The Medicine Dolls - Danger! Danger! Disco!

  

  Usually on Just Some Punk Songs I prefer to post new (or nearly new) releases in the hope I'll introduce you to something you may not have heard yet. Today's song though has been around for a couple of years but I'm sure it'll be new to many of you. As for those lucky enough to be familiar with it (and with the album it's taken from) I'm sure you won't mind covering old ground.

  The Medicine Dolls (https://www.facebook.com/themedicinedolls) are a post-punk, garage rock trio from Cape Town, South Africa. The line up of the band is Greg Allan (vocals/guitar), Bex Nicholas (Arabella) (bass) & I'm not sure who the new drummer is as Kai Von Fritschen has recently left to move to Amsterdam. They formed in 2016 and in 2020 released a debut album titled Filth And Wisdom. The reason I'm featuring a song from that album today is because it's finally getting a vinyl release from Johannesburg label Mongrel Records. Another reason is that I was asleep when the album originally came out and I didn't give it the exposure it deserves.

      So what does the album sound like? In a word, great! Comparisons are aplenty on the Bandcamp page; Velvet Underground, Cramps, The Doors, The 5.6.7.8’s & The Birthday Party all getting a mention. It's a sleazy concoction of the coolest genres. Punk, garage, surf, glam and rockabilly all feature in what's a very inventive and highly enjoyable treat. RED - RELIGION EQUALS DECAY - God Save The King

  

    R.E.D - Religion Equals Decay (https://www.facebook.com/redfromsurrey) are from London. They've been described as the lovechild of Crass, Motorhead and Abba. A few weeks ago they sent me a couple of tracks (STOMP & 5 Minutes) which impressed the hell out of me and also impressed the folk in the chatroom when I played them on the show. 

  Now those songs have been unleashed for public consumption along with another half dozen choice cuts on a rather wonderful album titled Music For The Masses - Volume 1. An 8 track album I can hear you thinking... Yeah, that's right but unlike most punk long players, all the songs are over 3 minutes long and they're all happily good enough to retain your interest throughout. 

  Aforementioned opener brings to mind Dirt Box Disco if they'd been ripping steroids. It's a punk singalong beefed up to the max. Track 2, 5 Minutes (no relation to the Stranglers classic) is equally powerful and to my ears has a slight rockabilly influence (although that maybe just me). It's a pounding success that also entices you to singalong. 

  Rather than reel descriptions off the remaining songs and bore you all shitless, I'll just say they don't disappoint compared with the couple I'd previously heard. It's post-punk at it's best.   This is the closing track (and one I'll be playing on this week's show). It reminds me of Killing Joke, it's a topical look at world affairs and a damn fine way to highlight a damn fine album. God Save The King... 

Austerity - Am I Trending Yet

   

  A song today that went down very well with the listeners in the chatroom on this week's show. They seemed especially keen on the lyrics. 

  Austerity (https://www.facebook.com/austeritypunk) are a three piece post-punk / dance-punk band from Brighton. They want to make nerds dance and we want to make punks join unions. They list amongst their influences the likes of XTC, Scritti Politti and Wire and are often compared to Gang of Four, A Certain Ratio and Fugazi. I played a couple of tracks from their excellent 2019 album Anarcho Punk Dance Party on the show but this is their first time on here. 

  A couple of months ago they released a song about social media commentary and how the likes of Katie Hopkins can make cash from spewing out mock outrage which is lapped up as fact by the easily led ("What do you pay to see them get outraged every day? What will we pay, dividing our nation every day?"). It's not without humour but is also biting and sadly all to true. It features Rhi Kavok from Gulls on backing vocals. Enola Gay - Salt

  

  Just over a year ago I featured the debut single by Belfast post-punk/shoegaze/noise quartet Enola Gay (https://www.facebook.com/enolagaybelfast/). It was a very impressive calling card, a pummelling soundtrack accompanied by well thought out and topical lyrics about racism (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2020/07/enola-gay-birth-of-nation.html). 

  This year they've continued to impress with a clutch of intelligent, razor sharp tracks, the latest of which I'm posting today. As well as releasing music (and getting plenty of airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music etc), they've been (and will be) busy playing live so check out their Facebook page for gigs.

Rudi Betamax - Killing People After Skool

  

  Who's Rudi Betamax? I ain't got a clue to be honest other than than what it says on Bandcamp (Art Punk writer and performer. Collaborator and protagonist with Real Shocks and The Videos) and that he's from Stockton On Tees. 

  He's also responsible for releasing not one, but 2 of the month's best releases. 

