The Scaners - Le Futur

"Sci-Fi gonzo synth garage punk band" The Scaners (https://www.facebook.com/thescaners) are from Lyon, France and previously featured on here in 2017 with a song titled UFO Crash :  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2017/11/the-scaners-ufo-crash.html

It was taken from a 7" single and was a fun blast of futuristic punk fun. Since then, the band have gone from strength to strength and have just released a new album titled III. You won't be surprised to learn it's their 3rd lp. The first 2 can be found here : https://thescaners.bandcamp.com/

The new album is a joint release by Beluga Records, Folc, Dangerhouse, Wanda Records & Adrenalin Fix Music and you can find it on black or blue vinyl https://www.belugarecords.com/products/the-scaners-alien-boy-1 or digital download https://belugarecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-scaners-iii

They've not radically changed their sound over the years, it's still extremely catchy Spits influenced sci-fi synth. If it's not broke, don't fix it. Just keep turning out those killer tunes.

Here's a prime example, it's called Le Futur...

Gym Tonic - Play Dead

Here's a release I've been waiting eagerly for. Berlin quartet Gym Tonic released a wonderful album in 2019 titled Good Job which they pitched as being hyped up synth punk in the vein of DEVO, Half Japanese & The Residents. I featured this song from it :  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2019/04/gym-tonic-carsick.html

Since then, all I've heard from them was a track that featured on the No Way Back compilation :  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2020/06/gym-tonic-by-time-i-was-young.html

There was however some outstanding live footage of the band playing live at Fritz's Ranch (HOW AWESOME IS THIS!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBvMWyq73mY).

Today that eager wait comes to an end. They've just released a new 6 track ep titled Sanitary Situations. Featuring a line up of Olivier Bernet (Synth & Voc), Karen Thompson (Bass & Voc), Stéphanie Morin (Guitar & Voc) & Alice Huet (Drums) it's everything I was hoping for. It's catchy, inventive synth punk that'll keep those live crowds dancing. You can get it on vinyl or digital download here : https://gymtonic.bandcamp.com/album/sanitary-situations

I could have chosen any of the songs to highlight but I'm going with Play Dead...

Sex Mex - We'll Be Gone

 "Snitches, bitches, druggies and abusers

That's ok, cause one day, they'll be gone..."

Today's song is one that's been rattling around in my head for a couple of week's now. Maybe you've already heard it, if not you should take a listen.

It's by Sex Mex (https://sexmexsux.com/) who are from San Antonio, Texas, and who seem to have been pretty prolific of late. I don't know much about them so rather that write some stuff to pad out this post I'll instead post a clip of them performing live in what appears to be a local bar/shed combo! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT0zAiuPNBo

Their latest release is an ep titled We're A Happy Family which is 4 tracks of quirky synth punk and it's available as a name your price download here : https://sexmexsux.bandcamp.com/album/were-a-happy-family

This is the closing track and it's wonderful. I'd recommend you listen to the Bandcamp link as it's got a better sound quality than the Youtube clip you'll find below. It's called We'll Be Gone...

Telegenic Pleasure - I Wanna Know

Cover versions. Some people love them, some hate them, most judge them on their respective merits. There's been some great ones down the years with most of these coming when a band puts their own unique spin on them and makes them their own (amongst my particular favourites would be Stranglers - Walk On By, Clash - Police And Thieves, Husker Du - 8 Miles High and for a more modern day example of an artist making someone else's song their own check out Glenn Tilbrook reinventing Sleaford Mods  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2020/07/glenn-tilbrook-bhs-sleaford-mods-cover.html).

Today's song features a reimagining of a song originally recorded by Canadian punk band The Demics. It was released in 1979 on their Talk's Cheap ep and if you want to compare and contrast, the original version is here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCNaUnqKJns

I wasn't sure who Telegenic Pleasure were until I started listening to their new album, Concentric Grave, upon which I immediately recognised the vocals of Marco Palumbo-Rodrigues. He's head honcho of No Front Teeth Records (who are releasing the album along with New York label Feral Kid Records) and has featured in more bands than I've had hot dinners. Playing all the instruments on the album is Canadian Rob Brake (who's also been in numerous bands such as Isolation Party, Dong Vegan, MONONEGATIVES, and Klazo). It's actually only just as I research a little about the band that I realise I played a song by them (Sealed Off) on the Just Some Punk Songs show back in 2019.

