The Oozes - Ready

The Oozes (https://www.facebook.com/theoozes) are a "London based Queer Punk Band" who've been around for a few years, have attracted the attention of Radio 1 and who've recently completed a 42 date tour of the UK and Ireland. They've also been streamed over 41 million times so it's quite possible you're already familiar with them.

For some reason, I can't remember coming across them before.

Anyway I have now and I'll be playing their recent single on this week's Just Some Punk Songs show (https://www.facebook.com/events/128499806908218). It's their 2nd single of 2023 following on from the mainstream radio friendly delights of DBSAC (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9jB1x6679o).

It's a song that's close to the band's heart, it's about the reaction of parents towards trans children and challenges those parents to offer support and acceptance and to put their child first rather than their own prejudices.

  It's called Ready...

Barry - No More Boys

Something a little bit different today.

Barry (https://www.facebook.com/barryband/) are a 4 piece from London. None of the band members are called Barry. They're called Helen, Mark, Kathy & Bart. According to their Bandcamp page they're a queercore band. They're also fun and seem to have a happy knack of writing songs that stick in your head.

They recently released a single called Neolithic Homosex. It's 2 tracks of the kind of music that used to be performed by bands who wore t shirts saying Twee As Fuck and who "woke up every morning to the sound of Sarah records on a compilation tape her friend had sent to her from Paris."

The A side is a perfectly fine song about gay sex in the age of the cavemen (and cave women) but it's the cute as fuck flip side that's got me smitten.

You can get the red vinyl 7" or the name your price download here...

A breakup song that'll break your heart whilst simultaneously make you feel all warm and fuzzy, this is No More Boys...

Pink Suits - My Old Man's A Dustman

(photo : Kathryn Betts)

Sometimes you just want to listen to something fun. Shouty, sweary fun. And that's what I've been doing the last few days courtesy of Pink Suits (https://www.facebook.com/pinksuitsband).

They're a "Queer Feminist Punk Rock & Rage" duo based in Margate who formed in 2017 who've just released a rather amazing debut album titled Political Child. There's a much better review than this over on Louder Than War that throws comparisons around to the likes of White Stripes, Crass and Chumbawamba and I have to say that their eye catching video for Fake Great Britain  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf035k1myxo) did remind me of Danbert Nobacon and Alice Nutter stomping around. I also get a Victorian music hall vibe (the duo are well versed in dance and physical theatre). Maybe a more contemporary comparison would be Cockwomble meets Cold Meat. The message is serious but the delivery is often vaudeville.

Highlights are plenty and include Anarchist Wisdom which had me shouting along and Decades Back ("They’ll fuck the queers fuck the poor they’ll fuck the foreign ones even more drop the bombs even the score when money is power, all they want is more"). The title track begins "Your time is up mother fuckers... and tells those in authority "we're coming for you and we're gunning for change you’re gonna hear our noise you’re gonna feel our rage."

The track I'm highlighting is the first on the album and it's a little more restrained than many of the other tracks but the lyrics strike a chord. It's called My Old Man's A Dustman...

My mum asked me recently do you ever just switch off but there’s palm oil in everything and I’ve got a chronic cough there's warnings in the paper not to breathe the fucking air and white supremacist terrorists won’t be stopped with thoughts and prayers The rich won't pay their taxes but the poor get sent to jail and the rest of us pick up the slack when the bank’s too big to fail There’s children kept in cages their abusers all walk free everyone just turns their head it’s not effecting me the NHS is failing at the hands of tory scum I weep for failed America it’s a sign of what’s to come if you wanna have a baby still then contemplate it’s worth $10 000 each at least to overpopulate this earth the planets fucking burning and those with sway don’t care it’s up to us to foot the bill now that’s not very fair the media’s not mediating Murdoch’s made his bed just suppress the voters now democracy is dead Black lives fucking matter Now watch how you respond Neutrality is violence You’ve been silent for too long Our Trans brothers and sisters Need our voices in the fight You feel attacked because you’re wrong It’s not because you’re white The times they keep on changing And you try to block the way This fighting for equality Is every single day We are all responsible This world is fucking ours It’s time to strip authority From all abusive powers The queen is just for tourists So let’s sell her fucking crown our rents are on the rise again and the pound’s way fucking down The numbers just keep going up on people sleeping rough But theyre defined poverty and claimed they’d done enough so we’re eating out of food banks and working till were dead it’s getting harder to resist I can’t get out of bed My old man’s a dustman He’ll work until he’s dead He’ll grind his bones into the ground to make his daily bread

