Cutters - Landlord Nation

Cutters (https://www.facebook.com/cutters138) are the Melbourne hardcore punk band who formed in 2019 and who first featured on here the following year  (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2020/07/cutters-chewed-up-fortune.html).

Since then they've been turning out great release after great release (here's a couple of them :  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2021/06/cutters-australian-war-crimes.html /  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2021/09/cutters-midnight-bus.html).

And now they're back with one of the highlights from their excellent debut album Psychic Injury. The band line up is SAVAGE GARBAGE - Vocals, GAZ - Guitar (STIFF RICHARDS), BAD BOY BRENNY - Bass (POLUTE / PUBLIC HOUSE) & DIRTY BIRD DONOHUE - Drums. The music is unrelenting. Pounding and pummeling but always accessible to those of us who like our noise to be tuneful.

It's available on several different colours of vinyl (very ltd so don't hang around) and digital download : https://cuttersmelbourne.bandcamp.com/album/psychic-injury

This track is about greedy hoarders, it's called Landlord Nation...

Hoard the land, hoard the houses, collect the rent, collect the wages,
passive income, collect the wages, people will pay for a place to live.

You got title, hoard the houses, you got capital, hoard the houses,
against the fourth, buy the fifth, people will pay for a place to live.

People will pay for a place to live.

If you can't inherit someone else's wealth, you're gonna be left living life on the shelf.

Landlord nation, there's something wrong,
they've been doing land hoards for far too long.

cutters - Midnight Bus

Me and my baby, we left on the midnight bus

Yay! A nice surprise. It's been less than 4 months since Melbourne punks cutters (https://www.facebook.com/cutters138) released their excellent Australian War Crimes ep (How do I know it was excellent? Because the folk in the chatroom when I played tracks from it on the Just Some Punk Songs show kept telling me it was) but they've just popped up with a new track.

This time tomorrow he'll be mine

It's a cover of a song written by John D Loudermilk
which was a big hit in Australia for Betty McQuade

We fell out and had an awful fuss

cutters' take on the song is unsurprisingly the most raucous version. To my ears it's almost veering off into garage punk territory (in the way that Mark E Smith did with a few of the more ramshackle Fall covers). It's might fine indeed and you can snap it up here :  https://cuttersmelbourne.bandcamp.com/track/midnight-bus

He's gone, my baby's gone and I'm alone

  It's called Midnight Bus...

Cutters - Australian War Crimes

I've been looking through the playlist for this week's Just Some Punk Songs show (https://www.facebook.com/events/335607014613180/) and I've noticed there's 7 bands from Australia, 6 of which are from Melbourne. One of those bands feature on here today.

Cutters (https://www.facebook.com/cutters138) burst out of nowhere last year to grab a spot in the JSPS end of year chart with this killer track from their impressive debut Self Titled ep (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2020/07/cutters-chewed-up-fortune.html). I described the ep as "an explosive force of nature so batten down the hatches."

They, Destructo (vocals) Tim (who is also in Stiff Richards) (guitar) Stringer (bass) & Max (drums),  returned in April of this year with more of the same in the form of the 6 track Modern Problems ep and now, just a couple of months later, we're treated to half a dozen more incendiary blasts of pent up aggression. The Australian War Crimes ep kicks off with a punked up version of an excerpt from a 1921 poem by Bertolt Brecht. The pace picks up even more with Kitchen Window, an insistent and dark banger that is one of the ep's highlights. Concrete and lies is about the conurbation of what was once a beautiful land whilst I'd Rather Die Than Live In Rye incorporates some pretty impressive guitar work. Long Term is a 26 second blast about memory loss and that just leaves the title track...

Australian War Crimes is a reaction to the recent revelations of Australian SAS soldiers doing some really grim shit in Afghanistan, as detailed in the Brereton Report. I'm pretty sure it's going to go down a storm in the show's chatroom later today. You can get the ep on ltd edition red or black vinyl or as a name your price download here : https://cuttersmelbourne.bandcamp.com/album/australian-war-crimes

  This is Australian War Crimes...

This is the opposite of nostalgia, a sick distaste for the fatherland. The Australian Special Air Service murders prisoners in Afghanistan. Whose wages do you pay? Whose lives do they take?

Cutters - Chewed Up Fortune

When I posted Australian band Owen Guns yesterday I mentioned how well they'd gone down with the folk in the chatroom for this week's Just Some Punk Songs show. The band that got the best reception though was their fellow countrymen, cutters. Unknown to me before last week, I'm guessing they're a pretty recent addition to the punk scene and if so, they've certainly made their mark with their new Self Titled 3 track ep.

They're from Melbourne, they line up with Al (vocals), Tim (guitar), Stringer (bass) and Max (drums) and they're somewhat of a noisy proposition. The song I played on the show is the lead track on the ep, it's titled Chewed Up Fortune and it's a relentless 3 minute adrenaline rush of pounding drums, wailing guitars and shouted vocals. It reminds me a little of another Melbourne band, Clowns. Next up is a short sharp hardcore blast railing against debt collectors and faceless bureaucracy and things conclude with a 5 minute epic about an oncoming storm that's taking barns, taking lives & forcing families down to their basements. Like the band themselves, it's an explosive force of nature so batten down the hatches.

It's recorded by Redro Redriguez and as with pretty much everything I feature from Australia it's mixed and mastered by the ubiquitous Mikey Young. It's available on 7" black vinyl (ltd to 150 copies) and digital download : https://cuttersmelbourne.bandcamp.com/album/cutters

  This is Chewed Up Fortune...

Got no time for false mystique,
I'm not fucked up, I'm not a freak, I just want to fucking sleep, I just want to fuck and sleep, small steps only, no big leaps, drag my knuckles, drag my feet, roll me in designer sheets, roll me now I'm pretty weak. Got the time so take a seat, this ain't where I planned to be, it's just where I happen to be, not too sure what's happened to me, the days are turning into weeks, I just want it all for free, no returns, there's no receipts, fortune's chewed up in these teeth.