The album is pitched as being 12 cuts of garage synth punk... FFO Radioactivity, Screamers, Devo etc featuring members of Mononegatives, Illegal Leather, Isolation Party and The Gaggers. It's a very good listen so check it out https://feral-kid-records.bandcamp.com/album/concentric-grave

If you always thought The Demics should have used more synths, you might like this. It's called I Wanna Know...

Famous Logs in History - Cactus Pricks

A new band to me, Famous Logs In History (https://www.facebook.com/famouslogsinhistory) are from New York and look to have been around since 2018. They've recently released a 6 track ep titled Fancy! on which they line up thus; Log Off (guitar), Anna Log (keyboard) Log-O-Rhythm (bass) & Back Log (drums) (Am I alone in thinking it's a shame there's no member called Captain's Log?). There's also a guest appearance on saxophone by Anna Hochhalter of OOF! (https://oofband.bandcamp.com/).

The ep's available on cassette from Fuzzy Warbles and as a digital download :  https://famouslogsinhistory.bandcamp.com/album/fancy-fw29

Musically I'd describe them as DIY budget synth infused post punk. It's a fun listen. Check it out if you're looking for something a little different.

This song reminds me a little of the Desperate Bicycles classic Advice On Arrest (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGxYFfpS7i8), it's called Cactus Pricks...

Cherry Cheeks - Alone

Cherry Cheeks is a project started in 2020, in Orlando, by Kyle Harms (he's since relocated to Portland). Born out of boredom & frustration, we've been blessed with a slew of very decent eps in a short spell of time (check 'em out here : https://cherrycheeks.bandcamp.com/). Playful and inventive budget priced synth punk that might have once been tagged as Devocore but is more likely to be filed under egg punk nowadays.

The most recent release, a Self Titled album, came out last month on Total Punk. On it, Kyle is joined by Kyle Elferdink on lead guitar. I was impressed with the 3 songs that are streaming on Bandcamp and with the one posted to Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4onc1g5x_Ac&t=23s) but it wasn't till the weekend just gone that I had the pleasure of sitting down and enjoying the full record. Unsurprisingly, it's excellent. Brimming over with invention, full of catchy tunes and all in all a top listen. You can grab it here : (vinyl, cd or digital https://totalpunkrecords.bandcamp.com/album/s-t-lp-2).

It's hard to choose a track to highlight as they're all of a similar high standard but I'm going with something that isn't on Bandcamp yet. This song displays some hardcore influences and some cool guitar playing to compliment the synth. It's called Alone...

Thee Hearses - Goo Man

  Who are Thee Hearses?

  I've absolutely no idea.

Can I hazard a guess at some guy in his bedroom with a synth who loves old sci-fi B movies and Spits style trashy garage punk?

Whoever they (or he) are, they've lit up the summer by releasing a couple of very fine eps. A couple of weeks ago we were treated to a name your price Self Titled offering of budget priced whacked out fun. 5 tracks of retro futuristic noise with titles like Insects In My Brain and It Came From Planet X (and a cool cover of one of the best songs from the aforementioned Spits).

A fortnight later and along comes EP 2. More of the same out of this world dance punk that'll appeal to those of us that like a bit of egg/devocore/weirdopunk.

You can find both eps here : https://theehearses.bandcamp.com/album/ep-ii

Back when I was a kid, there was a movie called The Incredible Melting Man about an astronaut whose body begins to melt after he is exposed to radiation during a space flight to Saturn. This song made me think of that (I've no idea if it was an inspiration). It's called Goo Man...