  First up there's Rudi Betamax & Real Shocks. 8 tracks of quirky budget electro punk with titles like Affection and CurlyWurly (I Need You). And if that ain't enough, there's also a 5 track ep titled Rudi Betamax and the Videos. It's fun stuff that reminds me somewhat of bands like Geza X and the Mommymen. It's playful and inventive and leaves me wanting more.

Speed Week - Phishing

  

  Hey Hey it's Speed Week that are on Just Some Punk Songs today... 

  Hailing from Melbourne (yep, yet another killer Aussie band), Speed Week (https://www.facebook.com/speedweekband/) are a band that jumped onto my radar a year ago when I heard a pretty damn awesome song by them called Into The Pit (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2019/09/speed-week-into-pit.html). 

  They returned last week with a new ep. It's titled Hey Hey It's Speed Week and it landed just too late for me to feature a track in the recent Australian punk special show that I put together (https://www.mixcloud.com/mick-fletcher/just-some-punk-songs-aussie-punk-special/). 

  So what's it like? 

  It's fair dinkum cobber. If I was making a comparison I'd say it treads similar ground to another JSPS favourite, Vintage Crop. It's mid paced, catchy garage punk mixed with post-punk featuring a vocalist that half sings, half chats his way through proceedings. The Cool Greenhouse - Alexa! (Guest Review By Billy Ouka)

  

  "Alexa play something decent"

  "It's better to be both loved and hated in equal measure than merely tolerated" is a comment I made in the Just Some Punk Songs chatroom as the listeners were giving their opinions on the new single by The Cool Greenhouse (https://www.facebook.com/thecoolgreenhouse/). A few people loved it, a few didn't. One pissed off for a smoke disappointed that once again I wasn't playing anything by Hawkwind!. But I'm a fan (otherwise I wouldn't have played it) and Billy Ouka rushed off to buy it so I asked him to write a few words of recommendation... 

  The Cool Greenhouse new single is great piece of simple DIY pop magic, coming after their highly acclaimed debut album, this new single is their best release yet, a simple beat and tune, two notes at most, with a deadpan monologue vocal delivery commenting upon the use of AI Alexa's role in our lives (not mine I might add).

  A solo project that has developed into a  five piece, they craft humorous repetitive pop-leaning gems that are as bizarre as they are brilliant. With live performances that have been received really well. There's so many influences in there but the two that stand out are Jonathan Richmond and the Modern Lovers and Attila the Stockbroker, not a bad mix. With articles in Maximum Rock n Roll and DIYMag, this is a band to watch out for, as our future becomes more dystopian The Cool Greenhouse will be a perfect soundtrack.

Cool Jerks - Tory Paradise

  We're not quite in the north east again today but we're not far off as Cool Jerks (https://www.facebook.com/cooljerkspunk/) are from Leeds. They're a band that mix up all the best bits of punk, hardcore, post punk and even surf (as in the type of surf hammered out by Natterers and Dick Dale rather than Jan And Dean) to serve up one hell of an aural treat. They've just released a debut album titled England and as with last year's similarly themed Private Sector lp that saw Hygiene storm their way in to my 2019 best of list, it's really rather stunning.

  It's a record that "explores the state of the national psyche and what is left of this country after years of austerity and the rise of the far right" and whilst the band admit the album won't provide any answers, it does depict a grim portrait of the state of the nation today. The songs are urgent and driving, the vitriol drips. We're painted pictures of Churchillian warriors fighting to protect their country on the beaches of Zante and Magaluf. Patriots with the flag of St George hanging above their decking. Comparisons are drawn with the haves ("I'm loving the new Merc, it goes like a bomb. I nearly hit a kid earlier,,,) and the have nots ("pay your rent, your bills and your bus fare to work..."). Anger and sarcasm combine in the wonderful minimum wage "zero hours, zero power, part time, part life..."

SmileBand - Smile

  Another fresh faced new UK band for you today, this time they're from Kent and tag themselves post-punk. They're called SmileBand (https://www.facebook.com/SmileBandUK/) and feature a line up of Joe Francis (vocals), Rob Mckie (bass), Erik Miles (guitar) and Jacob Robinson (drums).

  They recently released a S/T debut ep on Body Drop Records. It opens with a 30 second intro before letting loose with the title track, a rampaging juggernaut sizzling with energy in which they urge us to cheer the hell up. They haven't politely knocked and introduced themselves, they've kicked the door of it's hinges and stormed in. You can find the video for it below.

  Next up is Rich Boy, It's starts with a slow burn intro (reminding me slightly of Nirvana's Come As You Are) before livening itself up and morphing into a shouty put down of someone living on mummy and daddy's wealth. Things are rounded off with the ep's longest track. Titled King, it builds slowly,  metronomic drum beat and wailing guitars lay down a wall of sound before bursting into life and proving SmileBand are yet another very promising young band keeping the punk scene very much alive.

