The Prostitutes - Hung By The Phone (Remastered)

  

  Punk legend Kevin McGovern has featured on this blog numerous times with his band The Prostitutes (https://www.facebook.com/tutespunk) and various other projects such as The Trouble Seekers, The Inversions & 12 Guage Pinup.   He's back today as I want to share a song from a new compilation album by The Prostitutes. It's titled Broken Ballads & Savage Beats and it features 16 tracks of "Unreleased, Compilation Tracks, Demos, Alternate Versions, Singles spanning 1991-2019."   It's a great comp packed with classic Kill By Death style punk tunes. It's timeless stuff by a band that never disappoints. I'll play a different song on this week's Just Some Punk Songs show but on here I'll highlight the remastered version of a song that was originally released as a single in 2002 by The Inversions. They were a short lived trio formed after the Prostitutes split up (for the first time) and saw Kevin joined by Doug and Dave McKean. It's called Hung By The Phone...

  An exercise in brevity today... 

  I've written plenty about The Prostitutes (https://www.facebook.com/tutespunk) over the last few years. They've been around for 26 years now, fronted by the ever present Kevin McGovern. The other members may change, as may the band's location, but the music remains kick ass punk rock. 

  It's not that long ago since the release of the Shapeshift 7" but they're swiftly back with a new track. Recorded in Columbus, Ohio and hot out of the studio, it's a 1 minute adrenalin rush that Kevin describes as both experimental and abrasive. The Prostitutes - Shapeshift

  A welcome return to The Prostitutes (https://www.facebook.com/tutespunk) today, the band headed up by vocalist Kevin Patrick McGovern who've been releasing Johnny Thunders/Germs/Sex Pistols etc influenced old school punk rock music since 1995.   They've a new ep coming any day now from Last Punk Rockers Records (https://lastpunkrockersrecords.bigcartel.com/). It'll be available on 7" vinyl. I've had the digital version for a couple of months but I've been holding off posting anything on here as the release date kept getting pushed back due to delays at the pressing plant in Germany. Supposedly it shipped last week and will be out hopefully this week. 

  All 3 tracks are very good, Kevin's vocals are as passionate as ever and as always, he's surrounded himself with a very able supporting cast. Coming in at a trim, fat free 6 minutes, the ep is noise pollution of the best kind. Paraphrasing the track I'll debut on this week's Just Some Punk Songs show (airs later today so tune in : https://www.facebook.com/events/228796615349390), get that needle in the red and crack the sound up to 10.

The Prostitutes - Cheap Highs

  It's been a while since I've posted anything by The Prostitutes, I've noticed a drip feed of remastered tracks on their Bandcamp page in recent months but they've just released a brand new song so no further excuse is needed to get them back on here today. The song is called Cheap Highs and it's available as a name your price download.   Music and lyrics are written by frontman Kevin McGovern whilst the most recent line up of the band also features JR Matthew (guitar) and Barry Jewels (drums). Nearly a quarter of a century from their formation, they've relocated to Baltimore, Maryland and whilst they might have been a little more sporadic with their releases of late there's been no drop in quality. A new ep is being recorded and will be out this summer. There's also a split 7" with The Pegs in the works. Kevin tells me he's written 10 new songs in the past month and will be recording them as soon as possible.

The Prostitutes - Robotic

  The Prostitutes have graced this blog several times down the years so I'm guessing you don't need much of an intro to them today. Previously from Long Beach but now relocated to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, frontman Kevin McGovern and his band of merry men return with a brand new 6 track ep titled Don't Want A Future.   We were treated to a preview of the ep back in September when they released the excellent Give Me Head Or Give Me Death, the 5 new tracks certainly lives up to that teaser track. The song I'm featuring today is the one which features the lyric "Don't Want A Future." It's a driving, mid paced track with a chorus to die for. This is Robotic.... 

The Prostitutes - Give Me Head or Give Me Death

 

  Here's something hot off the presses. The Prostitutes are back with a new song, it's a teaser for a forthcoming ep which will follow shortly once the other two songs have been completed. For those of you that have been living in a cave for the last 20+ years, The Prostitutes are the Long Beach, California punk band that are responsible or numerous classics such as the Pelado Records released Can't Teach Kids Responsibility album and it's follow up Kill Them Before They Eat. There's also the excellent Get Sicker singles compilation and the 2013 compilation of previously unreleased material. That's without mentioning a string of killer singles (Get Sick, Twenty Two etc, etc...). This is the band that Faster And Louder's Lord Rutledge claims boasts a frontman with "the greatest punk voice of his time." High praise indeed but he's reviewed pretty much every band that matters down the years so he should know a thing or two.

  So what's different this time around? Pretty much nothing. Despite Kevin Patrick McGovern having relocated to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he's still at odds with the humdrum world, be it the people around him or the vacuous shows on tv. He's looking for a buzz he'll never forget. Musically the band are on top form with their Johnny Thunders, Germs, Zero Boys, Sex Pistols... inspired down and dirty punk rock sleaze. Welcome back guys, you ain't skipped a beat.