Feeling weird feeling kinda strange Everyday I'm in constant pain Nice glow on my green skin Throw my jelly bones into the bin I was a loser now I'm not Got a body that's made out of snot Living life as a puddle fiend None of the girlies want to talk to me I am the Goo Man Sucking down some chili dogs Down the sidewalk my body slogs Feeling just like a rubber band Drinking gas straight from the can The sun burns through my body mold Shiny glitter pieces made of gold Got a body that's made out of rot But at least I'm not an afterthought

Lassie - Zegway Cop

Lassie (yes, they're named after the dawg!) are a Leipzig based quintet featuring Mari, Shreddy, Kat, Teun & Frizzl. They've been around for about 3 years releasing music that mixes and mashes up elements of punk, garage, synth, power pop, post-punk and no doubt several other styles into something of their own. It's whacked out fun and you can check out their releases here : https://lasssie.bandcamp.com/

There's also a new album titled The Golden Age Of... which is coming out on a very limited cassette (50 copies) on Valencia label Discos Peroquébien. It collects together those early releases into one convenient (and very enjoyable) package. If you're looking for something just that little bit different then you should definitely check it out : https://discosperoquebien.bandcamp.com/album/the-golden-age-of

This track is about a king of the street cop on a glorious day with his pedal to the metal. You won't hear him coming. It's called Zegway Cop...

Top Left Club - I C U Tonight

When looking for info about new Brighton band Top Left Club I noticed that their line up included Johnny Hartless, Mac Daddy, Jimi Dymond and Tim Cox. A couple of those names stood out as being familiar and a bit of checking revealed that Mac Daddy and Jimi Dymond have featured on here previously as members of both Rotten Foxes and Young Francis Hi Fi. The other 2 guys it turns out are from Skinny Milk.

Anyway, they've just released a debut album titled Shoulders At 90 and it's damn good. It's 11 "raw, pure songs filled with visceral energy will saturate every corner of your mind, potentially changing the course of your life" from a band that take no prisoners.

So can we expect the hardcore speed punk that was Rotten Foxes or Skinny Milk's psychedelic fuzz? The answer is no, not really. Elements of both bands aren't completely dispensed with but this time around we're treated to energetic garage punk which is augmented by the addition of some dirty synth. It's available on vinyl from Beast Records (https://www.beast-records.com/) and you can get it here :   https://topleftclub.bandcamp.com/releases

This is one of the songs that stood out on first listen, it's called I C U Tonight...

Night Motor - White Nights

Based in Cornwall, Night Motor (https://www.facebook.com/nightmotor) are "a post-punk bunch of garage rock fiends" whose sound encompasses synths, dirty drums and confrontational guitars in order to produce a wall of noise distilled from goth and industrial themes." They line up with Mawgan Lewis (guitars/backing vocals), Mat McIvor (vocals), Pete Knight (bass), Kelly Green (synths/theremin/backing vocals) & Jonny Hipgrave (drums).

They've been around for almost a decade and are gearing up to release their debut album (their first new music in 5 years if Bandcamp is anything to go by). It's titled Fatal and it'll be out on cd and digital download on June 7th.

The album starts in impressive style with Blessed And Cursed (a song which I'll play on this week's Just Some Punk Songs show (https://www.facebook.com/events/228796615349390), an up tempo toe tapper on which Mat and Kelly's duelling vocals are backed by a pretty impressive post punk back beat. It's just the first of 13 tracks which cherry pick influences from the last 60 years of most of our favourite musical genres. You can pre order it here : https://nightmotor.bandcamp.com/album/fatal

This is the teaser track that they've released a video for, called White Nights...

Headlice - Nit Comb

   Leave My Nits Alone...

I don't think I've made any secret of the fact that I think much of the best punk music in recent times has been coming out of Australia so I'm always trying to keep an eye on up and coming new bands from Down Under and one release I'm particularly looking forward to is a debut 7" ep titled Vol. 1 from Brisbane synth punks Headlice. I noticed them popping up on gig posters for cool bands such as The Chats, Dennis Cometti and The Unknowns and decided to check them out.

