Pink Suits - My Old Man's A Dustman

Sometimes you just want to listen to something fun. Shouty, sweary fun. And that's what I've been doing the last few days courtesy of Pink Suits (https://www.facebook.com/pinksuitsband).

They're a "Queer Feminist Punk Rock & Rage" duo based in Margate who formed in 2017 who've just released a rather amazing debut album titled Political Child. There's a much better review than this over on Louder Than War that throws comparisons around to the likes of White Stripes, Crass and Chumbawamba and I have to say that their eye catching video for Fake Great Britain  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf035k1myxo) did remind me of Danbert Nobacon and Alice Nutter stomping around. I also get a Victorian music hall vibe (the duo are well versed in dance and physical theatre). Maybe a more contemporary comparison would be Cockwomble meets Cold Meat. The message is serious but the delivery is often vaudeville.

Highlights are plenty and include Anarchist Wisdom which had me shouting along and Decades Back ("They’ll fuck the queers fuck the poor they’ll fuck the foreign ones even more drop the bombs even the score when money is power, all they want is more"). The title track begins "Your time is up mother fuckers... and tells those in authority "we're coming for you and we're gunning for change you’re gonna hear our noise you’re gonna feel our rage."

The track I'm highlighting is the first on the album and it's a little more restrained than many of the other tracks but the lyrics strike a chord. It's called My Old Man's A Dustman...

My mum asked me recently do you ever just switch off but there’s palm oil in everything and I’ve got a chronic cough there's warnings in the paper not to breathe the fucking air and white supremacist terrorists won’t be stopped with thoughts and prayers The rich won't pay their taxes but the poor get sent to jail and the rest of us pick up the slack when the bank’s too big to fail There’s children kept in cages their abusers all walk free everyone just turns their head it’s not effecting me the NHS is failing at the hands of tory scum I weep for failed America it’s a sign of what’s to come if you wanna have a baby still then contemplate it’s worth $10 000 each at least to overpopulate this earth the planets fucking burning and those with sway don’t care it’s up to us to foot the bill now that’s not very fair the media’s not mediating Murdoch’s made his bed just suppress the voters now democracy is dead Black lives fucking matter Now watch how you respond Neutrality is violence You’ve been silent for too long Our Trans brothers and sisters Need our voices in the fight You feel attacked because you’re wrong It’s not because you’re white The times they keep on changing And you try to block the way This fighting for equality Is every single day We are all responsible This world is fucking ours It’s time to strip authority From all abusive powers The queen is just for tourists So let’s sell her fucking crown our rents are on the rise again and the pound’s way fucking down The numbers just keep going up on people sleeping rough But theyre defined poverty and claimed they’d done enough so we’re eating out of food banks and working till were dead it’s getting harder to resist I can’t get out of bed My old man’s a dustman He’ll work until he’s dead He’ll grind his bones into the ground to make his daily bread
