Ghoulies - Petey Jones' Locker

I think it's fair to say that Ghoulies were one of the more obscure bands to appear in the Just Some Punk Songs Best Of 2020 chart (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2020/12/just-some-punk-songs-top-50-songs-of.html) with this beauty :  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2020/03/ghoulies-unpack-your-bags.html).

They're from Perth and feature members of Aborted Tortoise and Kitchen People (full line up : Indigo Foster Tuke (synth/vocals), Alec Thomas (bass/vocals/guitar), Charles Wickham vocals/guitar) & Alex Patching drums/vocals)) and happily they've recently released a sophomore ep which impresses as much as debut Flat Earth did.

It's titled Reprogram and once again we're treated to some rather brief and extremely fun cuts of egg punk. 7 tracks in under 10 minutes that'll have you bouncing around with a smile on your face. I've just noticed they've a rescheduled gig lined up to launch the 7" on Saturday 12th June at Clancys Fishpub in Fremantle alongside the awesome Cold Meat and Church Group (who I'm going to check out after I finish typing this).

The 7" is on Goodbye Boozy Records and it's rather limited so get those pre orders in quickly. You can also download it name your price : https://ghouliesperth.bandcamp.com/album/reprogram

Strap yourself in, this is synth punk at it's frantic best. It's called Petey Jones' Locker...

The Courettes - Hop The Twig

The Courettes (https://www.facebook.com/courettes) are husband and wife duo Flavia (vocals/guitar) and Martin (drums/vocals) Couri. Flavia's from Brazil, Martin's from Denmark and between them they serve up some of the best 60's inspired garage rock you'll hear. If anyone's unfamiliar with them then head over to Bandcamp and indulge yourselves... https://thecourettes.bandcamp.com/

Tomorrow sees the release of their classy new single which adds plenty of twangy surf to their signature garage style. Think Dick Dale and Duane Eddy, think The Cramps and Kate & Cindy from The B-52's. It's a great teaser for their upcoming album Back In Mono. It'll be released on 7" by Damaged Goods https://damagedgoods.co.uk/discography/the-courettes-hope-the-twig/

A Slang term for dying in the 19th century, this is Hop The Twig...

Ruler - Action

Japanese garage punk heroes Ruler (https://www.facebook.com/Rulertheband) are back with a new single, their 3rd following a couple of winners which both also featured on here ( https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/04/ruler-gimme-some-noise.htmlhttps://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/09/ruler-jeanie-jeanie-jeanie.html).

This time around Otoya (Vocals, Harmonica) Fink (Guitar) & Azu (Bass) have teamed up with Kannana Speedcats drummer Combat who takes over on vocals for a punked up version of The Loco-Motion. Written by Gerry Goffin & Carole King and originally a 1962 hit for Little Eva (and later covered by the likes of Grand Funk Railroad and Kylie Minogue), it's never sounded better.

The song I'm highlighting today though is the flip side which boasts an impressive bit of harmonica work by Otoya which really makes the song.

It's released as a limited edition 7" to coincide with a limited edition cassette tape that was a Japan only release. Only a very small amount of these will be available in the US and Europe. You can get it from Secret Mission Records : https://secretmissionrecords.bandcamp.com/album/loco-motion

LEDZEPVIETCONG - All Liquored Up

Some of you may remember me mentioning the fabulously named LEDZEPVIETCONG when I posted a song in March by fellow Japanese punks Born Shit Stirrers (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2021/03/born-shit-stirrers-richard-gere.html). That song comes from a split 7" between them titled Overworked Underfucked. Today you're getting one of the LEDZEPVIETCONG tracks.

If you're unfamiliar with the band, they're based in Kumamoto and feature a line up of Jay Onyskin (The Lizards, Sea Pig, Horny Mormans) (guitar/vocals), Sawae (bass) and Boss (drums). You can check out their previous releases here : https://onionskin.bandcamp.com/music

The 7" will be out on Serial Bowl Records (https://serialbowlrecords.bandcamp.com/) in July, LEDZEPVIETCONG contribute 4 tracks including this one which reminds me very much of someone else that I can't quite put my finger on (the press release mentions early Beck and Daniel Johnson but that isn't it). I even checked if it was a cover version as it's one of those songs that sound instantly familiar but it doesn't appear to be. Maybe it's The Replacements I'm thinking of at their wistful best. It's called All Liquored Up...

The Boatsmen - When I'm Drunk

I remember, many moons ago, watching Norwegian rock gods Turbonegro going down a storm in a market hall in Morecambe in front of an appreciative crowd of sweaty punks. They were a band that rocked hard and partied even harder with their music appealing to a wide audience. Hailing from Örebro, Sweden, The Boatsmen (https://www.facebook.com/theboatsmen) are very much a similar proposition.

Featuring a line up of Håkan Ficks, Martin Ficks, Jacob Martinsson & Johan Söderberg they've just released their 4th studio album. Boasting a sound which they describe as "Ramones, MC5 and The Beach Boys in an exciting drunken fisticuff" they're one of a number of bands that are mixing and matching the best elements of rock n roll, punk and garage rock and somehow, all of these bands are managing to put out killer releases. The new album is titled Versus The Boatsmen and it's the perfect soundtrack to get fucked up to.