I've not unearthed much info on them yet but did find this snippet... "their snotty brand of synth punk can be blamed on the Spits, Jay Reatard, and Ausmuteants. Although a relatively new band, Headlice have begun making a name for themselves locally through high-energy live shows and allegedly mugging fans outside gigs."

Boasting titles such as Auto-Erotic Asphyxiation, I Hope You Get Injured & Bomb In My Backpack and going off the evidence of the track that features below, there's really no way the ep can be anything less than wonderful. As well as 7" vinyl, it'll be available on cassette and as a digital download. You can check it out here : https://headlice1.bandcamp.com/album/vol-1

This is joyously fast and frantic (and a little bonkers) and it's called Nit Comb...

Shrinkwrap Killers - I Think The Sirens Are Coming For Me

The Shrinkwrap Killers (aka Greg Wilkinson from Brainoil and Earhammer Studios) have already featured twice on here this year with the splendidly titled (and very catchy) Stolen Electrics To Shove Up Your Ass and It's Not A Dead Body Inside This Bag. Today sees the posting of another song as there's now a new album and unsurprisingly it also has a splendid title (and is full of very catchy tracks!). It's called Feral Rats Have Become Our Only Pets and it's available on vinyl from Iron Lung Records ("150 copies on translucent green with black splatter and 350 on black 150gr vinyl housed in a 24pt jacket with lyric sheet (essential!) and download card included.")  http://ironlungrecords.bigcartel.com/product/shrinkwrap-killers-feral-rats-have-become-our-only-pets-lp

On a recent Just Some Punk Songs show I played the title track and someone commented "They're basically putting out the same song every time but what a brilliant song it is!" and there was a grain of truth to that statement as the "band" have a signature synth punk sound (I think I previously described it as budget bubblegum and compared them to The Spits).

There's plenty to enjoy on the album, highlights include This Building Sucks For A Zombie Apocalypse, Hive Robotics At The Human Zoo and Caught Pissing On The Vatican (I'll be playing it on The Just Some Punk Songs show later today  https://www.facebook.com/events/1321719428176850) but basically if you like one track you'll like 'em all.

There's a video to accompany this song so it's the one I'll be posting today. It's called I Think The Sirens Are Coming For Me...

the Obscenities - Police Aren't Friends

   "Just another shitty punk band..."

the Obscenities (https://www.facebook.com/theobscenitiesrule/) are a trashy garage punk band from Detroit featuring Dee (guitar/bass/lead vocals) and Greg (guitar/bass/drums/synth/vocals). They love their sweet grandma so much they named their Halloween ep Songs For Grandma. It's pretty apparent though that she's "dead."

Song 1 is a cheerful ditty titled Youthful Euthanasia. It's budget synth punk. It's fun.

Song 2 is called Police Aren't Friends and it's a warning to be wary of the boys in blue. Grandma features in this one.

Song 3 is about Kasper Hauser, it's about the 19th century German boy who claimed to have spent his entire life in a small, dark room, sleeping on straw and fed by unseen strangers. It's pretty well acknowledged that he was somewhat of a liar

You can get the ep on cassette and digital download : https://obscenities.bandcamp.com/album/songs-for-grandma-ep

  This is Police Aren't Friends...

Kerosene Kream - Muzzle Me

Kerosene Kream (https://www.facebook.com/kerosenekream/) are a 5 piece Swedish band from Stockholm featuring members of Polyester, Caligulas Mamma and Sticky Baby : Edvin (vocals/guitar), Hilda (vocals), Adam (drums), Fredrik (bass) and Theo (synth). They released a split album last year with Caligulas Mamma (https://kalkatrazcassettes.bandcamp.com/album/self-titled-x2). It spawned this rather cool video for the song Dog SS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8Zy6Ik26cc

Earlier this month they resurfaced with a new ep titled Look Mum which features 4 tracks, one of them a recorded version of a track from the split (Where Is My Dog) plus 3 new ones. It's quirky synth infused fun and you can get it on vinyl from Push My Buttons :  https://www.pushmybuttons.se/products/kerosene-kream-look-mom-7 or as a digital download here :  https://kerosenekream.bandcamp.com/releases

I think this is probably my favourite track, it continues with the canine theme and it's called Muzzle Me...

