So yesterday at work I was revisiting Pacer's excellent 2012 album Making Plans thinking how wonderful it still sounds (https://wearepacer.bandcamp.com/album/making-plans) and thinking aloud, I posed the question is it the best British punk release from the last decade. Obviously with taste being subjective most people would say no and offer up their own choice, one of those people being my old school mate Simmo who nominated The Media Whores' Decade Of Defiance compilation as his choice "one of the best bands I have ever known...they deserve a higher level... all the major bands they support at gigs... and great people... they deserve to be on your blog."
I'm sure they deserve more than that mate but I'll happily write a couple of paragraphs. Hailing from central Scotland they formed in August 2008 and have been sticking it to the establishment with their working class outsider rock ever since. The line up features Craig Anderson (lead vocals/guitar), Doogie Mackie (bass/backing vocals), Chris McArthur (guitar/backing vocals) and Andy Russell (drums/percussion). Bigger and better review sites than this have heaped copious amounts of praise on them doling out favourable comparisons with genre luminaries such as SLF, The Damned, Killing Joke and The Rezillos. Personally I'd say that whilst influenced by a wide range of golden era punksters and rockers they don't really sound too much like any of them, they've managed to come up with their own varied sound. So on the album's lengthy 18 track look back at their catalogue you'll find plenty to enjoy, there's even 3 new tracks from their upcoming 4th album which is pencilled in for later this year (you can review that one for me Simmo!).
Originally on the 2016 Mercury Music Award nominated album Dangerous Minds, this is an upbeat rocker which rather snappily rhymes "is this an earthquake beneath my feet" with "in the corridors of power I smell deceit." It's a protest song about hydraulic fracturing, the controversial method of getting gas or oil from beneath the ground. It's called Frack Off...
A song today that came out in 2016 on a 7" ep via Longshot Music & Randale Records. It's by RUST, a street rock n roll band from Sydney who've been around since 2005 and who's line up features Gazz Campbell (vocals), Bevynn (guitar), Smurf (drums), Michael Fearnley (bass) and Darrin (guitar). With a sound that combines elements of Aussie pub rock (The Angels, Rose Tattoo, early AC/DC) with the explosiveness associated with the likes of Motorhead, 4 Skins etc, they're renowned for serving up sweat drenched, adrenaline fuelled Rock n Roll. One of the Global Punk Network hosts is Dirk Ceustermans (although his show is hosted by his alter ego Zaphod Beeblebrox). His show airs on a Thursday and is pretty damn eclectic and also very good. The song you're getting today is one Dirk/Zaphod played on last week's show. Dirk is from Belgium and when he sent me this review he said "excuser my fringlish, perhaps sort out the errors?" I think I'll just replicate what he wrote as it's in the style of Zaphod's unique presenting voice.
Anyway, enough from me, here's Dirks review of the 2016 album by Lyon band DEFAITE (a band that have sadly since split up)....
DéFAITE - Post-Humain (Destructure Records, 2016)
It took me until Ade Bailey played a track in his radio show on Global Punk Radio recently, that I came across this short-lived outfit from Lyon, France. Mick asked me to review it, well okay! Post-Humain was recorded in 2015 and when it was released, in february 2016, Défaite was already defeated. 3 years earlier they released a 7" and before that a demo K7 (Frenchies abbreviate "Cassette" like that because K-sept (sept = seven) just sounds like the word), which sums up their output. I even noticed, browsing around, that they played gigs here in Belgium that time but unfortunately I was not aware of their existence. Taking out a record for a spin is always a great experience, this one even slightly delays the adventure as I linger on and enjoy the fantastic sleeve artwork from a guy called Benj, which is a colourful collage of threat, fear and despair illustrating the post human era we're approaching rapidly. So this artwork perfectly reflects the theme of the tracks. These songs -bar one- deal about a world of human beings that have lost their humanity (Futuristic, yet so familiar!). Everything's excellently recorded with both guitars spewing out riffs, sounding not overly distorted, bit "sec" even, yet, far from clean sounding! Supported, with precision, by a thobbing bass, thundering along with a superb sounding drumbeat. Sounds very pleasing into these ears!
Face A kicks in with a punker of a song! Le Jour d'apres (the day after), about the aftermath, it already gives away that this record promises to be a contender! Next one's (La vallée de l'etrange) about alienation from human clones, or rather is this about plain human beings to whom we do not feel belonging to? A slower track but great lyric "their human traits, so inhuman, in their prefab eyes... This artificial copy, this lifeless version of us, diving into the heart of reality, denying its own humanity" goosebumps!!! And so the 3 minutes punksongs deal furthermore about "punk topics" but seen from a different angle, both lyrically and musically keeps the attention till the end. Faves include the 2 already mentioned tracks, "L'Invention de Morel", which appears to be about a science fiction novell by A. Bioy Casares, published in 1940, "Drones", "Les Crépuscules des Idoles" which ends into an apocalyptic thunderstorm and an accoustic bit to end it all But the outstanding track must be Oublier, about how depressing solitude makes one forget feelings of joy and love. A bit off of the theme there, but how brilliantly put in words and music. There's really no filler on this superb release, perhaps the long ending of the last song puts you off (clocking in over 13 minutes) but, if that counts, it does add to the whole concept of this record. I'd rather not compare, I'm not good at that, but if you must, this could be placed in between Warsong and (the slower songs of) Péripherique Est. Top record! Zaphod Approved.
Whilst I was in Lancaster on Friday watching Autonomads, Bratakus and Dark Days my fellow Global Punk Network presenter Wayne Elliott was at The Library in Oxford checking out EkeBuba and The Celetoids. He was highly impressed by both and as I've already featured a song from Croatian band The Celetoids (http://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.co.uk/2017/11/the-celetoids-must-be-gremlins.html) today I'll post something by their fellow countrymen.

