Falaun - Night Witches
Back in 2016 when I featured a song by Sheffield synth punks Nachthexen, I told you that they took their name from the German nickname for the women military aviators of the 558th Night Bomber Regiment (later known as the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment) of the Soviet Air Forces. The English translation for Nachthexen is Night Witches. Today's song is about them so I thought I'd start by posting a link to an interesting article : https://www.history.com/news/meet-the-night-witches-the-daring-female-pilots-who-bombed-nazis-by-night
Falaun (https://www.facebook.com/falaunhc/) are a hardcore anarcho punk 3 piece (Chris, Kate, Sam) from Liverpool. They've just released an album titled Fools which they describe as 17 tracks of raging scouse hardcore. It's chock a block full of short, sharp blasts of political punk. There's a mix of both male and female vocals and the energy levels remain high throughout. Lyrics tell us to "stand up, get off your knees, don't be a part of the machine" that "this can be overthrown" and to "tear down the prison." It's thoughtful protest music from a band I only recently discovered and who I think deserve sharing with a wider audience. The album's available on cd from Dead Invoices Records (though they're a little delayed by the pandemic) and as a digital download : https://deadinvoicesrecords.bandcamp.com/releases
This is the track I mentioned earlier about the "Russian heroes of the war", it's called Night Witches...
