punk band from Portland, Oregon who's members have previously played in bands such as From Ashes Rise, North Lincoln, Bothers, Deathreat, Young Livers & Arctic Flowers. Influenced by the likes of Hüsker Dü, Leatherface, Seaweed, Superchunk, Dinosaur Jr, Samiam, Pegboy etc, they've been together for 4 years and have released 3 eps.
I played Standing on Top of the A Bomb on a recent show so today I'll highlight the bonus track that wasn't on the eps. It's a version of a song originally released by Dinosaur Jr on their 1988 album Bug. It's called Budge...
Grab a ride See the wings, most fly Try to picture me with you Let's stop We can crush at high speed Hope we can feel enough for two Yeah I gave you a nudge Not sure what to touch Hey, made my last nudge Why won't you just budge Grab a ride See the wings, most fly Try to picture me with you We can gaze Then trade to space plane Tons of rubble to sift through Yeah I need a bug Not sure what to touch Hey, made my last nudge Why won't you just budge Grab a ride See the wings, most fly Try to picture me with you We can gaze Then trade to space plane Tons of rubble to sift through Let's stop We can crush at high speed Hope we can feel enough for two
They're big advocates of animal rights but aren't as keen on fascists and capitalists. Many of their songs deal with these topics and you can always rely on them to combine heavy, pounding riffs with intelligent lyrics.
Their new album is no exception to this rule. The album's titled Carnyx which led me to check out what Carnyx means. Google reveals "The Celtic Carnyx, an ancient wind instrument used between 300 B.C. and 200 A.D., produced eerie, resonant sounds that echoed across battlefields. Historian Polybius noted its ability to rally Celtic warriors and instill terror in Roman soldiers who heard its haunting tones before combat." Hopefully this album has a similar effect on those huntsmen, fascists, capitalists and general wrong 'uns that the band are rallying against.
I should really be highlighting Hidden Face as the band have gone to the trouble of releasing a very classy video for it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBg91oKvOLY) but being somewhat of a contrarian, I'm going with something different. This is about how corporate power can bring about Teflon coats. You can get away with pretty much anything if you grease enough palms. It's called Nothing Sticks...
They return today with a new single on Brace Yourself Records and happily despite 2 years away they're still as infectious as ever. The single deals with body image and the need to get in shape to satisfy others ("my body is yours enjoy the view").
They'll be touring the UK during May and the gigs are already selling out so get them tickets fast.
I squat for 2 hours a day Not enough to keep the red ring of shame away If my stomach is flat and my arse is perky Maybe I could get everybody to like me Fingers for dinner, starving yourself Trinny and Susannah stacked on the shelf Vertical stripes and skipping meals Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels
I look good this is all I do My body is yours enjoy the view I look good this is all I do My body is yours enjoy the view
I squat for 5 hours a day Fat or pregnant? Thin or dying? What would the tabloids say? And I throw up everything I eat Coz nothing tastes as good as skinny feels
I look good this is all I do My body is yours enjoy the view I look good this is all I do My body is yours enjoy the view
I squat for 12 hours a day I know best I do what people on the telly say And all I count are pounds and calories Don’t read books just glossy magazines Who needs brains when you got hip bones like mine I learnt this from you mum, I must be doing fine Nothing really matters except numbers on the scales Coz nothing ever tastes as good as skinny feels
I look good this is all I do My body is yours enjoy the view I look good this is all I do My body is yours enjoy the view
I wanna be the smallest girl that’s ever lived I wanna go down in history for being thin I wanna be the smallest girl that’s ever lived I wanna go down in history for being thin
I look good this is all I do My body is yours enjoy the view I look good this is all I do My body is yours It’s all for you
I've said it before ("If you were to ask me who my favourite vocalists were at the moment I'd have to think long and hard and write you out a comprehensive list, but one name that would definitely be on there is Abi Ooze."https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2023/02/abi-ooze-alien.html) and I'll say it again, I'm a massive fan of Abi Ooze.
Aka as Jade Baisa, when you see there's new music by her you just know it's going to hit that sweet spot. Jangly garage/power pop, it's a joy. So when I crawled out of bed this morning and stumbled on a new song I knew I had to shout about it.
It's featured on a 40 track compilation album from the see/saw newsletter titled BATTLE FOR L.A.: a see/saw benefit. There's some great bands on there (Gee Tee, Neo Neos, Billiam...) and all the songs are previously unreleased. All proceeds go directly to individuals and families impacted by the Eaton and Palisades Fires in Los Angeles earlier this year.
Mid Wales punk quartet The Red Bastards (https://www.facebook.com/Theredbastards) return today with a new single. It's a teaser for the band's next (as yet untitled) album which is pencilled in for release late summer.