Vintage Crop - Gridlock

  Vintage Crop (https://www.facebook.com/vintagecropband/) are the Geelong "band of musicians" who greatly impressed early last year when they released one of 2019's best eps.   Hopes were always going to be high for new material and those expectations have skyrocketed even further after the release of new single Gridlock. It's blazing a trail for upcoming album Serve To Serve Again which will be out on August 7th as a split release between Anti Fade Records and Upset The Rhythm.   Not departing much from their signature sound, the new song suggests that Serve To Serve Again will hopefully continue where Company Man left off. When I played it on last week's Just Some Punk Songs show someone commented that there were a few Australian bands releasing this kind of stuff but for my money, Vintage Crop are up there with the best. It's an autobiographical tale written after getting caught up in traffic on the way to a gig and it's called Gridlock...

Gym Tonic - By The Time I Was Young

  Did you see the Just Some Punk Songs' Top 100 Songs Of 2019 list?   (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2019/12/top-50-songs-of-2019.html). I hope you did as it was bloody good (though I would say that as I compiled it!). Anyway, the point of bringing it up (aside from tempting you to check out some of the great bands that featured) is to demonstrate how impressed I was with one of the bands I came across last year. Berlin based synthpunk 4 piece Gym Tonic (https://www.facebook.com/GYM-Tonic-597778927050736/) released their debut album, Good Job, and it was a delight. 10 killer songs with possibly the highlight, Tourists Of Death, sitting proudly in 4th position in the Top 100. Obviously new music by the band was always going to be very welcome and that's what I'm featuring today.

  Holed up in isolation, Olivier (keys/vocals), Karen (bass/vocals), Andrea (drums) and Stephanie (guitar/vocals) haven't been letting enforced separation keep them quiet. They've been working on a few demos and they contributed one of them to an impressive 36 track sampler from No Way Back   (https://nowayback.bandcamp.com/releases). All income from the sampler goes towards Mission Lifeline (https://mission-lifeline.de/).

  The Gym Tonic song is quite a restrained affair by their standards but it creeps and crawls it's way into your consciousness and it reminds us why we loved Good Job so much. I'm left thinking "Fuck off virus and let bands like Gym Tonic back into the studio and get back to releasing great music."

Gumming - Slipstream

  Gumming are a post punk band from Richmond, Virginia who featured on here a couple of years ago when I highlighted a "noisy, pissed off, but not without a tune" song of theirs that I had included in a Just Some Punk Songs show female vocalists special   https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/04/gumming-anger-ranting.html

  That track was from their previous and very good album Human Values. Last month they returned with new full length Overripe and it's another winner. The band are a 4 piece; Emelie Von Unwerth (vocals), Landon Walker (guitar), Marisa Cagnoli (bass) and Lee Halpin (drums), the songs are compact flurries of spiky noise bursting with spit and snarl. MEMES - J.O.B.S.

  You know what, I often wish I could stay in bed in the morning. Get up when I feel like it (preferably nursing a slight hangover), take the dog for a walk (or maybe to the beach!) and then spend the rest of the day online discovering new music for you wonderful people. Unfortunately I can only do that at weekends as I have to go to work Monday to Friday. Maybe, like Memes, I should have thrown my job application form in the bin...

  Memes (https://www.facebook.com/memestheband/) are a Scottish duo that play a frantic style of post punk. Their excellent debut single Blah Blah Blah (https://sixtonnesdechairrecords.bandcamp.com/album/blah-blah-blah) featured in the Just Some Punk Songs end of year chart and seemed to impress everyone who heard it.   There's a number of really good UK bands breaking through at the moment that are obviously inspired by punk but who are splintering off in different directions (I suppose Idles, Slaves and Sleaford Mods are obvious examples as well as Fontaines D.C., Lovely Eggs and Football FC). Memes have everything to be up there with them. 2 singles, 2 winners. A very promising start indeed.

Bacchae - Leave Town

  Bacchae (https://www.facebook.com/bacchaeband/) are a post punk 4 piece from Washington D.C. who formed in 2016 and who feature a line up of Katie McD (Vox + Keys), Rena Hagins (Bass + Vox), Eileen O'Grady (Drums) and Andrew Breiner (Guitar). Their releases include a 2016 Demo, the following year's Down The Drain album, 2018's Self Titled ep and a very impressive single from last year called Everything Ugly. March will see them release their sophomore album, it'll be called Pleasure Vision and it'll feature both Everything Ugly and the track you'll find below. Mr. Wrong - Nuclear Generation

  Happy New Year everyone and welcome to 2020, let's hope there's as much great music released as there was in 2019 (and let's hope the mainstream start picking up on some of it!).

