Fatskins - Only Came Here To Fight (Reviewed By Jason Long from Smash The Discos Webzine)

This week's guest review is courtesy of Jason Long who is the man behind the excellent Smash The Discos webzine. He's looking to make the zine bigger and better and has enlisted the services of a few extra contributors, including myself so hopefully you'll be seeing some of my stuff in there soon. If you're a fan of punk, oi and hardcore feel free to bookmark it......  https://smashthediscos.wordpress.com/

Jason's chosen a song by Phoenix, Arizona oi band Fatskins. They formed in 1996 and feature a line up of Mike (vocals), Wynn (guitar), Tom (bass), Kris (rhythm guitar) and Wayne (drums). You can get more info on them here :  https://www.facebook.com/Fatskins/

Their Viva! ep is on Bandcamp : https://fatskinsphx.bandcamp.com/

  Over to Jason.....

Whenever anyone asks me about The Fatskins, the first song I point them to is Only Came Here To Fight, off of their 2015 release, Viva!

The Fatskins are the first, and top, name in American Skinhead Rock n Roll. Mike Oxley has a no nonsense, "spit it the fuck out and say what you mean" approach to writing lyrics, with a charged vocal presence to boot. That ability truly shines in "Only Came Here To Fight". I truly love this song because of where the journey takes you. The opening of the song sets the mood for anyone who can relate to the night of the hunt, when you're in that dark mood and shit's about to get seriously real. This is followed up with one of the most catchiest choruses you could ever ask for. One part I always wait for is the pick slide before the last chorus. It's amazing how something so simple can pump you up so heavily, prepairing you for whatever obstacles you're about to face that day. Even if you're not in some sort of fucked up mood, like I am in most of the time, Only Came Here To Fight is a rocked out tune that deserves it's place near the top of your playlist. For me, personally, it reminds me that a punch in the face is never the final blow, but rather much needed therapy that puts shit into perspective, haha.

Take it from someone who obsessively murders tracks to death. I've been listening to it daily for over a year now and haven't tired of it yet. Enjoi...

Last Orders - You Better Run

Last Orders are, according to their Facebook group, London's Finest Oi! band. Last week I was sent a copy of their 2015 album Time Gentlemen Please and it's packed with your quintessential tough as nails cockney singalongs. As well as several of their own compositions (one of which features below), it also includes covers of songs by the likes of the 4 Skins, Cockney Rejects and Bruisers.

They probably won't appeal to everyone, they ain't politically correct, but if you enjoy gritty bootboy anthems then you should check them out. They're currently working on a new album.

Co-written by ex bassist Stu Newman (he featured on here recently with his current band Underclass UK) and featuring Frankie Flame on electric piano, this is a song that suggests it's not a good idea to fool around with them. You Better Run....

Heavy Drapes - Should I Suck Or Should I Blow

Heavy Drapes are a Scottish 4 piece from Edinburgh who's line up includes De Liberate (vocals), Rikki Stiv (guitar), Jerry Dangerous (bass) and Billy Chaos (drums). They originally formed in 2007 but spectacularly imploded soon after. Come 2015 and frontman De Liberate decided to give things another go and their Sex Pistols/Iggy & The Stooges/MC5 brand of punk n roll is finding it's way to the ears (and hearts) of a new audience.

Unhappy with what they percieve to be a safeness and predictability about the current punk scene, this is a band who aim to bring the excitement back. They channel the energy, swagger and danger of the early punk pioneers.

The song below went down a storm on last week's Just Some Punk Songs show (the show is saved here : https://www.mixcloud.com/mick-fletcher/just-some-punk-songs-140517/), it originally came out in 2015 before being rereleased last year by Tarbeach Records. This Is Should I Suck Or Should I Blow.....

Rotten Love - You Make Me Twitch

Pretty much all of the updates recently have been new releases (a sign that 2017 is turning out to be a good year for punk music) but today I'm posting a song that's been out for a couple of years but which is an upbeat little number that deserves a place in any collection of great songs.

