38 Coffin (https://www.facebook.com/38COFFIN) are Lauren Goffin (vocals/guitar), Lindsay Scarey (bass), Andre McGuire (lead guitar) & Dain Hudson (drums). They're from Seattle and they're influenced by all your favourite surf rock, rockabilly & garage bands.
They've just released an album titled Leopard Spots which boasts 11 twangtastic batcave style garage punk tracks. Think The Cramps, The Munsters and haunted beaches and you won't be far off. It's available on coloured vinyl (ltd to 200 copies) and digital download : https://38coffin.bandcamp.com/album/leopard-spots
You'll be able to see them live next month if you're in Belgium or Germany...
One of the highlights from a very enjoyable album is about New York guitarist/singer Johnny Thunders who you'll remember from the New York Dolls and later The Heartbreakers...
I don't often post covers on here but this is the 2nd in 3 days. Hopefully it proves as popular as the previous one.
Mr. Splice Guy are a new collaboration between Brand New Luddites (https://brandnewluddites.bandcamp.com/) and Underwater Bosses (https://underwaterbosses.bandcamp.com/). Their vocalist has this singing malarkey in his genes as he's a descendent of Von Trapp Family (who were immortalised in The Sound Of Music).
It features 6 Devo covers that take the essence of the originals and adds twangy surf rock guitars. It tackles both the "hits" and the "lesser known classics" and it adds a pleasingly fresh spin.
This was always one of my favourite Devo songs, one I bought on 7" vinyl on one of my frequent school lunchtime trips to my local indie record store. It's called The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprise...
The Courettes (https://www.facebook.com/courettes) are husband and wife duo Flavia (vocals/guitar) and Martin (drums/vocals) Couri. Flavia's from Brazil, Martin's from Denmark and between them they serve up some of the best 60's inspired garage rock you'll hear. If anyone's unfamiliar with them then head over to Bandcamp and indulge yourselves... https://thecourettes.bandcamp.com/
Tomorrow sees the release of their classy new single which adds plenty of twangy surf to their signature garage style. Think Dick Dale and Duane Eddy, think The Cramps and Kate & Cindy from The B-52's. It's a great teaser for their upcoming album Back In Mono. It'll be released on 7" by Damaged Goods https://damagedgoods.co.uk/discography/the-courettes-hope-the-twig/
A Slang term for dying in the 19th century, this is Hop The Twig...
The Mudd Club are a trio based in Machynlleth, Wales (https://www.facebook.com/themuddclub/) with a line up of Sadie Capps (vocals/guitar), Julian West (drums) and Huw Hickman (bass). Sadie and Julian are from Lawrence, Kansas and were weaned on a diet of 50's, 60's & 70's surf and rock n roll music. Presumably taking their name from the famous late 70's/early 80's New York City nightclub, they take their love of surf rock and mix it with "delinquent garage punk" to brew up a flavoursome concoction.
They've got a new album out titled Bottle Blonde and it's been causing a few ripples down in the valleys with plenty of local radio airplay. You can find it here : https://www.themuddclubband.com/
Showing why they've been called the Welsh Amyl And The Sniffers, this track is titled Bored To Death...
Today's song isn't a new release, the video you'll see below is a couple of years old, but it was on a recent compilation album and it is bloody good so it's getting posted.
Dartgun were formed in 2004 in Portland, Oregon, by Chuck Thrust (lead vocals/rhythm guitar/bari sax) and had their sound augmented 3 years later by the introduction of backing vocalists The Vignettes. They style themselves a "psychedelic punk rock doo-wop group" though I have to confess I only came across them recently and have only thus far heard a handful of tracks. I have discovered that they look to be lots of fun with the track I'm featuring today managing to make me think simultaneously of both The B-52's and The Dead Kennedys.
Aside from vocalist Chuck, the band also features Chad Dit It (bass), Bob Fountain (keyboard), Andrew Scanlan (lead guitar), Nathan Thorsen plus The Vignettes; Kat Aklysm & Christine (fellow Vignette Dana Thompson who features on this song sadly passed away last year).