Alien Nosejob - Sound Of Sirens

I'm guessing most people have been like myself and spent 2020 doing pretty much the square root of fuck all. It's not been easy carrying on as normal during various pandemic lockdowns and restrictions but it doesn't seem to have stopped Jake Robertson from distilling his creative juices and issuing them in the form of a couple of albums. His name doesn't ring a bell? He's been in numerous bands (Ausmuteants, Drug Sweat, Hierophants, Leather Towel, No Limit, School Damage, Swab, The Frowning Clouds, The Snoozefests...) but most recently he's been busy with solo project Alien Nosejob.

From Clunes, Australia, there's already been January's Suddenly Everything Is Twice As Loud album (a track from it featured here : https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2020/01/alien-nosejob-black-sheep.html) and now less than a year later he's followed it up with Once Again The Present Becomes The Past. Originally planned as a concept record about Australia’s first and largest air raid, the 1942 Bombing Of Darwin, it's gradually morphed into a body of work that suggests how "history is forever repeating itself. It continues to happen. It will happen again."

An example of history repeating itself is how Alien Nosejob have released another killer punk album. Aside from a few quiet moments (a couple of brief piano pieces and the haunting synth tracks The Day After and Dead Pelican), we're treated to some pretty pacey, whacked out garage punk. The synths in these are much faster and aggressive whilst I think it's fair to describe the vocals as manic.

It's available on Anti Fade Records in Australia and Iron Lung Records (USA). For vinyl or digital download check here : https://aliennosejob.bandcamp.com/album/once-again-the-present-becomes-the-past or here : https://ironlungpv.bandcamp.com/album/once-again-the-present-becomes-the-past-lp-lungs-155

The song I'm highlighting below almost leaves you with the feeling of being amidst the rubble of a city undergoing an air raid attack. It's pretty full on and pummelling. It's called Sound Of Sirens...

Powerplant - A Spine

Powerplant (https://www.facebook.com/ppowerplant/) are a post punk band from London (via Ukraine) who released a very decent album last year called People In The Sun. Though it slipped through the cracks and didn't get featured on here it did make enough of a lasting impression to feature on the Just Some Punk Songs end of year chart. Their new ep won't be slipping through any cracks.

The line up of the band is Theo Zhykharyev (guitars/vocals/bass/synth/digital percussion), Lloyd Clipston (drums), Benjamin Murphy (bass) and Cajm (synth/samples). They've received comparisons with the likes of Devo, Tubeway Army, Screamers & Lost Sounds but on the new ep are "weirder and faster." There's even an outbreak of crooning on the song you'll find below.

The ep's titled A Spine/Evidence and it's available on clear vinyl 7" (ltd to 500 copies) from the ever reliable Static Shock Records  https://staticshockrecords.limitedrun.com/products/664602-powerplant-a-spine-evidence-7-ep-preorder

Cassettes are available from Dreamland Syndicate

  Digitally it's here : https://ppowerplant.bandcamp.com/album/a-spine-evidence

A Spine is a funky little number that features the aforementioned "crooning". Track 2, Good Time is a lively synth punk banger and it'll feature on the Just Some Punk Songs show later today (https://www.facebook.com/events/549484852640336/). Next up is Evidence, another hyped up slice of electro groove. Prelude, as the name suggests is pretty much a piano intro into what's probably the most manic track on the ep. If Hurtwood doesn't get you moving then you're probably a lost cause. All in all a very nice release that deserves your attention.

  This is A Spine...

