Dirt Royal - Lose Our Way

Forming in 2013, Brighton trio Dirt Royal (https://www.facebook.com/wearedirtroyal/) play an infectiously melodic mix of punk and mod which combines social commentary with a dash of satire. They released their debut album, This Is Now, back in 2014 and I've featured them on here a couple of times including this post from 2018 in which I mentioned their new album, Great Expectations, was on it's way (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/06/dirt-royal-glory-days.html).

Well it's been a while (over 2 years) but finally it's about to see the light of day. It's due out on the 23rd of this month and it'll be available via Time For Action Records on vinyl (200 black/100 yellow) and digital download. It's described thus; "Instantly catchy and addictive buzzsaw UK three-chord-punky PowerPop on exactly 12 cuts. The two vocalists sing with equal measures of punk snottiness and sugary sweetness, including their unique call and response which makes the album to a true gem. But it evokes also the sound and spirit of early The Buzzcocks, The Clash and the Kinks."

I'm lucky enough to have heard it and can confirm if you like your punk rock to be filled with hooks then you'll love it. They might be from Brighton but for some reason they remind me of some of the 60's Mersey Beat bands or maybe a power pop infused version of Pardon Us. They write scuffed up pop songs that get lodged in your brain. You can order it here : https://www.timeforaction.de/shop/dirt-royal/great-expectations/

They've just released a video for one of the tracks. Usually a band will choose the standout song to promote their album and whilst this does a perfectly fine job of demonstrating what you can expect it's by no means "the standout" as everything else on Great Expectations is equally as good.

  It's called Lose Our Way...

Dirt Royal - Glory Days

Brighton band Dirt Royal formed in 2013 and I notice that back then they were describing themselves as a classic British blend of mod and punk, social commentary and social satire. It's a tag that still holds up well today. Many of the bands I feature on this blog would never get looked at twice by mainstream radio (a damning incitement on the state of mainstream radio in 2018 rather than the bands) but Dirt Royal write songs that would be equally at home on both underground scene and more populist outlets.

A year ago, when I featured their excellent Waiting For The Radio single I commented how they were being highly praised by the likes of punk legends Mick Jones and Jimmy Pursey (http://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2017/07/dirt-royal-waiting-for-radio.html). It's a dead cert their latest single will bring them plenty of new fans.

The new single will be out on 7" vinyl on 15th June on Just Lust Records. It's a taster to whet your appetites for upcoming album Great Expectations. The album will be on Time For Action Records (as you may have noticed, not only are the band's releases cool as fuck, so are the names of the labels they come out on!). More details on the album plus tour dates (including "a night of pure energy" at Brighton's Rialto Theatre on Friday 22nd June)  will appear on Facebook so give them a like : https://www.facebook.com/wearedirtroyal/

They've just released a video for the single, as likely to appeal to those of us that were listening to music 40 years ago as it is to wow the new generation, this is one of those songs that should be a smash hit and no doubt back in the day would have been. It's called Glory Days....

Dirt Royal - Waiting For The Radio

Dirt Royal are a trio from Brighton who formed in 2013 and who have a happy knack of writing tunes catchy enough to attract the attention of Radio 6, Rolling Stone Magazine, BBC Introducing and even legendary Clash guitarist Mick Jones who described them as "Brilliant." None other than Jimmy Pursey compares them with The Kinks and I think that's a damn good summing up of their sound which combines elements of punk, new wave and mod and which would have seen them bothering the upper reaches of the chart a couple of decades ago.

They released their debut album, This Is Now, in 2014 on Time For Action Records (Time For Action being another good indication of their sound for those of you that can remember the 1979 Secret Affair classic). They've also had great reviews for the Dr Weekend single. Successful tours around the Uk (including the Rebellion Festival) and overseas (especially in Germany) have built up an impressive fanbase and the band are bound to go from strength to strength with the release of recent single Waiting For The Radio.

The line up of the band is Charlie Russell (vocals/bass), Leon Fenton (vocals/guitar) and Loz Hood (drums). They've been busy touring in support of the single and you can find more details either on Facebook or here :  http://www.dirtroyal.co.uk/

This is Waiting For The Radio.....