Volume Bomb The Cops is a new charity compilation album featuring some very cool bands such as Millions Of Dead Cops, Dead Kennedys, D.O.A. etc that... "was born from our individual experiences and our frustration with the status quo around police power and use of deadly force, specifically pertaining to people of color; as well as the utter lack of oversight or repercussions for officers who murder people in the street. Now, with riots in our cities, and protesters of all stripes being beaten down, shot, gassed and maced, the timing for this record has never been more relevant." ALL PROCEEDS from the record will be donated to "Don't Shoot PDX", a Portland based community non-profit working to increase civic participation and social change to create racial equity and equality. You can find it here : https://volumebomb.bandcamp.com/album/volume-bomb-the-cops
This was the song that stood out for me, it's "a rock n roll fueled surfed up doo-wop battle cry" and it's called The Church Of Monday Night Football...
If you enjoy Ralph's reviews and the bands he recommends then can I point you in the direction of a new Facebook group he's started called The Switchblade New Wave which he's trying to build up into "a kind of online zine where people can turned on to ALL kinds of music." https://www.facebook.com/groups/303401970895679
And now, over to Ralph...
Ladies and Gentleman, Boys and Girls let me introduce you to your new favourite band. Vegan Piranha hail from Bayonne, France and keeping with the tradition of kick ass French Punk rock bands, in 2017 they released their debut album "Last Scream Of Youth". 11 songs of pure Beach Punk/80's Hardcore perfection. But now it's 2020 and what does this band of French miscreants drop on us? A 11 song LP called "Kill All The Surfers". Continuing on their mastery of the Night Birds/Smogtown blend of mixing total Surf Riffs with balls out Punk Rock these guys are ready to take over the Underground!
Summer's over (or at least it is in Chorley). The nights are drawing in, there's a chill in the air and next week the clocks go back. Not to worry though, today Tommy And The Rockets will be brightening up the day with a track from their brand new split ep, Split The Waves.
Hotter than hell here today. The UK's been so hot this week that even Saddleworth Moor, usually a place shrouded in gloom and mist has seen fires breaking out everywhere. So I think all this sun is deserving of something appropriate, something like the surf sounds served up by The Terrorsurfs.
The band hail from that famous beach resort of Birmingham! (I think the only previous UK surf band I've posted on here were The Atoms and they come from another place known for it's golden beaches and impressive waves.....Derby!!!). Anyway, their new album features a line up of El Guapo (guitar), TT Shaker (drums), Bamalam (bass) and The Reverend Tonto (more guitars) though tragically the drummer recently passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer. According to Bandcamp, all members contribute various shouting, screaming, grunting & yelling but the order of the day is mainly instrumental, garage punk influenced surf tuneage. Members also play in a covers band called S Punk 7.
El Guapo and TT Shaker released a couple of albums on Wild Records as The Terrorsaurs (https://theterrorsaurs2.bandcamp.com/) before expanding into the Terrorsurfs, moving to surf label Sharawaji Records and releasing firstly 2016's Zomboid Surf Attack album and then recent follow up Mutant Surfin' Trash. Check them out here : https://theterrorsurfs.bandcamp.com/
I came across a cool instrumental surf album recently and though I knew nothing about The Aquaholics I decided I had to post a tune on here. A bit of digging and I found out that they formed over 10 years ago in Chicago and despite recording an album with legendary producer Mass Giogini they split up before it was released. Fast forward to 2015 and Psycho Satanic Surf Party was finally completed and released. Oh, I forgot to mention, it seems that following their split, they went on to become one of pop punks best bands, Kobanes. You learn something new every day!
That wasn't the album that I'd stumbled across though.
A couple of days ago, on Halloween, they released a second album. This one is self produced, features Marky (guitar/vocals), Johnny (bass), Andy (guitar) and Ryan (drums). Ryan Flynn (keys) and Kevin Cascino (trumpets) guest. It's titled Surfing With Satan and it's wonderful. It's "dark satanic instrumental surf" that's very different from Kobanes but which will appeal to their fans. There's lots of great retro tunes, most of them feature spooky soundbites and it even features a few covers of songs by the likes of Devo and The Trashmen. You can check out both albums here : https://theaquaholicsrock.bandcamp.com/
Deadlier than Dracular, wilder than The Werewolf, more frightening than Frankenstein..... This is Trog Stomp