GARBITCH - Kill All Abusers

Here's an update featuring a band I know pretty much nothing about other than that they're a queercore punk band from California who have a Self Titled (debut?) ep up on Bandcamp. Info is so scarce there's not even a date of release though I'm guessing it's new.  You can find it here :     https://garbitch.bandcamp.com/album/garbitch-self-titled

There's 5 tracks on the ep, track 1 invites us to laugh in the faces of crying white supremacists as the stars and stripes burns. Track 3 is a call to shoot the kkkop in side your head. Track 4 deals with society's lack of empathy when it comes to mental disorder and track 5 screams "GENDER QUEER ANGER IS JUSTIFIED ANGER!" The lyrics pour vituperative bile over a soundscape that's often sludgy and always heavy. You can taste the enmity.

And as for track 2. It's a final solution to sexual abuse. It's called Kill All Abusers...

I'm getting sick and tired of your sympathizing shit
"My homie wouldn't do this, my homie wouldn't do that"
I'm getting sick and tired of these damn apologists
Fuck these complacent ass mother fuckers
Fuck all abusers and fuck their friends
Fuck all abusers we'll choke em til they're dead
Fuck all abusers and fuck their friends
Fuck all abusers we'll shoot em in the head

Your sympathy is complacency in misogyny and white supremacy

"oH mY hOmIeS n0t lIK3 ThAt, oH mY hOmIeS sO chILL, Where's your proof bitch? You attention seeking bitch!"

Fuck all abusers and fuck their friends
Fuck all abusers we'll choke em till they're dead
Fuck all abusers and fuck their friends
Fuck all abusers we'll shoot em the head
Fuck all abusers and fuck their friends
Fuck all abusers we'll choke em till they're dead
Fuck all abusers and fuck their friends
Fuck all abusers we'll shoot em the fucking head

Choked Up - Home

Choked Up are from Brooklyn and formed in 2017. They line up with Cristy C. Road (Vocals/Guitar), Rachel Alicea Gibbons (Lead Guitar), Rose Bomberg (Bass) and Wes Ruiz (Drums). They play pop punk songs "about love and companionship and special connections, but during the apocalypse." Just in case any of you has a hell of a memory and thinks "hell that vocalist sounds familar" Cristy has featured on here before with her previous band The Homewreckers (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2015/09/the-homewreckers-nervous-rex.html).

  https://www.facebook.com/ChokedUpNYC/

They've recently released debut album Dichoso Corazon which they present as a love letter to the broken hearted. Engineered and produced by the legendary Mass Giorgini (Screeching Weasel, Squirtgun, Common Rider), it's catchy as hell Latino queercore pop punk heaven. Lots of hooks and melodies but with just enough grit to make it an extremely palatable dish. You can check it out here :   https://chokedup.bandcamp.com/album/dichoso-corazon

This was the first single from the album, it's an earworm that demands repeat plays and it's called Home...

Shooting Daggers - HOSTILE

Shooting Daggers are a new hardcore punk 3 piece from London who've recently released the impressive Demo 2019 ep. The line up of the band is Godinha (drums), Beatrice (bass) and Salomé (vocals/guitar). As well as the demo, they feature on the 25 track compilation from Hell Hath No Fury Records which is titled #SolidarityNotSilence Compilation (Pt 1). All proceeds from the comp go towards the women facing defamation case for speaking up   https://www.crowdjustice.com/case/solidaritynotsilence/

You can get the comp here :   https://hellhathnofuryrecords.bandcamp.com/album/solidaritynotsilence-compilation-pt1

As for Shooting Daggers, you can get more info here :   https://www.facebook.com/shootingdaggersxhc/

The Demo features 3 pounding tracks of rumbling aggression. It's a very promising calling card and you can snap it up as a name your price download : https://shootingdaggers.bandcamp.com/releases

This is the opening track, it's called HOSTILE...

