Sick Thoughts - Poor Boys

The normally prolific DD Owen has been fairly quiet of late with just a Demos album (https://sick-thoughts.bandcamp.com/album/goner-lp-demos) and a cover of the Thin Lizzy classic Killer On The Loose (https://leglessrecords.bandcamp.com/track/killer-on-the-loose) appearing on my radar since he put out an excellent Self Titled Sick Thoughts album back in 2018                                         (https://sick-thoughts.bandcamp.com/album/sick-thoughts).

He's back now though with a couple of upcoming releases on Goodbye Boozy Records. Both will be out on Feb 10th. There's an album released under the pseudonym DD Deth which comes with the warning "FITLHY SOUND. NOT FOR WIMPS." Ltd to 200 copies on vinyl, it's a lo-fi thrash metal/punk hybrid. https://goodbyeboozydigital.bandcamp.com/album/dd-deth

And then there's a new Sick Thoughts single which is a little more polished (though no less raucous). The A side is a classy garage stomper with an insistent (presumably keyboard?) riff that has me thinking Jerry Lee Lewis on acid. The flip side, Drug Rock, is another high energy rock n roller and is equally as impressive. The single's limited to 300 copies of which 69 will be in a pink cover.  Check it out...  https://sick-thoughts.bandcamp.com/album/poor-boys-drug-rock

  This is Poor Boys...

Sick Thoughts - Black Leather

The prolific and very talented Drew Owen last appeared on here back in August as a member of Helsinki duo Baby's Blood  (http://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/08/babys-blood-everybody-looks-like.html). I mentioned then that he was moving back to the States and that there was another Sick Thoughts album imminent. That album, the third Sick Thoughts long player, came out shortly afterwards and it features 12 catchy songs dripping in attitude, buzzsaw guitars and garage punk cool. It's a Self Titled affair and you can get the vinyl version from Goner Records  http://www.goner-records.com/cart/ It's also available digitally here :  https://sick-thoughts.bandcamp.com/album/sick-thoughts

2019 also promises to be a busy one for Drew as he's starting a tape club. Between January and June members will receive 6 tapes, a shirt and 6 pin buttons. For more details click here : https://ddowen.bigcartel.com/product/dd-owen-tape-club-2019 There's also going to be a West Coast tour.

This is one of the many highlights from the album, it's called Black Leather...

Sick Thoughts - Wasting My Youth

So it appears that Drew Owen's move from his native US to Helsinki hasn't slowed down his musical output. Not only have we had a number of splits where he's collaborated with the likes of Shitty Life, Die Rotzz and Joni Ekman (I wouldn't be surprised if there's been more that I've missed) he also released the excellent D D Owen album on which as well as the vocals he also contributed guitar, bass, drums and synthesizer ( https://ddowen.bandcamp.com/releases ).

Today sees the release, on Neck Chop Records, of a new album. This time he's reverted back to his Sick Thoughts moniker and I'm glad to say that the move to Finland hasn't improved his mood any. He still needs no one, he's young & suicidal, he does what he wants to do so fuck your heart and rot in hell etc.... As he says on the opener, "I'm going nowhere & I don't care." The album's called Songs About People You Hate and as you'd expect it's more of the snotty, bile filled lo-fi garage scuzziness that we've come to know and love.

Check it out here : https://neckchoprecords.bandcamp.com/album/songs-about-people-you-hate

I could have featured any of the songs on this update, they're all strong enough, but as I'm quite partial to handclaps I'm going with this possibly autobiographical commentary about how he spends his time sitting in his room getting fucked up "can't get a job, can't get girls, I am all alone, I have no life..." (all those songs don't write and record themselves Drew! You ain't wasting fuck all my friend). This is Wasting My Youth....

Chicken Chain - Glug Glug Glug

This is probably one of the coolest songs on here. Not that the "people" who's Sick Thoughts came up with such a feverish whirlwind of urgent, driving noise are aiming for cool. I think they just want to fuck shit up. If that's the case, job's a good 'un as they say in these parts.

The lead off track from the debut album by Chicken Chain, (the album is entitled Birth Of The Googus),  reminds me somewhat of The Urinals' classic Ack, Ack, Ack, Ack and anything that does that must, by default, be a winner.

You can find the lp on randomly coloured vinyl (though as it's out on Snot Releases you really have to aim for the green!) by clicking here : http://www.snotreleases.com/home/?section=new-releases . They're not going to be sitting on the shelves for long so (with the band's permission) I'm adding all the tracks to Youtube so no one misses the party.

They say that history is written by the victors. This is something along those lines, Baltimore evil genius, Drew Owen, who featured in another guise on this blog last year, was kind enough to write the following.......

"On the verge of losing their jobs at the oh so popular fast food restaurant, Burger King, 4 16 year olds from Baltimore wrote a punk record in 45 minutes and recorded it on their 4 track. Drew Owen found them at his old high school and stole their demo tape so that he could put it out on his friend's new label, Snot Releases. No word has been given as to the whereabouts of the original Chicken Chain members.

Drew Owen plans to run with the Chicken Chain torch by starting to play live shows eventually whilst he focuses on getting out of school alive."

Sick Thoughts - Frustrated

"I can't get a date, so gotta masturbate....."

If, instead of writing a blog, I was a radio dj, and I had a record of the week slot whereby I selected the best of the weeks new releases, Frustrated by Sick Thoughts would now be booming out on the nation's airwaves. Rather impressively, the ep which it comes from, Fat Kid With A 10 Inch, which is just out on Slovenly Recordings, has 4 tracks streaming on bandcamp and all four sound equally impressive (check 'em out here : https://slovenly.bandcamp.com/album/sick-thoughts-fat-kid-with-a-10-inch-comes-with-poster ).
The brainchild of Baltimore resident Drew Owen, a guy who at only 17 years old is producing some of the most exciting new punk songs you're likely to hear, Sick Thoughts must be one of the most prolific acts around (check out their entry in Discogs. How Many releases in the last couple of years!!!!!.... http://www.discogs.com/artist/3399802-Sick-Thoughts ).
Drew plays all the instruments himself when recording whilst onstage he's joined by just a drummer. Many of his recordings are cheap, rough and ready but in a good way, the Fat Kid ep though sounds, to my tender ears, like a step up and will hopefully lead to greater things. A story of sexual frustration which would have fitted in beautifully on an early Buzzcocks 7", this is Frustrated.....