Rotten Love are a "power punk" band from Sheffield who released (in Dec 2015) a self titled 8 track mini album which you can find name your price here : https://rottenlove.bandcamp.com/releases . The band features members who've also played in a number of other bands including Pudge, Death Job, Wank Sinatra, Setbacks & Aurochs.

A few months later 5 of the songs resurfaced on a 7" called Songs For Rotten Lovers which was released by Kids Of The Lughole and you can check that out here :  https://kidsofthelughole.bandcamp.com/album/songs-for-rotten-lovers

From that record, here's a song that'll make you want to jump around. Snotty, high energy and fun, this is You Make Me Twitch.....

Afterboltxebike - Pavlichenko

"Fell by your gun, yes, Fell by your gun,

For more than three hundred Nazis fell by your gun"

Afterboltxebike are a hardcore punk band from San Nicolás de los Garza , Mexico who formed in 2015 with the intention of sharing their Communist ideology. Their name comes from a song by Basque punk band Kortatu and roughly translates as After Bolsheviks. As well as putting across their message via music, they're also involved in various political initiatives.

They're a 3 piece comprising of Gabriela (drums), Andrea (bass/vocals) and Diego (guitar/vocals). As far as I'm aware, they've only recorded a couple of songs so far, one of them is called De Que Lado Estas and asks which side are you on? The bosses or the workers? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoTFqsndBlA

The other song, which you'll find below, is about Lyudmila Pavlichenko, the World War 2 Red Army sniper who was credited with over 300 kills and is the most prolific female sniper in history. She was the subject of a 1946 song by Woody Guthrie, a sample of which was used to end the song  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHKjOl9ocR0

   https://afterboltxebike.bandcamp.com/releases.

  This is Pavlichenko.....

Afina su mira, recarga su arma
Su objetivo es la peste parda
Respira hondo y dispara
Otro nazi ha muerto por sus balas
Defendió Odessa y disparo en Crimea
Lyudmila Pavlichenko era toda una guerrera
Esperando en la nieve inicio el infierno
De los fascistas que invadieron

Trecientos nazis murieron
Pavlichenko los cazó
Oficiales y sargentos
A ninguno perdonó.

G.S.B - Telephone Bore

Following on from yesterday's update featuring D.L.I.M.C. here's another one of Mark Winter's many projects. G.S.B. (Goldman Sex Batallion, or Gordon Spicer Band as was ) have released a cassette ep called Goldman's Beat and it's more of Mark's inventively off kilter diy indie punk. There's also a non ep track called I Like Violence on the Cool Bands cassette compilation alongside songs by some of his other bands such as Ooze, Big Zit, C.C.T.V. etc.

From Goldman's Beat this is the "hit" it's a jaunty, wickedly inventive pop song called Telephone Bore....

D.L.I.M.C. - Wicker Park

I'm not even going to pretend to know much about D.L.I.M.C. other than it's the brainchild of Mark Winter, one of the most original and inventive musicians out there. From Indiana, he's also involved with a plethora of other bands such as Coneheads, Liquids, G.S.B. (I'll feature them on here soon), C.C.T.V. etc....

As D.L.I.M.C. (it stands for d.leopardo industrial music co.) he's released a bunch of catchy as hell diy cassettes (February Cassingle, July Cassingle etc) that you can find on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5moaPjC8XUcKmd9bbNqqYDvRYAY3dxQR ). The song you'll find below is the one that seems to be most people's pick of the bunch, it's from the November Cassingle and it's called Wicker Park....