Limp Wrist - They Tell Me

Limp Wrist formed in 1998 and are an American queercore punk band who play fast hardcore music. They're scattered across various parts of the U.S. so only gig and record occasionally but they recently got together to put out their first release in 9 years. The album is called Facades and you'll find it here :  https://limpwrist.bandcamp.com/album/facades

The current line up of the band is Martin Sorrondeguy (vocals), Scott Moore (guitar), Andrew Martini (bass) and Paul Henry (drums).

They describe the album as "11 new trax of complete punk faggotry." It's angry, confrontational and really bloody good, or at least tracks 1 to 8 are. Once they've got you wound up tight and bouncing off the walls they do a complete u turn for the last 3 tracks and chill you back down again with 3 tracks of electro noodling you can groove out to.

This is one of the hard hitting songs, it's called They Tell Me....

en talk about my maleness
And how I tamper with the line
Fem fearing cock-suckers
(lame homosexual alphas who dislike women)
get away
Cuz Iain’t got the time

Norms talk about my tricks
And the many that I’ve had
No commitment to the man on the cross
Or those who follow his path.

Left Right, Left Right, they keep pushing!
Left Right, Left Right, they keep Pushing
They keep pushing the left to the right,

They talk to me about my speech
They talk to me about my smell
Extremists got rules for me everything
Boring squares go to hell.

Friends are angry with me
Cuz we don’t see eye to eye
On every single issue
So now they won’t give me time.

Left Right, Left Right, they keep pushing!
Left Right, Left Right, they keep Pushing
they keep pushing the left to the right,

Left Right, Left Right, they keep pushing!
Left Right,

They created a box
To squeeze all queers in
Their definitions have flattened us
Stay fucked and never go in.

The Homewreckers - Nervous Rex

In the third and final instalment in what's turned out to be a Mooster Records special, today I bring you a track from the new album by Brooklyn queer-core band The Homewreckers.

Formed in 2008 as an outlet to "write emotionally-distraught pop-punk songs about queer problems and manic depression" the band have survived several line up changes and now feature a line up of Cristy Road (vocals/guitar), J (bass/vocals), Jamie Nieves (drums/vocals) and Ana MeiLi (guitar/vocals). Their influences are diverse, ranging from Broadway musicals to Bikini Kill via a meandering route that takes in the likes of The Undertones, Crimpshine, Cyndi Lauper, Wanda Jackson, The Muffs and Operation Ivy.

In 2009 they released the Daydreaming About Assholes ep and this was followed in 2013 by Manic Recession which was a split ep with City Mouse and which features an early version of the song I'm posting today. You can check out those releases here :  https://thehomewreckers.bandcamp.com/

Their new album, their debut,  is called I,Statements and is a hard rocking pop punk delight distinguished by Cristy's unique vocals, no one else sounds quite like these guys. Check it out here : https://moosterrecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-homewreckers-i-statements

G.L.O.S.S. - Outcast Stomp

Acronym : 1) a word formed from the initial letters or group of letters of words in a set phrase or series of words and pronounced as a separate word.

                    2) a set of initials representing a name, organization, or the like, with each letter pronounced separately.

For example, here's a few acronyms you should be hearing more of this year :

S.P.E.C.T.R.E.  :  Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion.

U.N.C.L.E.  :  United Network Command for Law and Enforcement.

G.L.O.S.S.  :  Girls Living Outside Society's Shit.

The first two will be coming shortly to a movie screen near you whilst the third will be pummelling your senses with some of the most exciting new hardcore music around.

Featuring Corey (drums), Julaya (bass), Sadie (vocals), Tannrr (guitar) and Jake (guitar), G.L.O.S.S. are based in Olympia, Washington and have recently announced themselves to the world with a ferocious and mightily pissed off demo that is a rallying call for all those that live outside society's norms.

Dealing with issues such as homosexuality, violence against transgender women, rejection, and alienation the demo is a frustrated primal scream that aims to provoke a reaction with it's outpouring of years of built up anger and rage. It's probably the best and most honest calling card you'll hear all year. Check it out.... http://girlslivingoutsidesocietysshit.bandcamp.com/releases

The song I'm highlighting is for all those of you that refuse to conform. It's ok to be different, it's ok not to do as you're told, it's ok to fight back. This is Outcast Stomp......
