Cockwomble - Gammon

  In 1966, Robert F. Kennedy said "We live in interesting times." In 2019, with climate change, the rise of far right extremism, Brexit, Trump & Johnson etc I suppose it's fair to say that we still live in "times of danger and uncertainty." We need bands like Cockwomble to shine a light on current affairs and to attack deserving targets with scathing satire.

  And on their debut Self Titled album they do just that.

  For those that haven't yet discovered them, a quick recap. They're a 3 piece based in Brighton with a line up of Ali Gavan (vocals/guitar), Vicky Smith (of the Ramonas; bass) and Leah Dennison  (drums). They got their distinctive name after hearing ex PM David Cameron described as a Ham Faced Cockwomble and they've previously released 3 very impressive eps.   It's a riot. It deals with serious subjects but often using humour to point out the stupidity of the subject they're writing about. Several of the songs are taken from their previous releases (rerecorded). The remainder are new and match those early faves. They address topics such as conspiracy theories, crappy pop radio stations, the idiocy of taking national pride too far, the complicity of ordinary people, headless chickens buying shit, the Royal Family, having loads of money but no style. Not only is it observationally spot on, it's also very catchy. You can sing along whilst simultaneously grinning and seething inside. There's plenty of new UK bands proving that punk didn't die in the early 80's and Cockwomble are one of the best.

  This song is about middle aged, angry men with (no doubt) names like Nigel, Piers, Jeremy, Boris etc. It's called Gammon....

Cockwomble - Conspiracy

  Brighton band Cockwomble are preparing to release their 3rd ep (their first 2 were great and featured here : https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/07/cockwomble-henchmen.html and here : https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/10/cockwomble-want-stuff-buy-stuff.html). It'll be available on cd and digital download on the 5th April and the title track is highlighted today.   Alongside Vicky Smith (who you may also know from her other band The Ramonas) Cockwomble also feature Ali Gavan (vocals/guitar) and Leah Dennison (drums). Combining anger and humour they shine a light on modern day society. Their songs are catchy but take no prisoners, razor sharp and biting.   They claim their music is for fans of Idles, Ramones, Undertones, Adverts, McClusky, Supergrass, Beastie Boys, Peter, Paul & Mary and Husker Du. An eclectic bunch indeed! The ep features 4 songs (all winners); Goebbels & Orwell is about how there's a fight coming and everyone's going to have to choose a side (community can triumph over hate). It's OK To Punch A Nazi is self explanatory (if it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, goosesteps like a duck then punch it you're in luck...). Joey Ramone was written as the band hate U2's song about the great man so much they thought they better write a decent one (yep, they've definitely written a decent one!). 

  And then there's the title track. It's about how dumbass conspiracy theories distract from life's real villains "It's not aliens mate, and it's definitely not the Jews."  As I mentioned earlier, anger and humour (plus clever lyrics and great riffs). A killer ep.

Cockwomble - Want Stuff Buy Stuff

 

  Brighton post punk trio Cockwomble (the band that feature Ramonas bassist Vicky Smith) will this month release their 2nd ep (their debut having featured here back in July :  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/07/cockwomble-henchmen.html).

  I played the title track, All Of The Money! None Of The Style! on a recent Just Some Punk Songs show and a combination of Stella Artois and trying to keep on top of the chatroom chat fogs my recollection a little but I remember it getting praised for the vocals. The song is about the entitled imbeciles currently running the UK. Track 2 (the one you'll find below) is about rampant consumerism, Henry XXXXXV (I think there's a video for this track due soon) is about our ridiculous inbred royal family and closing track Punk In A Dress is about how you don't need to dress in a certain way to be a punk. As you can tell, the band are opinionated, they also have a sense of humour and the happy knack of writing catchy tunes.

Cockwomble - Henchmen

 

  New band, great name, topical song. Cockwomble are a post punk trio from Brighton featuring a line up of Ali Gavan (vocals/guitar), Vicky Smith (bass) and Leah Dennison (drums). Those that have been paying attention may have seen Vicky featured on here before with her other band, The Ramonas. Supposedly, Ali and Vicky asked Leah to join them after seeing a picture of her bum on the internet and they chose their magnificent name after seeing former pig bothering pm David Cameron described as a ham faced cockwomble.

  A great name is all well and good but it's nothing if you can't back it up with your music. I think it's safe to say that this is going to be a band that will be fine on that score. They say their music should appeal to those amongst you who are fans of the likes of IDLES, Ramones, Undertones, Adverts, McClusky, Peter Paul & Mary and Husker Du.

  Rumbling basslines and snappy, intelligent lyrics are very much the order of the day. "If you work for Captain Hook mate, you're basically a pirate."  I was only following orders has never quite cut it. This is Henchmen....