Living in the suburbs is such a drag My parents give me money to fill plastic bags Someday I’ll live large and get a brand new car Drive to Chicago where my life will start Oh I’m so cliche The city and my suburb are the fucking same I'll move to Logan Square, shop at Wicker Park American Apparel and latte art Staying inside after it gets dark I love the city just not the poor parts My alternative lifestyle is a fucking farce Mommy thinks I’m crazy cause i dyed all my hair Pour packages of food items on the clothes that i wear Some less fortunates tried to steal my backpack The six corners is the only place where i don’t get laughed at So you work for a company that tells other people About a service that a copy company offers through a website? Oh you go to a club in Boystown where they play retro new wave music? What’s that like? Who fucking cares about the brand of circular sunglasses that you wear Your slick beard or your fixed gear bike Or whatever shit that encompasses your life I happen to think that your boring and trite So you say there the same, does that make me half right? I’m still better off than you, you delusional ass wipe People like you just make me sick Your city is the suburbs, your poor is for the rich When you abandon your apartment and move back with your mom I hope it all burns so your neighborhood is gone!

Jack The Lad - You Can Have It

Jack The Lad are a band from the East Anglia area who started life playing covers of classic oi and punk tunes (available for birthdays, engagements, weddings, funerals and barmitzvahs! contact them at Jackthelad2424@live.com). Which is all well and good but possibly not interesting enough to get them posted on here. What is far more interesting is that fuelled by a love of Cock Sparrer, Blitz, Ruts, Cockney Rejects etc, they've started writing their own material and last December they released a debut single which featured a couple of very decent self penned tracks. Fingers crossed, they're hoping 2017 will see the release of an album.

They've been together since 2013 though have previously featured in a number of other bands. Their single was released by Rebellion Records and the songs are You Can Have It and Get Up. The A side borrows one of punk's most famous riffs and is an oi stomper that could have easily been released 30 years ago. The flip side is equally as good and the cover features an iconic photo of one of Britain's greatest actors, Sir Michael Caine.

You can find out more about them here : https://www.facebook.com/JacktheLad1000/

I'll be playing this song on today's Just Some Punk Songs show along with plenty more great new punk tunes. If you want to listen it starts at 8pm (UK time) today (Tues 15 Nov) here : http://mixlr.com/mick-fletcher/

Three Eyed Jack - Still not OK

A punchy little number today that you would have had a few months ago if the message from Kevin Talloen hadn't been hidden away with a bunch of others in Facebook's filtered messages archive. Better late than never I suppose.

Three Eyed Jack are a skate punk/pop punk trio from Oostkamp in Belgium. As well as Kevin (drums), the band also features Wietse Scheyving (guitar/vocals) and Jens Talloen (bass). https://www.facebook.com/threeeyedjack/

Their first release was a 10 track demo in 2011 and they followed it up with an album in 2015 titled Always In For Happy Days. You can check out the album here : https://threeeyedjackpunk.bandcamp.com/releases

Razorcut - Raise Our Glasses

Today I'm posting a song by another one of the bands that are leading the current welcome resurgence of Oi/Streetpunk music. As you'll be aware if you're a regular Just Some Punk Songs visitor (or if you heard the Oi music special show that I put together a while back :  http://mixlr.com/mick-fletcher/showreel/just-some-punk-songs-oi-special/), there's plenty of great new bands putting out some wonderful new punk anthems. Long may it continue.

RazorCut are from Melbourne and formed in 2011. They took their name from the Guitar Gangsters' song That's When The Razor Cuts. Influences include The Crack, CockSparrer, Argy Bargy, Blitz, Anti Heroes etc....

Their debut ep, Combative Attitude, came out in 2012 on both Rebellion and Longshot Records. Following this release, original singer Owen left the band and was replaced by Marching Order's Al White. Next up came a couple more eps, Gone Are Those Days... and Battles plus a 7" single, Locked Up / Fighting Fit. Debut album, Rise Again, came out (again on Rebellion & Longshot) to some rave reviews in 2015 and you'll find a song from this release below.

They've recently been in the studio recording a new album, it's going to be called Common Enemy and they're hoping it'll be out later this year. Whilst we wait, this is an extremely catchy tribute to the ones who aren't here tonight. Raise Our Glasses.....