Describing themselves as speed punk and earning comparisons to the Reatards, the band are a manic buzzbomb of frantic noise. A glance at song titles such as Braindead, Booze and I'm An Addict would lead you to the conclusion that they're a good old fashioned bunch of diy rock n rollers hyped up to the max and you'd be right to think that. They don't fuck around, only one song on the Rat Bite cassette stretches past the 2 minute mark. The rest fly past in the blink of an eye (I'm sure if Wayne was writing this he'd tell you that their live shows are 20 manic minutes of flailing arms and sweaty bodies). Hopefully I'll catch them myself one day.
Diamond In The Dirt are a 4 piece hardcore grunge-punk band from London who formed in 2015 and line up with Sunny (guitar/vocals), Sam Tids (guitar/ backing vocals), Aden Maine (bass/ backing vocals) and Billy Fuller (drums). They list amongst their influences the likes of Nirvana, Frank Carter And The Rattlesnakes, CKY, Pulled Apart By Horses, Queens Of The Stone Age etc.

This is the title track of the ep, it's energetic, it's catchy and it'll make you want to smash things! I played it on last night's show and it went down a storm so I'll share it to a wider audience today. It's called Hopeless....
The Hangups are a melodic punk rock 3 piece from Malmo, Sweden who formed in 2015 and who's line up consists of Ale Hangup (guitar/vocals), Hugo (bass/backing vocals) and Jimmy (drums). They released their debut S/T ep digitally in 2016 but it's only recently become available on 7" vinyl from Monster Zero Records. Influenced by the likes of The Ramones, The Queers, Screeching Weasel, Teenage Bottlerocket etc, I find that this is a genre where the good bands often get lost amongst a surfeit of mediocrity. Not on this occasion though as The Hangups seem to get pretty much everything spot on. The songs are catchy & fun and the production is bang on the mark.
Opener Addicted will rattle around in your head like the best ear worms do. I Don't Wanna Be With You ups the pace nicely and is about realising you want out of a shitty relationship, Alone is a bright and breezy Teenage Bottlerocket style tune and closing track It Is You keeps things at a high tempo leaving you wanting more. Luckily there's plans for another ep later this year.
Ferris Wheel are from Minsk and have been together since 2015. If upbeat ska punk is your genre of choice then these could well be a band that you'll dig. They line up with Mihail Shestak (bass guitar), Andrew Bohdan (vocals), Rusian Poleshuk (guitar), Alex Romanov (trumpet), Nikolai Lifanov (trombone) and Alex Kunski (drums).

State Funeral are a 4 piece Hardcore band from Brighton UK, they are Archie (Vocals, also in Imposter), Charlie (Bass, also in Imposter / Gnarwolves), Idy (Guitar) and Joe (Drums, also in Vile Spirit / Lawful Killing) they have helped create a great live scene down in the south of England along with other local bands like Vile Spirit, Gutter Knife, Never, Imposter and Telekinesis.