Listening to the album you wonder why pretty much every popular radio station in 2021 plays only insipid, over produced pap. It's all anodyne and coma inducing. The kids need introducing to proper music. Life affirming, feel good rock n roll played with passion by people with fire coursing through their veins. Versus The Boatsmen is a thrill ride and is essential listening. It's out now on Ghost Highway Recordings (Europe) and Spaghetty Town Records (USA). You can listen here :  https://theboatsmen.bandcamp.com/album/versus-the-boatsmen-2

Highlights are plenty so I was spoilt for choice for a song to feature below. Really impressed with Friday Night Forever which is like a lost Black Flag classic whilst Big Waves has an impressively melodic chorus to counterpoint some hard riffing. I'm going with one that they released a cool video for, this is When I'm Drunk...

The Senton Bombs - Another Way

The Senton Bombs (https://www.facebook.com/thesentonbombs) are from Blackpool and they formed in 2004. They line up with Joey Class (bass/vocals), Johnny Gibbons (guitar/backing vocals), Damien Kage (guitar/backing vocals) and Scott Mason (drums). They play "punk infected rock n roll" and are influenced by the likes of The Clash, Guns N Roses, Megadeath, Supersuckers, Rancid etc. They recently released their 6th studio album, it's titled Aerial Threat.

Boasting 14 tracks, it was released on March 27th on Regolith Records. and you can get it on cd here :  https://sentonbombs.com/store

The riffs are many, the musicianship tightly honed and the choruses offer crowds plenty of opportunity to sing along when their energetic live shows get going again. All but 2 of the tracks go past the 3 minute mark but your attention span never wanes, a sure sign that the album is all killer no filler.

The song I'm highlighting will also feature on a Just Some Punk Songs special themed show later today which showcases English bands. You can listen at 8pm (UK time), details here :  https://www.facebook.com/events/294333472247394/

DARTZ - Rollyz Quit His Job

  "FUCK THAT RACIST BOSS..."

DARTZ (https://www.facebook.com/smokedartz/) are Crispy, Rollyz, Clark Mathews and Danz. They're a bundle of party punk fun from Wellington, New Zealand and they've been around for a couple of years or so though I only came across them earlier this week.

I notice that they played a few gigs early on with Aussie heroes Chats and the song I'm featuring below straight away had me thinking of the Sunshine Coast trio's smash Smoko. It's a blast. A true account of drummer Rollyz discovering his boss was a piece of shit and walking out of his job. It's the lead track on new ep Quit Before It's Too Late and it's a breath of fresh air. Also on the ep are the shouty Fuck Marry Kill and one that's sure to get fans chanting along, You Can't Beat Wellington On A Good Day.

It's available on cassette (their first physical release) along with 3 older tracks and as a digital download. They're a band I look forward to hearing more from, check them out here :  https://smokedartz.bandcamp.com/album/quit-before-it-is-too-late

A cool video and a youthfully exuberant song. This is Rollyz Quit His Job...

Before They Are Hanged - These Times Alone

Derbyshire punks Before They Are Hanged (https://www.facebook.com/beforetheyarehanged/) are no strangers to Just Some Punk Songs. I think I've featured most of the songs that make up their new ep as they've been drip fed to us over the last couple of years or so.

Titled These Times alone, the ep comes in two cd versions. There's the Blue version which is limited to 50 copies and features the tracks These Times Alone, Story Of My Life, Ground Down, Nowhere Without You (previously unreleased) and D.I.Y. You can get it here :  https://beforetheyarehanged.bandcamp.com/album/these-times-alone-ep

Secondly is the Orange version which features the same tracks plus another previously unreleased one called Where's Roy and it comes with free badges. You can get it from hangedmusic18 :  https://hangedmusic18.bandcamp.com/album/these-times-alone

It's released on 1st May (Blue) and 8th May (Orange) but they're selling quick on pre order so if you want one, don't hang around.

I've mentioned previously that they were planning a full length album titled Welcome To England but I suppose with the pandemic scuppering many a plan the ep is a very nice little stopgap to keep us going. It's melodic punk at it's best and will have you singing along. I've asked about the album and am happy to report that now restrictions are easing they hope to start work on it next month. It looks like it'll contain between 15-20 tracks so plenty to look forward to.

A song on the subject of mental health issues, this is These Times Alone...

The Officials - Work

I'd rather not work, but I need money to get by
Gonna work work work work work work work work, work until the day we die

 Unfortunately, this is true :(

This is probably going to be one of those updates which has a few people commenting, "Why does the heading say The Officials - Work and not The Officials - Sleepwalking?"

Which is a fair question as the new ep by The Officials is titled Sleepwalking and if I was reviewing the ep then it would be headed The Officials - Sleepwalking

But as I often tell people, I don't do reviews. I just post a song that I like and say a few words to introduce it. I'll admit that by the time I've finished and added a link or two it might look like a review but it isn't. Honest. It's a recommendation.