Pill Squad - I Turned Out A Punk

I'm posting a song today that went down very well on last night's Just Some Punk Songs show (you can listen to that show here : http://mixlr.com/mick-fletcher/showreel/just-some-punk-songs-090816/). As you'll probably recognise, it's a cover of a track that appeared on Big Audio Dynamite's F-Punk album in 1995 and was also a single for them on Radioactive records that same year.

Pill Squad are from Vancouver and feature Tracy Brooks (vocals), Tim Chan (guitar), Ed Hurrell (bass) and Scott Beadle (drums). Despite being a relatively new band, the members have been around the punk scene since the late 70's. Brooks and Beadle played together in Vancouver band The Hip Type in the mid 80's and Chan was in 64 Funnycars and now also fronts China Syndrome. Hurrell is a member of Stab 'Em In The Abdomen.

If you check out their Bandcamp page :( https://pillsquad2000.bandcamp.com/album/pill-squad-4-song-ep) you can snap up 2015's 4-Song ep "name your price." As well as the B.A.D. cover there's also a cover of the Girls At Our Best classic Getting Nowhere Fast. Their most recent release is Uncut : Live At The Wise Hall and that's also name your price.

This is I Turned Out A Punk.....

Mummy was a hostess Daddy was a drunk
'Cause they didn't love me then I turned out a punk
An ex house full of memories memories and junk
Never had a childhood I turned out a punk
Better learn how to play guitar with a plink and a plunk
I didn't like jazz I didn't like funk
I turned out a punk
I turned out a punk
Slowly started slipping down till my ship was sunk
Going nowhere in my life I turned out a punk
Didn't care 'bout anyone sat round smoking skunk
Didn't know what I had done I turned out a punk
Better learn how to play guitar with a plink and a plunk
I didn't like jazz I didn't like funk
I turned out a punk
I turned out a punk
Better learn how to play guitar with a plink and a plunk
I didn't like jazz I didn't like funk
I turned out a punk
I turned out a punk
Woke up one afternoon with a mouth full of gunk
Blob out with my video I turned out a punk
Took my disabilities packed them in a trunk
Rock 'n roll's alright by me I turned out a punk
Better learn how to play guitar with a plink and a plunk
I didn't like jazz I didn't like funk
I turned out a punk
I turned out a punk

2 Sick Monkeys - Happy Days

Tight, melodic and in your face, 2 Sick Monkeys formed in 2000 and feature Fred Nus (drums/vocals) and Pete Tower (bass/vocals). Despite there only being two of them, the Swindon outfit still kick up a hell of a racket. If you check out their bandcamp page you'll find their back catalogue : https://2sickmonkeys.bandcamp.com/

They've been gigging regulars both at home and abroad and have shared a stage with the likes of The Buzzcocks, GBH, The Dickies, Discharge, Sham 69, Wonk Unit, Dirt Box Disco and many more.

There's a new ep in the pipeline but whilst we wait (and whilst I post a few updates via my phone that I got ready before going away on holiday!) here's a recent video they did for a song that was on last year's About Time ep.

A suicide note of sorts, this is Happy Days......

Inside, outside, upside down
All my life I've played the clown
I'll end it all in this dead-end (fucking) town

Nightmare stuck inside this hole
My brain is mush, I've lost control
How much further will I fall?

So much shit stuck in my head, I wish that I was dead
Happy days

This way, that way, where to go?
Will I learn? I just don't know
Everything's I told you so

All these nights, all these regrets
I tried so hard but can't forget
All caught up with me in the end

Tankini - We Sat On The Porch

Tankini are from Olympia, Washington and feature Erica (guitar/vocals), Tannrr (guitar), Eli (bass/vocals) and Sadie (drums/vocals).

They released an ep called Do U Suk in March 2015 and they tag their music as punk that is poppy. You can get the ep "name your price" over on Bandcamp : http://tankini.bandcamp.com/.

The only other bit of info I have for you is that Sadie and Tannrr are now in one of the best bands around, G.L.O.S.S. which would be cool in itself but more importantly the ep is really bloody good.

