Surfbort - Never Nude

  Sunday morning, chilling. Listening to music after completing the playlist for this week's Just Some Punk Songs show (8pm today (UK time) if you wanna come listen  https://www.facebook.com/events/3952757418162862/). 

  An album that's providing me with much pleasure this morning is Keep On Truckin'. It's by Surfbort (https://www.facebook.com/surf666bort) and it's essential listening. It's packed with should be hits. It's commercial enough to pick up mainstream acclaim but cool enough to keep us more discerning types happy too. 

  We've already had the pleasure of a few of the tracks such as FML, White Claw Enema Bong Hit and new single Big Star but by no means are they the only high points. Songs such as Open Your Eyes, Dicks In Space, Youth Group Therapy (just to name a few) are equally infectious. It's an album that's consistent throughout. 

  I've a different song lined up for tonight's show but for the blog, it was a bit of a coin toss. So many great highlights to select from. I'm going with this, it's called Never Nude... 

Surfbort - Silly D

  

  Surfbort (https://www.facebook.com/surf666bort/) make a welcome return to Just Some Punk Songs today with the video for their new single. Despite not being able to gig, they've been keeping as busy as possibly during the pandemic, releasing the Apocalypse Care Package Demos ep (which I covered here : https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2020/05/surfbort-bubble-girl.html) and vocalist Dani Miller has been posting regular Talking With Dani videos which are pretty entertaining. 

  Now there's Silly D. It's a swirling, arty dreamscape that reminds me a little of Sonic Youth or even of the recent music released by The Lovely Eggs.  You can find it here :  https://surfbort.bandcamp.com/track/silly-d

Surfbort - Bubble Girl

  And just as the lockdown begins to bite and boredom is setting in, along come Brooklyn's finest, Surfbort (https://www.facebook.com/surf666bort/) with an Apocalypse Care Package and everything in the world seems just that little bit better.

  There's been loads of new music rush released during this period of isolation and to be honest, it's been of varying quality. There's plenty of good stuff but also quite a bit that sounds either rushed or badly recorded (which with bands stuck at home is unsurprising so I'm not knocking anyone for getting music out to the fans but it will be good to hear better versions one day). When I saw that Surfbort had released an ep of demos I was looking forward to checking it out but wondering if it would live up to their earlier work. The good news is it certainly does. Ben Greenberg and Jonathan Schenke have done a damn fine job recording, mixing and mastering the 5 songs and the band have turned in some of their catchiest tunes yet. It's a case of if it ain't broken don't fix it as we're treated to more of the snotty garage influenced punk they've mastered down the years. Surfbort - You Don't Exist

  One of the most popular bands to feature on the Just Some Punk Songs show during the last year is Brooklyn's Surfbort. Their Friendship Music album was one of the best releases of 2018 so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that there'll be a song from their new ep taking pride of place on today's show (listen to the show at 8pm UK time, details here :   https://www.facebook.com/events/2445735785659571/). The ep is titled You Don't Exist, it features 4 short rambunctious blasts of unrestrained exuberance and although the 10" vinyl appears to have already sold out you can find the digital version here :   https://surfbort.bandcamp.com/album/you-dont-exist

  The band features Dani Miller (vocals), Alex Kilgore (guitar), David Head (guitar) and Sean Powell and their star is very much in the ascendancy at the moment. Not only are they releasing great music and hanging out with mega hot Aussies Amyl And The Sniffers (another band that'll be on today's show) they also recently featured in Gucci's new pre-fall 2019 campaign. Surfbort - Selfie

 

  Surfbort are from Brooklyn, feature Dani Miller (vocals), David Head (guitar), Alex Kilgore (guitar) and Sean Powell (drums) and have just released one of 2018's most interesting and most fun albums.

  They'd already caught people's attention with a number of impressive eps and 7"'s (I remember a song (Hippie Vomit Inhaler) from last year's Bort To Death ep going down a storm when I played it on the show) so news of a debut long player was met with high expectations and I think it's definitely a case of them delivering the goods.   On the subject of gigs, they recently shared a stage with Just Some Punk Songs' favourites Amyl And The Sniffers and if you watch closely when viewing the video at the bottom of this update you'll glimpse an appearence from Amy Taylor.

  So Friendship Music, it's inventive and fresh. Definitely the sort of album that's going to appeal to a wider audience than your typical punk fan. As long as bands are putting out this kind of stuff punk ain't gonna die anytime soon. Just one of many choice cuts, this starts off as a slow burner before transforming into something that'll get the audiences bouncing around. It's called Selfie....