And today I'm recommending you check out the new ep by anarchoi duo The Officials (https://www.facebook.com/TheOfficialsAnarchoi). The line up is Nath Haywire (from Southampton) who does the angry shouting (you may recognise his dulcet tones from Haywire, Armoured Flu Unit,  Distance and others) and John Copeland (from Vancouver, Washington) who plays guitar, bass and drums.

If this was a proper review I'd tell you that the title track kicks things off in style by telling us we're sleepwalking into a nightmare and that by the time we wake up, it'll be too late. We're not doing anywhere near enough to try and slow down climate change, we're resigned to our fate. WAKE UP!

The song I'm posting below is like the Pistols in Doc Martens and braces. It's rather catchy and will stick in your head. Next up is Scary Situation which has a D-Beat rhythm and barrels along with plenty of oomph. Lycanthropy (originally by GBH on their Leather, Bristles, Studs and Acne album) brings proceedings to a satisfying conclusion and even borrows a famous quote from a Lon Chaney Jr classic for it's chorus; "Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright."

4 tracks, all very good and it may well get a vinyl release ("We are probably going to do a vinyl run of 100 copies, if we get enough requests for it."). For now though, you can get it from Bandcamp :  https://theofficials.bandcamp.com/album/sleepwalking

This is the song in the heading. It's called Work...

Burning Flag - Broken Britain

It's been 4 years since I last featured Halifax crust punks Burning Flag (https://www.facebook.com/burningflagpunk) on here (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2017/08/burning-flag-this-town.html) and since then they've had the difficult task of finding a new vocalist following the departure of MD. Happily, with Holly Searle (ex Kiss Me Killer), the transition has been seamless. The remainder of the line up remains the same and sees Jonesy (Guitar), Mark Midgley (Bass) & Matt Fortune (Drums) continuing to provide a powerful and atmospheric backbeat.

There's been several well written reviews popping up online telling you how good the new album is so all I need to do is echo those views and tell you that Matador is a really impressive metal tinged behemoth combining anarcho punk with hardcore noise. Subjects covered include macho aggression, the right to choose, the destruction of Mother Earth, right wing cops etc...

You can pre order the cd or download the digital album here :   https://burningflag.bandcamp.com/album/matador

The vinyl version will be released by Phobia Records (date to be confirmed)

I've already played Eat The Rich and Step Back on the show so today I'll highlight a song that shines a light on the state of the nation. It's called Broken Britain...

What, democracy, do we live in?
When voting for a broken Britain What, future, do we face? When voices can be swayed by hate Don’t think they’ll ever change Funded by the upper classes Only way to make a wave, is to riot in our masses Resist, organise, revolt (Welcome to a broken Britain) Reject, liberate, exalt (Welcome to a broken Britain) How, complicit can you get? With a vote to kill the NHS How, many lies are unseen? Do as were told, what to believe Don’t think they’ll ever change Funded by the upper classes Only way to make a wave is to riot in our masses Resist, organise, revolt (Welcome to a broken Britain) Reject, liberate, exalt (Welcome to a broken Britain) What? Future, do we face? When we’re swayed by hate

Pink Suits - My Old Man's A Dustman

(photo : Kathryn Betts)

Sometimes you just want to listen to something fun. Shouty, sweary fun. And that's what I've been doing the last few days courtesy of Pink Suits (https://www.facebook.com/pinksuitsband).

They're a "Queer Feminist Punk Rock & Rage" duo based in Margate who formed in 2017 who've just released a rather amazing debut album titled Political Child. There's a much better review than this over on Louder Than War that throws comparisons around to the likes of White Stripes, Crass and Chumbawamba and I have to say that their eye catching video for Fake Great Britain  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf035k1myxo) did remind me of Danbert Nobacon and Alice Nutter stomping around. I also get a Victorian music hall vibe (the duo are well versed in dance and physical theatre). Maybe a more contemporary comparison would be Cockwomble meets Cold Meat. The message is serious but the delivery is often vaudeville.

Highlights are plenty and include Anarchist Wisdom which had me shouting along and Decades Back ("They’ll fuck the queers fuck the poor they’ll fuck the foreign ones even more drop the bombs even the score when money is power, all they want is more"). The title track begins "Your time is up mother fuckers... and tells those in authority "we're coming for you and we're gunning for change you’re gonna hear our noise you’re gonna feel our rage."

The track I'm highlighting is the first on the album and it's a little more restrained than many of the other tracks but the lyrics strike a chord. It's called My Old Man's A Dustman...

