Boudicca - Ellen

Something nice and tranquil for a Sunday morning from Boudicca (https://www.facebook.com/boudiccaaus), a band of history nerds with loud instruments from Muluubinba (Newcastle, Australia).

First up though a history lesson taken from the band's Facebook page...

"...a terrible disaster occurred in Britain. Two cities were sacked, eighty thousand of the Romans and of their allies perished... Moreover, all this ruin was brought upon the Romans by a woman..." - Dio, Roman History (LXII.1-2).

Fast forward to 2022 and happily, women are still causing uproar (although maybe not so happily in the impending clusterfuck that will be Liz Truss!).

Madeleine Mitchell has an impressive voice. Loud, raw, but she can hold a tune. She also has plenty to say on topics such as the spirit of women throughout history, the influential wife of Roman General Mark Antony, anarchist political activist Emma Goldman and (I think) IRA activist Mairéad Farrell.

The debut album by Boudicca plays out as a celebration of strong women who's life has been a struggle and who's stories should be remembered. The album is fittingly titled Tapestry (the definition of the tapestry of life being "The picture that people see when they look at us consists of all the threads woven into our tapestry from past events; past relationships, past encounters. It represents people who have touched our lives since we were born").

Not only does Madeleine give a powerful vocal performance but she's more than ably backed by Nic Quinlan (Guitar), Sam Stephens (Drums), Tegan Kinder (Bass) & Jacob Cummins (Lead Guitar and Tin Whistle). The album's available on vinyl and digital download :  https://boudicca.bandcamp.com/album/tapestry

This song came out as a single a few months ago and is accompanied by a pretty cool video, it's called Ellen...

A policeman is a disgrace to his country Not alone to the mother that suckled him Seek revenge for the human race Let no damned Englishman know my face My mother of her strength I spoke It appears you forget where you come from Forgo Ireland, your life- a joke! You clearly aren’t your emerald mother’s son Fuck the men who help them too Consider the shame, I implore you Whose land are you on? What kind of sick old bastard raised this son?