This is We Sat On The Porch.......

you broke up with me in a text message. I don't resent you, you're stronger than me. I wish I knew what was good for me, what would make me happy, we both know that its complicated. I swear I love you. I'm not the best person at showing it, I'm not the best person I know it. Everything in life is a tragedy, and that makes it beautiful. Make something with all the shit around you. Our hearts will grow stronger, our skin will get tougher, if we lose one another. I swear I love you. I'm not the best person at showing it, I'm not the best person I know it. Please don't close your door on me, I am the same person now I was before. You say I take what I need. Well, when did that become a bad thing. You broke up with me in a text message. I broke up with the shape of your mouth. We sat on the porch and then you walked away and I called out your name you said "fuck you, I'm leaving". I'm sorry; I can't love you that way. And I swear I love you, I'm not the best person at showing it, I'm not the best person I know it.

In Evil Hour - Predators

In Evil Hour are from Darlington and have been together in various incarnations since 2003. They're influenced by bands such as AFI, Bad Religion, Propagandhi and Rise Against and their songs rail angrily against socio and political issues such as injustice, class, gender discrimination and the wilful destruction of our planet for profit.

Taking their name from a novel first published in 1962 by Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, they comprise of Alice (vocals), Gareth (guitar), Gibb (bass) and Mike (drums).

Their debut ep, Tell Your God To Ready For Blood, came out shortly after they took up their current name in 2011 and a couple of years later they released debut album, The World Bleeds Out. Their most recent ep, Built On Our Backs, surfaced last year. You can check those releases out here : http://inevilhour.bandcamp.com/

Some of you may know that there's now a Just Some Punk Songs internet show that plays the type of top notch punk music that'll you'll find on this blog. Tonight's show (28th June) features music by almost all female fronted bands (with a couple of male fronted bands to make up the numbers) and I'll be playing a song by In Evil Hour. You can either listen here at 8pm (UK TIME) or at your convenience when the show is saved as a showreel : http://mixlr.com/mick-fletcher/  If you want to say hello, right click the link and join a number of other punk enthusiasts in the chatroom.

This is taken from last years ep and it's a damning indictment of drone warfare called Predators.......

We'll celebrate the best of it Target is down, successful hit And bathe in imagined glory As saviours of this world Now say we're just and right We're fighting for your life So tell me now Do you feel more safe? Are you not afraid? We're the Predators in the skies Justice metered by the blind We'll bring your walls down on you We're the Predators in the skies We deliver the Hellfire We'll bring your walls down on you The patriots that we have sent To lay waste to these battlements That now all in ruins could be Mistaken for a home With hollow words lament Casualties never meant So tell me now Do you feel more safe? Are you not afraid? Paint the shadows on the wall This is a warning to us all No due process here

Abolitionist - Birds, Bees And Disease

Maybe you've noticed the rise in internet punk shows that are playing some really cool music (have I mentioned the weekly Just Some Punk Songs show???). One of the best of these shows is former Dr And The Crippens' bassist Wayne Elliott's Pulsebeat (it airs every Wednesday at 9pm GMT here : http://mixlr.com/wayne-elliott/). One band he's been playing is Abolitionist and I was impressed enough that I'm highlighting one of their songs today.

The band hail from Portland, Oregon and have been together since September 2009. There's been a few changes in personnel down the years but the current line up features Dustin Herron (vocals/guitar), Ryan Sotomayor (bass/vocals) and Jeremy Dunlap. (drums/vocals). As well as singing and playing guitar, Dustin also runs the record label 1859 Records and their catalogue features music from great bands such as ИO///sé and Blackbird Raum (http://1859records.bandcamp.com/).  As if that weren't enough there's also his cassette only Culture Death Tapes label. Watch out for tomorrow's update as Dustin has sent me his top 10 favourite songs list.

There's a number of releases for you to check out on their Bandcamp page (https://abolitionist.bandcamp.com/) including their latest album The Vicious Rumor (which you can snap up "name your price"). Various cassette and vinyl versions of their music are available in Europe from Different Kitchen Records (http://differentkitchen.bigcartel.com/).

