The Briefs - Hospital Elevator

The Briefs (https://www.facebook.com/TheBriefs) are no strangers to Just Some Punk Songs with a string of featured songs over the last decade and a bit. As well as that, frontman Steve E Nix has recently featured with new band Taste Testors (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2025/02/taste-testors-she-didnt-tell-me-she-was.html).

Today he's back on Briefs duty as they've just released a new single. As the band are celebrating their 25th anniversary it seems fitting the single is produced by Kurt Bloch (The Fastbacks guitarist produced the very first Briefs 7" Poor And Weird back in 1999). It's the sound of a band getting back to their roots.

To promote the single, the band will be touring (things kick off with a number of English shows)...

It's available on 7" via TKO Records on blue or red vinyl (https://tkorecords.bigcartel.com/) and you can check out both songs on Spotify :  https://open.spotify.com/album/3pz57gYdWF2KiNM2SOdUjB

This song sees Nix commenting "There’s nicer hospital visits and then there’s seedier ones, like where there’s cops and people withdrawing and sketchy guys in handcuffs and all that.  And you’re trying to find your girlfriend and it’s 4am and you’re in an elevator.  The song is along those lines. With a cool beat.” It's called Hospital Elevator...

The Briefs - GMO Mosquito

When a band as popular as The Briefs release a record as eagerly awaited as Platinum Rats I wonder if it's worth featuring it on here. You'll have no doubt by now read better reviews of the album by proper writers so what's the point in posting my substandard amateur musings? But as I've mentioned before, this isn't a blog that posts reviews. It's a blog that posts youtube videos of punk songs that I like and shouts "hey punk isn't dead, here's another new song!" Without me at least trying to add a couple of paragraphs of text plus a link or two it'd just be  much smaller version of Youtube (without the kittens or the idiots trying to be famous) so the music is very much the star of the show and the writing is an added extra. Either read it or just skip straight to the song...

If you're still reading, cheers mate! I'll just briefly (pun intended) tell you what the proper reviewers already have, The Briefs are the long running band from Seattle who haven't released anything much for donkeys years but who are back with the fab album Platinum Rats. It's available in the US from Burger Records on cd, cassette and digital (https://burgerrecords.11spot.com/the-briefs-platinum-rats.html). In the UK and Europe you can get it from Damaged Goods (ltd edition coloured vinyl  :   https://damagedgoods.co.uk/discography/the-briefs-platinum-rats/). For more info check Facebook :   https://www.facebook.com/TheBriefs/

It was always fairly predictable that the album would be great (and it is). There's also a new single comprising album track I Hate The World and non album track Lonely Satellite but the song I'm highlighting today is track 5, the one about mutant genes created by human means etc.  Buzz Buzz Buzz.... it's coming for you.  This is GMO Mosquito...

The Briefs - Kids Laugh At You

Bit of a rush job today as I've been stuck in traffic for 2 hours on my way home from work and as I pretty much never decide beforehand what song I'm going to post and therefore have nothing prepared and haven't really got enough time to research an obscure band today I'm posting something you've all probably heard by someone you all probably know but which hopefully you'll all enjoy anyway (I'm sure that opening paragraph deserved some punctuation but sod it, I'm in a rush!).

The Briefs are the Seattle band who play '77 inspired punk rock and who've been very much conspicuous by their absence for the last decade or so. They released some of this millennium's best albums (Hit After Hit, Off The Charts, Sex Objects, Steal Yer Heart) before seemingly going their seperate ways (Chris Brief to Suspect Parts, Daniel J Travanti to Sharp Objects (been waiting far too long for a second album from them!) and Steve E Nix & Stevie Kicks to The Cute Lepers).

You can get more info on them here :  https://www.facebook.com/TheBriefs/

Earlier this month they were over in Europe where amongst other triumphant gigs they graced the Rebellion Festival in Blackpool. To coincide with this flurry of live activity they've released their first new music in over 10 years, a 7" single that's on Taken By Surprise Records and which you can find here :  https://takenbysurpriserecords.bandcamp.com/album/kids-laugh-at-you-b-w-shes-the-rat-7

Despite the length of time between releases, they're still as vital as ever. This is Kids Laugh At You...