My mum asked me recently do you ever just switch off but there’s palm oil in everything and I’ve got a chronic cough there's warnings in the paper not to breathe the fucking air and white supremacist terrorists won’t be stopped with thoughts and prayers The rich won't pay their taxes but the poor get sent to jail and the rest of us pick up the slack when the bank’s too big to fail There’s children kept in cages their abusers all walk free everyone just turns their head it’s not effecting me the NHS is failing at the hands of tory scum I weep for failed America it’s a sign of what’s to come if you wanna have a baby still then contemplate it’s worth $10 000 each at least to overpopulate this earth the planets fucking burning and those with sway don’t care it’s up to us to foot the bill now that’s not very fair the media’s not mediating Murdoch’s made his bed just suppress the voters now democracy is dead Black lives fucking matter Now watch how you respond Neutrality is violence You’ve been silent for too long Our Trans brothers and sisters Need our voices in the fight You feel attacked because you’re wrong It’s not because you’re white The times they keep on changing And you try to block the way This fighting for equality Is every single day We are all responsible This world is fucking ours It’s time to strip authority From all abusive powers The queen is just for tourists So let’s sell her fucking crown our rents are on the rise again and the pound’s way fucking down The numbers just keep going up on people sleeping rough But theyre defined poverty and claimed they’d done enough so we’re eating out of food banks and working till were dead it’s getting harder to resist I can’t get out of bed My old man’s a dustman He’ll work until he’s dead He’ll grind his bones into the ground to make his daily bread

Gloo - Big Smoke

Gloo are a trio from the English seaside resort of Littlehampton that play grungy punk rock but also incorporate just enough of a modern day indie sheen that it gets them noticed by the likes of the Radio 1 Rock Show and 6 Music. I doubt they need showcasing on little old punk blogs but they've had the knack over the last 5 years of putting out some pretty cool tunes and I'm sure there's plenty of you that will welcome the introduction so here goes...

Featuring a line up of brothers Thomas Harfield (guitar/vox) & Mark Harfield (drums/vox) plus Simon Keet (bass), they released their debut single, Let Me Have Some, in 2016. They followed it 3 years later with an album titled A Pathetic Youth and there's also been a further 3 singles, the latest of which you'll find below. They write about life issues; relationships, feeling unfulfilled, needing to get away from it all, growing older... The guitars are distorted, the vocals often shouty. They make me think of Nirvana battling it out with The Wildhearts but with enough of a scrappy edge to keep it enjoyable.

You can get their music here ; https://gloo.bandcamp.com/

This is the new single, it's called Big Smoke...

I wanna move to the Big Smoke
Drink beer and snort coke
I don't care if it makes me broke
Move to the Big Smoke!

I wanna live in the countryside
Buy a house and find a wife
I don't care if it ruins my life
Live in the countryside

Big Smoke (in the Big Smoke)
Big Smoke (in the Big Smoke)
Big Smoke oh yeah
In the Big Smoke

I wanna be beside the seaside
Sipping wine and biding my time
I don't care if it's not my vibe
Be by the seaside

I wanna live like a rock star
Fast women and faster cars
I don't care if i don't get far
Live like a rock star

Big Smoke (in the Big Smoke)
Big Smoke (in the Big Smoke)
Big Smoke oh yeah
In the Big Smoke

Lousy Sue - Ferma Jean

The album I've been listening to most this week is a 15 track garage punk ripper by Indianapolis 3 piece Lousy Sue (https://www.facebook.com/lousysue). The line up of the band is Jim (guitar), Jason (bass) & Angie (drums) and the album is called Artless Artifacts.

You may be familiar with guitarist Jim Kuczkowski, he's been in many a studio recording or mixing albums by the likes of The Infections, The Problematics, The Wongs, Zodiac Killers, The Marked Men etc. All that experience is on show with Artless Artifacts as not only is it catchy as hell, it sounds great too. Raw and exciting with joint male and female vocals it's a must have :  https://lousysue.bandcamp.com/album/artless-artifacts

I played Day Drinkin' on last week's Just Some Punk Songs and I'll be playing their Buck Biloxi cover on this week's show later today (https://www.facebook.com/events/521968548957740/). The song I'm highlighting below though is about a wild and obnoxious disaster called Ferma Jean...

OC Rippers - Heart To Heart (Guest Review By Ralph J Rivera)

Another one of Ralph's enthusiastic recommendations today. As he admits, this time around he's biased as he's known the members of the band for decades but I've listened to the album to make sure he's not just palming us off with any old crap and I can confirm he's spot on. It's great...

Okay so this is actually my first ever biased review. I've known the guys in this band for DECADES. Can't even tell you how many times I've seen their guitar player Johny's old band "Dead Heroes" back in the the day. Their singer went on to front one of the biggest bands in Punk Rock but that's Jersey History.

Now speaking of that let me introduce to you THE best band that's come out of the Jersey Shore since "Night Birds". OC Rippers have a pedigree that runs a mile long... As long as the influences they've all absorbed. They just dropped their statement to the World called "Wasteland Blues" and you all need to listen up!

After dropping two amazing demos and a teaser EP this is the culmination of YEARS of experience. This band can do the slow burn jams ("Brats" & "Feed Me") along with the balls out rockers ("Born In Waco" & "Just Gotta Run"). I know we all LOVE comparisons so let me give you this - If you were to take the best elements of the MC5 and combined that with the total recklessness of the Candy Snatchers you would have this beast of a band! Do yourself a favour if you LOVE Rock & Roll as much as OC Rippers and I do - Hit that Bandcamp link and prepared to hear REAL 2021 MUSIC!

My choice for best song off this masterpiece is "Heart To Heart". A TRUE NJ statement!

