Their previous album, Stole Your Rock N Roll, was a modern day garage punk classic and I'm happy to say that the new one is equally as impressive. This time around their sound has been bolstered by the addition of Johnny H Bomb on co production duties. We got a taste of what to expect with single Red Eyes Black Kisses (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjMd1BQCOOo) and I'm happy to report the rest of the album is equally incendiary.
After a couple of listens, I'd say this is my early favourite, it's an energetic 3 minute blast of top notch, sleazy punk n roll. It's called She Said...
A couple of years ago I featured a song by Newport 3 piece Deathtraps (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/02/deathtraps-are-we-having-fun.html). If you look in the Collins English Dictionary, under Rock and Roll, it says "Rock and roll is a kind of popular music developed in the 1950s which has a strong beat and is played on electrical instruments." It also says "...Elvis Presley–the King of Rock and Roll. ... Deathtraps-the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world." The online version of the dictionary omits the odd word for brevity's sake but trust me about the full quote being in the hardback edition!
Anyway, as dictionaries are always accurate you'll understand why I was thrilled to be sent their new album a couple of weeks before it's release. It's titled Stole Your Rock n Roll and even if you've not been fortunate enough to have heard the band yet, you'll pretty much know what they sound like. They sound like mutherfuckin' rock n roll. Really, really, bloody good mutherfuckin' rock n roll. One of the highlights on the album is called Joan Jett ("Leather jacket and a Gibson guitar, little Joanie she's my superstar...") and the chorus has singer Veej chanting "she is so rock n roll." On another highlight he bemoans the fact that many of the songs he writes are great but no one cares, they just want to hear the one off the radio. Too Fast To Last reminds me of The Dwarves; Cool Kids has plenty of down and dirty riffing with chants of fuck the cool kids...kill the cool kids; Bad Things is a pedal to the metal exercise in schadenfreude and I was going to say Backstabbing For Beginners is a catchy singalong but to be honest that could describe the whole album. It's out on March 6th and you can pre order it on vinyl or cd here : https://deathtrapstheband.bigcartel.com/
So which song to feature? I'll be playing a few on the show in coming weeks (starting with one on tonight's show so tune in at 8pm gmt https://www.facebook.com/events/143389800083647/) but today I might as well go for the one they've made a video for. It's the album opener, it's called Let's Fall Out Of Love...
Those that checked out yesterday's update (and there were plenty of you due to Bamboo Vipers' frontman Shaun sharing it over 40 times!) would have noticed me mention that Ashley Colman was very impressed with the Deathtraps song I'd played on the show and had snapped up the cd for a bargain £5. I guess it's as good a time as any to feature that song today.....
Deathtraps are a "gutter level garage rock n roll" trio from Newport, Wales, who formed from the ashes of The Sick Livers in 2016 and list amongst their influences the likes of Chuck Norris Experiment, The Damned, Zeke, Motorhead, Johnny Thunders, Hip Priests etc. The sound of their music is raw, rocking and full throttle and the line up features Veej Von Trapp (vocals/guitar), Fraser Von Trapp (bass) and Matty Von Trapp (drums).
Last year they self released their impressive debut album, Justice For The Risca One. You can snap it up "name your price" on Bandcamp (or do as Ashley did and order the cd).
This song has a catchy as hell chorus and features a guest appearance by Adam Jones, it's called Are We Having Fun....
Someone help me find my happy pills I need them just to get me through the day I'm choking on another fantasy I sit and laugh and then I throw it all away
Are we having fun yet, I don't know Are we having fun yet, I don't think so
Canned laughter give me my happy queues So I never ever really have to care Tune me into your reality or leave sitting, shaking, laughing over there
Are we having fun yet, I don't know Are we having fun yet, I don't think so
I get addicted to, the things that you put me through Can I ride the rollercoaster one more time? The things that you say and do the shit that you put me through are we having fun yet? I don't, I don't
Someone help me find my happy pills Someone help me find my happy pills
Are we having fun yet, I don't know Are we having fun yet, I don't think so
I get addicted to,ss the things that you put me through Can I ride the rollercoaster one more time? The things that you say and do the shit that you put me through are we having fun yet? I don't, I don't I don't think so