Cuir - Trop Vieux Pour Mourir Jeune

Back in February, waves were created amongst certain sections of the punk community upon the release of a very impressive demo by Cuir. The solo project of Doug Zilla (Sordid Ship/Radical Failure/Coupe Gorge), based in Lorient (France) and boasting a mean synth this was just the kind of sit up and take notice music this blog loves. It was name your price on Bandcamp and so is the first single. It's titled Single Single, it features 3 more synth heavy cuts of primitive punk and it's every bit as impressive as the demo. From what I can make out, it's going to be available next month on cassette from Forty Tapes (https://www.facebook.com/fortytapes/) but it's already available for download : https://cuir1.bandcamp.com/album/single-single-2

The name of the band translates into English as Leather. The song I'm posting today appears to translate as Too Old To Die Young. This is Trop Vieux Pour Mourir Jeune...

Trop vieux pour mourir jeune
Trop vieux pour mourir jeune ouais
Trop vieux pour mourir jeune
Je suis trop vieux pour mourir jeune

Jeune
Pour mourir jeune ouais
Jeune

Gym Tonic - Carsick

Gym Tonic are based in Berlin with members from Canada and France and feature Olivier (keys/vocals), Karen (bass/vocals), Andrea (drums) and Stephanie (guitar/vocals). They describe themselves as playing hyped up synth punk in the vein of DEVO, Half Japanese & The Residents. Last month they released a debut album titled Good Job, it's available via Et mon cul c'est du tofu? and Transistor 66 and you can stream it here :   https://gymtonic.bandcamp.com/album/good-job

You can get more info here : https://www.facebook.com/GYM-Tonic-597778927050736/

Good Job is their first release since their 2017 split 7" with PUFF and it features rerecorded versions of their 2 songs from that split along with 8 other very cool synthpunk bangers. Most of the songs feature predominantly female vocals, the exception being the excellent Tourists Of Death (I'll play it on next Sunday's Just Some Punk Songs show). There's a video for B12 Injection which is well worth checking out (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IjcBd-vEvA) but the song I'm featuring today is called Carsick....

Becky & The Politicians - If Boys Got Pregnant

Today's song came out a while ago (May 2017) but it's been getting plenty of plays in the Just Some Punk Songs household recently and deserves it's place on this blog.

Becky & The Politicians are a lo-fi synth punk band who I know very little about but who released an ep called Options in 2016 ( https://bestsupportingactress.bandcamp.com/album/options) and followed it up a year later with a mini album of covers titled Punk Rolls Over The Hill. On this release they put their own unique spin on classics originally recorded by The Ramones, Zeros, Swell Maps, Wire, Snatch, Buzzcocks and The Orchids. You can check it out here :   https://bestsupportingactress.bandcamp.com/album/punk-rolls-over-the-hill

There's plenty of fun to be had in listening to their versions of Orgasm Addict, Jackie & Judy and 12XU but my favourite is the Orchids cover (original version here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfqvhf-SqqU) which asks the question what would happen If Boys Got Pregnant...

Freak Genes - Nothing In Between Us

Charlie Murphy has already appeared on here this year with his band Internal Credit (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2019/01/internal-credit-internal-credit.html) and he returns today with a song from the new album by his band Freak Genes. A duo, as well as Charlie there's Andrew Anderson (Hipshakes/Proto Idiot), this is their third album (following on from Playtime and Qwak Qwak) so not unreasonably it's titled 111.  It's available from the ever reliable Drunken Sailor Records.
  Vinyl :   http://www.drunkensailorrecords.co.uk/products/637628-freak-genes-iii-lp-drunken-sailor-records-drunkensailor-106
  Digital   https://drunkensailorrecords.bandcamp.com/album/iii-lp

They're pitching the album as garage rock meets Gary Numan and also throwing names into the mix such as Wire, DAF, The Units, Flying Lizards and Lodger-era Bowie. What you get are 12 playful and inventive synth pop songs that are a joy to delve into. Quirky and unconventional, there's plenty of repeat play value.

They've released a video for the song Waxing Moon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIf8vserdY4) but I've decided to highlight a different one today.

This song would have probably been a Top 40 smash if it had been released before the charts went to shit. It's called Nothing In Between Us...