The Stinkeyes - Junk Male

If you're one of the lovely people who listen to the Just Some Punk Songs show when it first airs on a Sunday evening at 8pm (UK Time) on the Global Punk Network                                     (https://mixlr.com/global-punk-radio/) you may have noticed that there's now another show that immediately follows it (at 9pm). It's hosted by Jason Tattum, called Oh No! Not Garage and Hardcore Punk! and it's very good. Jason mines the same seam that I do but rarely unearths the same nuggets. You can check out past shows here :  https://www.mixcloud.com/jason-tattum/

Now the reason I mention Jason's show is that I was listening to the latest one and amongst the tracks I most enjoyed, one in particular stood out and it's that which I'm posting today...

The Stinkeyes are a 3 piece from Wisconsin with a line up of Emily Kapellusch (Bass and Vocals), Haley Teniente (Drums) & Jordan Kapellusch (Guitar and Backing Vocals). They've just released a (debut?) ep titled Inside joke and it's a fun listen. Subjects include self criticism, sex pests and 'comfort' food. You can get it here : https://thestinkeyes.bandcamp.com/album/inside-joke

This is the "hit" it's called Junk Male...

I opened up some junk mail, Just another dick pic Completely unsolicited (I'm really getting sick of it) You're just another junk male No one’s falling for your subject line You think you're something special But we know all about your kind So log off Leave us alone Do you talk to your mom like that with your phone? I hope this message is direct We deserve respect Stop sending us your junk, male Tried to ignore this junk male, Don't know what's so hard-to-get When we unsubscribe from junk male It means we just aren't into it You're just another junk male No one’s jazzed about your tactics To you it's just flirtation But really it's harassment So piss off Project your shame Do you think we care when you call us names? Let's have a long group chat Would you consent to that? Stop sending us your junk, male I deleted all the junk mail It was time to take out the trash Deleting all your junk male Can cost you half your contacts

Das Kapitans - Sniperwife

Hopefully I'm not the only one who has fond memories of 1992 when The Wedding Present released a new single every month (and if memory serves, just about managed to get them all in the chart). An impressive feat but one which looks a doddle compared with Das Kapitans' (https://www.facebook.com/daskapitans) intention to release an album every month throughout 2021.

Back in 2019, there was a band from the Peterborough area called Fuzz And The Felts (https://fuzzandthefelts.bandcamp.com/) who came to a (temporary) halt once Covid shut things down. Two members of that band though, Stephen Potter & Simon Bailey, weren't about to let a killer pandemic stifle their creativity and Das Kapitans were born.

We're now in April so that means we're 4 albums into the duo's mammoth undertaking (Joulukuu / #2 / Blah, Blah, Blah / Songs) and happily they're keeping the bar high. Their sound is a mix up of post punk, garage, lo-fi, punk and indie so they don't risk boring us by releasing the same song over and over again. Songs kicks off with Crank and leaves me thinking "this sounds a bit like Idles." The rest of the songs on Songs also have one word titles, all 16 are fairly brief, pretty lively and very good. I recommend you spend that spare couple of quid you've got and go get it :  https://daskapitansband.bandcamp.com/album/songs

I could have pretty much highlighted anything off the album but I've gone with one that reminds me of early Wire. It's called Sniperwife....

Duncan Reid and the Big Heads - First time (Live at Akkurat)

Something of a classic for you today...

Hopefully you all know Duncan Reid, he was determined to make it as a footballer until he reached the age of 13 and discovered an old bass guitar in his dad's cupboard. A sliding door moment that changed his life and enriched ours. In 1976 he joined up with (ex London SS singer/guitarist) Matt Dangerfield, (ex Hollywood Brats keyboard player) Casino Steel, (guitarist) Honest John Plain and (drummer) Jack Black to form one of the eras best power pop/pop punk bands. They were of course The Boys.

After 35 years (on and off) he left the band during a tour of Japan and after releasing a solo album (Little Big Head) started using the name Duncan Reid And The Big Heads (https://www.facebook.com/groups/182913282466616) and continued putting out catchy as hell songs (this being one of his best : https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2020/05/duncan-reid-and-big-heads-to-live-or.html).

On April 23rd they'll be releasing a rather tasty live album. Recorded on 20 May 2018 at Restaurang Akkurat, Stockholm, by Jonathan Sandberg it'll serve as a reminder of what we've been missing during the last year in lockdown. Titled Live At Akkurat it's up for pre order here :  https://duncanreidandthebigheads.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-akkurat

The line up for the gig was Duncan Reid (Lead Vocals/Bass/Keys), Sophie Powers (Guitar/BVs/Keys), Nick Hughes (Guitar/BVs) & Karen Jones (Drums). On the evidence of the teaser track posted on Bandcamp and the video you'll find below, it's going to be just that little bit special so make sure you check it out.

Originally featuring on the 1977 debut album, The Boys and also released as a chart bothering single, this is the song that brings Live At Akkurat to a joyful climax (pretty apt given that it's about losing ones virginity!). It's called First Time...

