The Dissidents - History Repeats

  

  In my last update I wrote "When I'm looking for music to feature on here and on the show there's a few must go to UK labels that I keep my eye on. These include Grow Your Own Records, Drowning Sailor, Serial Bowl Records, Brassneck Records and Little Rocket Records. All great labels who are very reliable. If they're releasing something you can pretty much guarantee it'll be a winner."

  Helping to prove my point are Grow Your Own Records who've just released a new album titled A Better World. It's a split lp featuring Philadelphia political punks The Dissidents (https://www.facebook.com/dissidentsphilly) and California anarcho punks D.O.V.E.

  The album maintains this standard throughout with both bands bringing their A game.

  Today I'm going to highlight a tragically all too topical song, it's called History Repeats...

Dogma - Disarm Or Die

  

  Dogma (https://www.facebook.com/Dogmapeacepunks) are the anarcho/peace punk band from Ottawa who graced Just Some Punk Songs a year ago with a track from their very fine Pils Sessions ep (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2022/03/dogma-world-peace.html).

  They return today with equally as impressive new music from a 7 track ep titled Disarm Or Die. Again it's released on the consistently great Grow Your Own Records  https://growyourownrecords.bandcamp.com/album/disarm-or-die

  The lyrics tread a well worn path for this type of music but they're oft used themes for a reason. They're important tropes which deserve hammering home and vocalist Steph does a great job enunciating those words. Take for example the plea for a world without bombs, a world without borders, a world without hate, a world with no war. It's really not that much to ask for is it? 

 This is the title track, it offers up a stark choice. Disarm Or Die... 

  

Alternative - What Revolution?

  

If you want to change the system
Better start with yourself...

  Back in the 80's, Dunfermline punk band Alternative (https://www.facebook.com/alternativeautonomyandpeace) were regarded by many as the Scottish Crass. Despite being originally influenced more by The Crass and aiming to carve out their own sound, they did share many of Crass' lyrical concerns. They're a band who "spoke up against the injustices of the world and helped make some people create an opinion for themselves."

  They were very prolific back in the day with numerous releases including the 1984 album If They Treat You Like Shit - Act Like Manure (https://sealedrecords2.bandcamp.com/album/if-they-treat-you-like-shit-act-like-manure).

  This album is regarded as something of a classic but it could have been even better with the inclusion of a song which was dropped at the last minute for a live track (not even the band can remember why this happened).

  Fear not though, the song, a 2 and a half minute classic burst of "impassioned and raging anarcho punk with duel female and male vocals" has finally seen the light of day almost 4 decades later. It's the title track of an ep on Sealed Records. The ep, available on 7" (white or black) vinyl and digital download also features a couple of different mixes of old favourites. Dogma - The World A Peace

  

  A very topical song today by Ottawa anarcho/peace punks Dogma (https://www.facebook.com/Dogmapeacepunks). 

  They're an atmospheric quartet featuring a line up of James (drums), Steph (vocals), Ricky (bass) & Justin (guitar). They formed in 2017 and their 2020 Self Titled album was one of that years best releases (https://anthraxuk.bandcamp.com/album/dogma-4).

 

  They return today with the opening track on a new 5 song ep from Pils Sessions titled Dogma Session #08 02​/​22. We're treated to 3 new original compositions, a cover of The Mob's 1980 single Witch Hunt and a re recorded version of Indoctrination, a song from the debut album. Topics covered include world peace, consumerism, colonialism and the ruling elite. It's the first time in the studio for the band for 2 years and they had this to say  "A lot's changed, even for us as a band, since our last session in the studio almost exactly two years before this one, but we're beyond appreciative of the opportunity and thankful to be able to share our tunes with you, courtesy of PILS Sessions. At a time like this - in our city, in our society and in our world - we remember what matters.. hold yourself and your circles accountable in your fight for a better world."