  It's only right to begin the 20's with a song from a 12" that will be released in a week or so so. It's by a 3 piece post-punk band from Portland, Oregon who's line up is Moffett (Guitar/vox), Ursula (Drums/vox) and Leona (Bass/vox). They're called Mr. Wrong (https://www.facebook.com/mrwrongband/) and I could have sworn I featured them on here a couple of years ago when they released their Babes In Boyland album but I can't find that update anywhere so I must have just played a track from it on the show. Not to worry they feature today.

Midnite Snaxxx - Disconnected

   I've got to be honest, I was a little surprised when I heard Slovenly Recordings were releasing the new album by Oakland California's Midnite Snaxxx. I thought the band's catchy garage stylings may have been a little on the poppy side for a label that's associated with all that's wholesomely trashy about the genre. You know what though, whoever decided to unite band and label is a blooming genius.

  The new album is titled Music Inside and it's my favourite Midnite Snaxxx release yet. Back in 2017 I was comparing them with The Ramones, Dictators and Cheap Trick (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2017/02/midnite-snaxxx-rule-world.html) and whilst those comparisons could still be considered valid, this time around there's a whole lot more variety to the album. Boasting 12 tracks, none of which gets too close to the 3 minute mark, it's a lean, energetic and inventive treat. It transcends their roots and is in my opinion more influenced by spiky post-punk than any of the illustrious bands the various members have previously graced. Dry Cleaning - Goodnight

  "She said have you ever spat cum onto the carpet of a Travel Lodge?"

  As an opening to a blog update it's a pretty eye catching first paragraph (designed to draw you in) and it's just a small part of  the lyrics which are spoke/sung by Dry Cleaning vocalist Flo Shaw on the lead track on their fab debut ep Sweet Princess. The band are from London and also includes Lewis Maynard, Tom Dowse and Nick Buxton. They've been together since 2017 and are picking up plenty of praise from mainstream outlets such as Radio 6 and the NME but that's no reason why little old Just Some Punk Songs shouldn't recommend you check them out too. Rather than a traditional punk rock aural assault you can expect witty and often acerbic treatises on subjects such as Flo's admiration for Meghan Markle, Youtube comments and "the good old days." Sapphire Blues - Good Morning Britain

  Another exciting young band today, they're called Sapphire Blues and they hail from Bristol. They tag themselves as a "Pre-Brexit" trio and line up with Sam Lance Jones (vocals/guitar), Harry Beaver (bass) and Chris Thompson (drums). Later this month they'll be releasing their debut ep, Sundays Of Life, and to help promote it they've numerous gigs lined up. Check them out here :   https://www.facebook.com/sapphirebluesuk/

  They've recently released a video for a new song that they say is "an unapologetic, topical, politically charged punk anthem which speaks from the heart, and which in less that three direct and menacing punk rocking minutes manages to epitomize a whole era of instability, dubiety and the wariness that's all over Britain's political climate at the moment."

  As well as the wet weather, we also have to get up in the mornings to depressing news of the latest corrupt and incompetent shenanigans occurring in The Commons as pasty faced gammon Piers Morgan and his ilk stir up the easily led. It's enough to make you want to leave the country.

MATA HARI - Factory

  "Martial, furious, MATA HARI is expected to make a splash in 2020."  Quite some praise from Rolling Stone magazine for the band that I'm featuring today but do you know what? They may just be right...

  MATA HARI formed in 2016 in Montpellier and see regular line up Paul Gauloise (bass/keyboard/ singer), Paul Maumy (drums) & Teo Blanc (guitar/singer) joined on their debut ep by Jonathan (singer/guitar) and Jack Pernet (drums). The ep's titled Building Site and it's 5 impressive cuts of tasty post-punk. I notice the press release is throwing around names like Joy Division, The Stooges and Idles and when you're being placed in such esteemed company you better be good. Fortunately they are. Just don't expect them to sound anything like those bands as these young Frenchmen have carved out a sound of their own.   This is the lead track, an industrial opening leads into an angular attack of sharp guitars (or would that sound better as a sharp attack of angular guitars?) and lyrics about spending hours round town, walking down empty streets, waiting for tomorrow, there's no way out, no rescue. An allegory? I think you'll be very impressed. It's called Factory...

  There's a number of bands that when I play them on the show I can confidently predict the chatroom folk will fill the room with love. Girls In Synthesis are one of them...