Out of all the Top 10's I've posted on here thus far, my favourite is from Rebel Time Records' Randy Smith. Well, in this particular case, the gettin' was good! And what I got, in the form of a FB message, was an introduction to a band called Urban Vietcong.
Back in May of this year I received a FB message from a guy named Bebe who said he liked the label (Rebel Time Records) and wanted to let me know about the band Urban Vietcong (out of Livorno, Italy) which he sings for. He included a couple of videos and left it at that.
Sidenote: after some FB back-and-forth with Bebe later on, I was stoked to learn that Bebe and Urban Vietcong's bass player both played in another of my favourite Italian bands, Trade Unions. Bebe seemed stoked to learn that anyone outside of Italy had even heard of Trade Unions. Look for Trade Unions on Youtube ...
The first video was for the lead-off song "Attacco" from the band's debut release, a 6-song CD called "A Colpi de Machete." What the heck, I press play, and, immediately, just one bite in, realize that this is good, real real good. An ooey-gooey, super-catchy, 3 minute almalgamation of streetpunk/oi and left-radical politics. In fact, the whole album is quite simply a pot of political punk rock gold, chock full of songs of protest and resistance.
Visually, the video starts off with a quote from Davide Rosci, imprisoned in Italy for his part in the 2011 riots in Rome that saw an armoured police vehicle set ablaze (He was released just a short time ago). Sonically, the video starts off with a sound bite from the movie 'Giordano Bruno,' something along the line of "all men are equal and have the right to think and raise their heads to the sky where the sun shines on the truth." Lyrically, the song deals with, as Bebe put it, "what should we, the proletariat (understood as workers, students, unemployed) do to organize, create and be more united..." Looking at the Italian lyrics, I noticed it name-checked, for example, the Black Panthers, the Viet Cong and the Palestian resistance and called for unity, organization, priortization and attack. A lot to chew on in just one song.
Musically, Urban Vietcong hits the sweet spot. Attacco is an instantly memorable, melodic and meaningful song. It's taut, it's tense, it's tough. Catchy-as-heck, anthemic, shout-a-long streetpunk(as are all the songs on the album). The kind of song that has me singing along after a first listen. Personally, I'd say the band are, in terms of music and message, comparable to such equally inciteful and insightful contemporaries as Action Sedition, Afterboltxebike, Cor Fort, Mossin Nagant, RPG-7, etc. All bands that, I guess, could be lumped together as 'redcore' bands and all bands that I have on repeat.
Apparently, the band will be back in the studio to record their second album early in 2018. Something to look forward to for sure.

Mark Wynn is a York based performance artist who I only recently stumbled across and whom I know very little about. I've read that his live performances can often leave audiences open mouthed at his eccentric ramblings. Vibrations Magazine asks "is it stand up? Is it performance art? Is it just silly? Is it punk? Is it just a Fall rip-off? It may be all these things and it may be none of them, but it is very, very, very funny indeed." Other reviewers describe him as being akin "to the nutter on the bus", "possessed by the devil in a mid LSD trip" and "the absolute pits." I suppose it's better to divide an audience than to bore them...
In a previous incarnation he was a member of a band called Hijak Oscar before reinventing himself as an eccentric oddity. I've never heard Hijak Oscar but I'm guessing they weren't anything like as interesting or entertaining as his current guise.

Kickback Generation are a political punk band from the north east of England who formed in 2012 and boast a line up of Jim Thoroughgood (bass/vocals), Mick Robson (guitar/vocals) and Paul "Puss" Sowerby (drums). Influenced by the likes of Billy Bragg, The Clash, Social Distortion, Gimp Fist etc they've thus far they've released 2 albums, Waiting For The Punchline (2014) and Rant (2016). Today's song is taken from the latter of those.
One gig they have got lined up is their appearance on the Introducing Stage at this year's Rebellion Festival. They'll be playing on the Friday (4th Aug) so if you're in Blackpool make sure to check them out.

So we're going to be having another election in the UK. It looks like the result is a foregone conclusion, the electorate are going to vote for continuing with the austerity option, cheered on by the vast majority of the press who really don't seem to like Jeremy Corbyn's disunited Labour Party. Call for a strong NHS, less of a gap between the haves and the have nots, more talk/less bombing, fairer taxing of multinationals and better standards of education for our young and it seems you get labelled a crank. Yeah, Corbyn comes across as an idealist without much of a clue how to actually put his ideas into practice but that's not really a surprise given that most stories are rewritten to suit the agendas of those who have the loudest voice. Personally I'd rather give an idealist the chance to aim towards a better and fairer future, maybe it's an impossible dream but better trying and failing than carrying on as we are. Haircut are a female fronted hardcore punk band from Charlottesville, Virginia who's line up features Juliana (vocals), Daniel B (guitar), Ben (bass) and Daniel R (drums). A couple of them previously played in Animal Planet.
I'm posting a song today that should have been on here last year but it seems to have been overlooked for some reason. It's by Vanity, a band from New York who started off as a duo (Evan Radigan & Colman Durkee) but have now expanded in numbers and moved away from their Oi influenced sound more towards a glam/ Brit Pop vibe. Don't worry though, they're still well worth your time.
The Nuts are a female fronted pop punk 3 piece from Piacenza in Italy who's line up features Vale (vocals/bass), Molby (guitar/backing vocals) and Palmi (drums/backing vocals). I first came across them a few years ago when they released an impressive self titled ep and now 3 years later they're back with debut album, Upside Down. You probably won't be surprised that they play catchy Ramones influenced tunes, there's plenty of bands that do but The Nuts are better than most. My favourite song on the album is probably Can't Seem To Get Away (From You) but as there's a video for A Night With You, I'll go with that......