Bug Central - The Fires Began

Bug Central are a 3 piece anarcho punk band from London who formed in 1996. They've just released a new 8 track 10" on Grow Your Own Records titled And The Fires Begin. It's just one of a trio of impressive new releases by the label (the others being a vinyl version of Pedagree Skum's 2013 Nightmares And Screams album and a repressing of The System's Dogs Of War ep) and you can get it on vinyl and cd here : https://anthraxuk.bandcamp.com/album/and-the-fires-began

It's a typical Grow Your Own Release, quality protest music covering subjects such as imperialism, part time veganism, economical war, Antifa etc etc etc.... I don't usually mention artwork but I will this time around, it's very striking. Horrifying but at the same time a thing of beauty.

This is the title track, it's called The Fires Began...

Your top politician is a rich politician So feel to relax, you’ve just been taxed We’re dying to live but life is a game And there’s no last name it’s a loaded game I looked in your eyes And they were as black as my heart I should’ve realised then This is not a good start And then the fires began And the government sang “We can do as we please” And the rich all agreed Stick figures on a suicide note From the privileged few With their hands on your throat Violent technology is your philosophy Warmonger, poor maker Not in my name I looked in your eyes And they were as black as my heart I should’ve realised then That we’re dead from the start Then the fires began And the government sang “We can do as we please” And the rich all agreed It’s economical war!

Ravagers - Down That Road

Ravagers (https://www.facebook.com/ravagersgang) are a street rock n roll band from the wastelands of Baltimore. I've played them on the show before but don't think I've had them on here so I'll rectify that today.

They've a new album on the way, it'll be titled Badlands and it's going to be out in September on Spaghetty Town Records (https://spaghettytownrecords.bigcartel.com/). They released a track from it last year called Nasty Night which was an anthemic ripper suggesting the album would be pretty damn special. Those high hopes have been raised even higher with the release of single number 2.

Accompanied with a recommendation to turn the volume up loud, it's a catchy rock n roll singalong that'll lodge itself firmly inside your brain. Think Animal Boy era Ramones crossed with Dead Boys and you won't be a million miles away. You can get both singles here :  https://ravagers.bandcamp.com/track/down-that-road

  Down That Road...

LISASINSON - Corazón

Most of the Spanish bands I've either posted on here recently or played on the show have seen me making comparisons with Accidente (Madrid's finest who you'll already be familiar with but just in case anyone's been living under a rock for the last few years... https://accidente.bandcamp.com/). The band I'm featuring today are a little lighter in tone, the pop sensibilities shine through a touch more but I'm still sticking them in the same ballpark. It's catchy punk music with Spanish lyrics sung by a very talented female vocalists.

Lisasinson (https://www.facebook.com/lisasinsonm) is a graphic and musical project that started in November 2018 at the Fine Arts campus in Valencia, with Miriam (vocals and guitar), Mar (vocals and guitar), María (drums and backing vocals) and Paula (bass and backing vocals).  They've just released a new mini album titled Perdona Mamá. 9 infectious tracks of "youthfulness, spontaneity, rebelliousness and overflowing energy." It's out on Elefant Records (which gives me an excuse to compare it to the joyful exuberance of one of my favourite releases by that label  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2014/03/juniper-moon-volveras.html).

It's available as a 10" Mini-LP (Ultra Transparent Vinyl Numbered Limited Edition of 500 copies) and digital download : https://lisasinson.bandcamp.com/album/perdona-mam

  This track is titled Corazón...

No te reconozco cuando me miras así
Toda esta tristeza no me deja vivir
No sé cómo no te vi venir
Con esa cara de maniquí
Agujeros negros, quiero que te vayas de aquí

Porque casualmente he vuelto a verte por ahí
No pienso saludarte no te voy a sonreír

Cockbox - Destroy Capitalism Before It Destroys You

Cockbox (https://www.facebook.com/CockboxTheBand) are a 3 piece from Helsinki featuring a line up of Vee (lead vocals/guitar/percussions), Razze (backing vocals/bass) & Henri (drums). They formed in 2015, debuting with a 2019 single which paired covers of I Don't Adore The USA (Pelle Miljoona & N.U.S) and Last Rockers (Vice Squad).

They followed it in September of last year with an album titled Wake Up The Punk Rock Dead. 10 tracks on subjects such as Donald Trump, the objectifying of women, the overuse of plastic and they round things off with a Siouxsie And The Banshees cover. It's impressive fare and you should check it out.

The same goes for the ep September 2020 Morgue Sessions. This time around we get a take down of the dangerous president of Brazil (``Jair Bolsonaro spreads corona!´´ How much longer will this shit for brains, Trump's lap dog, capitalist rule Brazil ? His poor leadership qualitys can be compared to Trump... It is also mainly his fault that Covid has gone out of hand a long long time ago. So many new graves everyday... Down with Bolsonaro!! Throw his body to the anaconda!"). Another highlight is the song you'll find below which rails against the putting of profit before people and nature. I've already mentioned Siouxsie And The Banshees and Vice Squad and the band's sound is somewhat of an amalgamation of those two legendary acts (late 70's/early 80's inspired punk with an occasional hint of atmospheric goth).

