Wonk Unit - Luxury Flats

Well, what can I say about Wonk Unit that I've not previously said in several previous Just Some Punk Songs updates? I suppose I could mention that the band is a vehicle for singer/songwriter Alex to unload. A way to cope with life's ups and downs.

He's been doing quite a lot of unloading over the years with thoughts both political and personal spilling forth via his lyrics. Wonk Unit are now up to album number 9. It's titled Good Good Glad To Hear It and it's available on vinyl and digital download : https://wonk-unit.bandcamp.com/album/good-good-glad-to-hear-it

There's a dozen new songs touching on emotional subjects such his relationship with his young daughter following the breakdown of his marriage, his struggles with addiction and his fears & insecurities.

And then there's this one where he opens a can of arseholes on the subject modern Britain; of Brexit, Nigel Farage and voting Tory (all served with a topping of Sleaford Mods). It's called Luxury Flats...

Wonk Unit (featuring Isaac Holman) - Disco Fever

Only a week left to wait now until the release of the highly anticipated new album by London's finest, Wonk Unit (https://www.facebook.com/wonkunitband). It'll be titled Uncle Daddy and it'll be available next Friday from Plasterer Records (UK), Kidnap Records (Germany) and Rad Girlfriend Records (USA). You can pre order the vinyl version here :  https://wonkunit.com/shop/wonk-unit-uncle-daddy-album-preorder/

We've already been drip fed a few singles so we know it's going to be a very fine album indeed but if you want that little bit more confirmation then here's one last teaser. This time around the band are commenting on lad culture. It's Friday night and the boys are back in town busting out a few moves on the dancefloor. Just don't get in their way.

We also get a guest appearance from Isaac Holman who'll you know from Slaves (https://slavesuk.bandcamp.com/) (and who's now  going solo under the name Baby Dave; debut single here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tUKLqRpivA).

Accompanied by a video in which we're treated to some top notch dance moves, this is Disco Fever...

Wonk Unit - Blood Lust

A new Wonk Unit song is always a cause for joy so let's all celebrate... unless you're a fox hunter in which case go fuck yourself (let's be honest though, no fox hunters are likely to read this blog!).

I'm sure you all know Wonk Unit (https://www.facebook.com/wonkunitband/), the prolific (https://wonk-unit.bandcamp.com/) London band that bring a healthy dose of humour to their working class punk ditties. What you may not know is that they've a new 7" on the way. There's also going to be a new album which will (possibly) be titled White Kayne. If we're lucky, we might get it before the end of 2020, the single will be much sooner and the single's flip side is on Youtube now.

It's a song about fox hunting. A serious subject covered in Wonk's trademark style. First thought is  it has a similar vibe to I Told You So (one of the highlights of 2016 album Mr Splashy), second thought is "damn, what a cool B side, I'm guessing the A side's going to be pretty damn special!"

  This is Blood Lust...

I’m sorry but if your birds are getting eat you shoot that fox You don’t dress up in red and round up the dogs Tip your cap to the toffs, molest the stable jock coz who’s gonna believe him. This is just your sick blood lust I’m sorry that you’re still alive to blow that hooter Coz you deserve the shooter. You’re vile scarlet peedofiles Oblivious to life outside your country house. Don’t even try to justify some country code some country way of life. This is just your sick blood lust Don’t try to dress it up coz this is just your sick blood lust .....

Wonk Unit - Cyclists

Wonk Unit are back with a new song that perfectly encapsulates their off beat take on punk rock. I saw someone (you know who you are!) recently saying they weren't a fan of the band and comparing them to Splodgenessabounds (ie a comedy band that aren't really worth spending much time on). Firstly, Splodge put out a few classics and secondly, not everyone in the punk genre has to be serious. Sometimes it's good to have a different view of the world. I doubt any of Wonk Unit's many fans will mind in the least that they've released a plentiful catalogue of catchy and fun music. They're a great band but I suppose, horses for courses and all that...

Anyway, the new song. It's about selfish people on bikes who ride two abreast and hold up the traffic. It's based on a true story of how Alex Brindle Johnson and his merry band of wonkers were in the van on the way to a festival when they got stuck down a country lane in a procession of traffic that had built up behind two pedalling pricks. Instead of frustration and road rage (or quite possibly born of frustration and road rage), they wrote a song about it. As my friend might complain, "it's not punk..." and maybe strictly speaking, that's the case. But what's punk in 2019 if not a wide umbrella under which people who are punk at heart are free to do what the hell they like?

Wonk Unit. Punk as fuck mate. And fun as well. Honk if you wonk! And if you're a cyclist ride in single file!!!

  This is called Cyclists...

WONK UNIT - Guts (Feat. Duncan Redmonds)

From Croydon, London, Wonk Unit have been producing their own unique brand of punk rock music since 2008 though some of them are veterans of the scene having played in several earlier bands including Steve Lamacq favourites The Flying Medallions . This song, Guts, was the opening track on their 2011 album Trolleys Thank You and features Duncan Redmonds from Snuff.