You can get the ep name your price here : https://cockbox.bandcamp.com/album/september-2020-morgue-sessions

This is Destroy Capitalism Before It Destroys You...

The world is coming to an end Because capitalism doesn't work Profit goes always before Nature, people and animals Why to save the people when I could make some money Destroy capitalism Before it destroys you Why should we have free healthcare Economy goes before human lives Solidarity is just a word Greedyness sounds better Fuck the human rights Money is all that counts

Skinny Genes - Firing Squad

Another excellent compilation album track for you today, if this doesn't perk your day up then you're beyond help!

The compilation is titled 44 Golden Greats! It's been put together by Worst Idea Records and it features (unsurprisingly) 44 tracks from the likes of The Raging Nathans, Hospital Job, Grim Deeds, The Ergs, Rockie Rochelle, Rev Norb, The Nerdy Jugheads etc etc etc... It's a tribute to Mutant Pop Records thus all the songs are covers. Bands covered include, amongst others, Boris The Sprinkler, After School Special, Dillinger Four, Sicko, Dirt Bike Annie and The Automatics (which is where the title of the comp comes from). All proceeds go to Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs  https://www.kasap.org/

You can get it here : https://worstidea.bandcamp.com/album/44-golden-greats (LIMITED-EDITION PHYSICAL RELEASE COMING VERY SOON!)

The song that jumped out at me and which I'm highlighting today is by Skinny Genes. A new band to me, they're the solo project of Azeem Sajid from The Steinways and House Boat. You can hear more from them here : https://skinnygenes.bandcamp.com/

The song they've made such a good job of covering was originally by Moral Crux and was on the Victim Of Hype ep (Mutant Pop 12). It freshens up the original, adds a sprinkling of The Ramones' classic She's The One and is truly wonderful. It's called Firing Squad...

Emily Flea - Park Bench Creep

Emily Condon was the vocalist with punk 3 piece The Fleas (https://thefleas1.bandcamp.com/) who I featured on here a couple of times a few years back   https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2016/08/the-fleas-heart-breaker.html   https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/12/the-fleas-phone-call.html. They were a good band and released a very enjoyable album on Grow Your Own Records titled A Flea In Your Ear   https://anthraxuk.bandcamp.com/album/the-fleas-a-flea-in-your-ear

More recently she's been going by the name Emily Flea (https://www.facebook.com/thefleas1) and broadcasting weekly livestreams.

She's back on here again today with a track that's one of the highlights of an impressive new compilation album titled Girls Are Loud Volume 2 which has been compiled by Punk 4 The Homeless. It boasts 22 songs by female fronted recording artists in solidarity with the girls at Hope Orphanage, Sierra Leone... all proceeds go to Hope Orphanage.

It's available on cd and as a digital download : https://punk4thehomeless.bandcamp.com/album/girls-are-loud-volume-2

Emily's contribution sees her taking aim at lecherous guys who deserve "a fucking punch." It's called Park Bench Creep...

The Missile Studs - Sooo Useless

More cool new Aussie punk for you today courtesy of  Adelaide upstarts The Missile Studs (https://stampoutdisco.bandcamp.com/album/with-love-from-the-missile-studs).

They're "4 pieces of human trash making noise." They play "stupid music for stupid people" and they're a whole bunch of immature, dumb fun. Check out their Facebook page and you'll discover they boast an all star celebrity line up (or maybe they're just bullshitters!) I first came across them last year when they released a very good split album with Sydney's Thee Evil Twin (https://dirtyflairrecordcompany.bandcamp.com/album/10-piece-feed) but I missed debut lp Hey! We're The Missile Studs (which I'll be acquainting myself with later  (https://dirtyflairrecordcompany.bandcamp.com/album/hey-were-the-missile-studs).

Anyway, the new album is titled With Love From The Missile Studs and it's getting released on May 7th by Dirty Flair (Aus) and No Front Teeth (UK). Not sure how many of the dayglo yellow vinyl will be left over as there was only 50 pressed (available from Stamp Out Disco (https://stampoutdisco.bandcamp.com/album/with-love-from-the-missile-studs) but it's also on black and it's streaming now so hurry over this way...  https://dirtyflairrecordcompany.bandcamp.com/album/with-love-from-the-missile-studs

3 of the tracks from the split album resurface along with a bunch of newbies including a rather good cover of a Buzzcocks classic. It's irreverent garage influenced punk that I'm sure you'll love as much as I do. Take a bow Australia, you're home to some killer bands.

This track is a fine example of what you can expect, it's called Sooo Useless...

Boots On The Table - Sick Of Politics

  Left or right
  same old shite
  same old rhetoric
I don't to hear it, I've had enough....

Boots On The Table (https://www.facebook.com/BOOTS-on-the-TABLE-104895604671374) are a new street punk band with, from what I can make out, members from both Belfast and Toronto. They boast the vocal talents of Rob McLarnon, who you may know from Buck Eejit (https://buckeejit.bandcamp.com/).

I don't know anything else about them other than they've released a debut ep on cd ("5 killer choons for just £4 plus p&p. Contact the band page and we'll sort yiz out"). If you want to give it a listen go here : https://bootsonthetable.bandcamp.com/releases

The Northern Ireland accented vocals prompt me to make comparisons with SLF and maybe Runnin' Riot. It's a very promising debut and I'm looking forward to hearing more. This track bemoans the calibre of politicians on both sides of the left/right divide and it's called Sick Of Politics...

Play Dead - Skint

Back to South London today to big up 3 teenagers (Joe Blair (Guitar & vocals), Ollie Clarke (Bass & backing vocals) & Louis Englefield (Drums)) from Herne Hill who recently released a belting debut ep titled Skint. They're called Play Dead and they've been making a few waves with airplay on both Radio 1 and 6 Music.

They introduced themselves last year with a track extolling the virtues of the Kent seaside town of Whitstable and I jumped on the bandwagon a few months later when I played Shaun on the show. Now that tale of the pint supping, fight starting van driver reappears on what's a fresh, fun ep.

A lazy comparison would be to call them the English Chats. I also hear shades of Manchester trio Aerial Salad. 5 tracks of punk tuneage fresh out of the garage, it's available via Blitzcat Records :  https://blitzcatrecords.com/

This is the title track, it's a problem most of us can sympathise with in these austere times, it's called Skint...

Slobheads - Rothman Blues

Slobheads (https://www.facebook.com/slobheads) are a young trash punk duo from South West London featuring Harry Jarvis (guitar/vocals) and Macey Sherman (drums). They surfaced in 2017 with the Sod's Law ep and followed it up a year later with another called Neighbourhood Nasties. 2 guys with attitude that sing about getting drunk and political ideology that fall somewhere between Slaves and Cool Jerks.

And they've recently returned with a very fine new single about another of their vices, smoking. "It's about all the cravings, the poncing and begging for a snout when you run out but the possessiveness of having your own pack of cigarettes and not wanting to share with overs. knowing and feeling the effects of smoking but not having a caring in the world about the implications. its dirty and horrible but do we care enough to quit? Course not!" It's an unmistakably British bluesy stomp with gang vocals from Ross Brunton helping to give it a big, beefy singalong feel. Just one of 24 impressive new punk tracks on the Just Some Punk Songs show later today, you're all invited to join the chatroom and give feedback (https://www.facebook.com/events/118448970218498/).

You can get it as a name your price download here :

  It's called Rothman Blues...

the SUCK - J Prozac On A BMX Bike

the SUCK (https://www.facebook.com/StreetRockSUCK/) are a band that no one knows much about but who cares about details when they release such great music. They describe their sound as no bullshit street rock for fans of the Ramones, HEAD, The Vapids and NECK. They released a ST ep in 2018 and followed it up a year later with an album titled In-Cog-Neat-O                                                                (check 'em out here :   https://thesuckstreetrock.bandcamp.com/).

Now they're back with sophomore album, Boris Sprinkler (Boris The Sprinkler being the Green Bay, Wisconsin, punks who released a 1998 album titled Suck). It's 10 tracks of catchy as fuck pop punk. They sing about stuff like martini drinking secret agents, drinking, Dungeons and Dragons, 20 sided dice and... more drinking. Their influences are front and centre, it's fun, irreverent and you can find the various coloured vinyl versions over at Mom's Basement Records   https://momsbasementrecords.bigcartel.com/

This is the closing track on the album and the most melodic. I'll be playing it on this week's Just Some Punk Songs show (Sunday 8pm UK time : https://www.facebook.com/events/118448970218498/) Possibly the biggest pop punk earworm of the year and namechecking one of the genre's nicest guys, this is J Prozac On A BMX Bike...

Jackson Reid Briggs & The Heaters - If You Only Knew

There's been some really great punk music coming out of Australia in recent times (but you already know that). A number of the more impressive bands are releasing albums that can certainly be tagged as punk rock but which will also find favour with an audience that enjoys driving, guitar led rock without considering themselves fans of the punk genre. I'm thinking in particular of the likes of Stiff Richards, Private Function and Civic, bands that have all been very successful in wowing both fans and critics with excellent recent releases. I think it's only right that Jackson Reid Briggs & The Heaters (https://www.facebook.com/jacksonreidbriggs) are mentioned in the same breath.

After a couple of years playing solo, Jackson Reid Briggs enlisted the services of a bunch of drinking buddies and released the 2015 7" Holding On/Burned It. Since then the Melbourne based outfit have been responsible for 5 very impressive full lengths, the latest of which, Waiting In A Corner, has just dropped.

Bookended by a couple of brief instrumentals (Intro & Outro), are 7 classy rockers that'll remind you of fellow countrymen The Saints and Radio Birdmen. It's an almost hypnotic barrage of wall of sound guitar work with Jackson's vocals being the icing on top of a very appetising cake. It's available now on vinyl (black or ltd edition white) and download from Legless Records  https://jacksonreidbriggs.bandcamp.com/album/waiting-in-a-corner

If  you're in the UK or Europe, Drunken Sailor Records (https://www.drunkensailorrecords.co.uk/) will be releasing it in a month.

This is If Only You Knew...