It was thought that they could be calling it a day following the release of The Vicious Rumor but they recently announced that 6 new tunes had been written and that they weren't dead yet. Whilst we await any future activity, this is one off their last album, Birds, Bees and Disease.....

Liberty, I always said I'd die for you. Now that death has come from

above, I find myself smiling, thinking back on the better times

(moments we spent not giving a fuck). I only wish we'd wasted more

time than we did. Birds, bees, and disease -- bringing us to our fucking

knees. If we make it through this alive, I'll try to do better. Travel out

to

more ancient forests, explore more water. It's a beautiful fucking world

but I guess we didn't always notice. Let's navigate these poisoned

Portland streets so we can get back out there.

Barney - Don't Trust

Barney are an up tempo, guitar driven band from Northern Ireland who, like The Inflatable Dolls (see yesterday's update), are flying the flag for that corner of The British Isles. Following in the footsteps of such luminaries as Stiff Little Fingers, The Undertones, The Outcasts, Rudi, Defects, Protex etc is no easy thing but with their 2015 album 20 years being hailed album of the year by the NI punk website I think it's fair to say that they're making a damn good go of it.

They're no new kids on the block, as far back as the 90's they were supporting the likes of SLF, NOFX and the UK Subs. Their hometown is Newtownabbey and they line up Rab (lead vocals/guitar), Jeremy (lead guitar), Bret (drums/vocals) and Scotty (bass) and their sound has been described as being a mix of pop punk and early oi.

The album is on Punkerama Records of Belfast and this is the opening track, Don't Trust.....

Patsy's Rats - Rock N' Roll Friend

Patsy's Rats are from Portland, Oregon and are headed by Patsy Gelb (daughter of Giant Sand's Howe Gelb) and Christian Blunda (guitarist & vocalist of Mean Jeans). Also featured on their 2015 s/t 7 song ep are Aaron Levy (bass/vocals), Nat Browner (drums) and Kyle Raquipiso (drums).

Mixing up catchy powerpop with driving indie tinged rock n roll, their debut single, Rock n Roll Friend is an infectious throwback to a time when the likes of The Go-Go's, The Runaways and The Bangles used to rule the airwaves.

You can check out their music here : https://patsysrats.bandcamp.com/ but if vinyl is your preference a 7" is newly available on La-Ti-Da Records http://latidarecords.bigcartel.com/product/patsy-s-rats-rock-n-roll-friend-ltdr027.

Ideal for listening to in the car on a hot summer's day (volume up, window down), this is Rock N' Roll Friend......

The Fuck Ups - G20 Murder

" is this freedom for the free, or state controlled democracy?"

80's style punk rock today from The Fuck Ups who are a band that formed around a decade ago in Irvine, Scotland. There's been numerous line up changes during the course of the last 10 years but they currently feature Baz (vocals/guitar), Bunnit (bass/vocals), Sparky (drums/vocals) and Steven (guitar).

Influenced by the likes of Rise Against, Blitz, Chron Gen, Anti Flag, 4 Skins etc, they're a politically minded outfit that are fiercely anti fascist, anti racist and anti religion.

They've now a bandcamp page and if you click the link you'll find the song featured below..... https://thefuckups2.bandcamp.com/.

In April 2009, during the G20 summit protests in London, newspaper vendor Ian Tomlinson was struck by a policeman whilst on his way home from work. He subsequently died from his injuries and though the constable who hit him, Simon Harwood, was dismissed from the force for gross misconduct, he was found not guilty of manslaughter.

  This is G20 Murder.....

Rebel Flesh - Family Business

Rebel Flesh are from Austin, Texas and feature Jeremiah Ingram (guitar/vocals), Royce (guitar), Chris Dempsey (bass) and Michael Dempsey (drums). They formed towards the end of 2013 and play horror themed punk n roll.

They released an album in 2014 called I have Become The Night which saw them draw comparisons with the likes of The Misfits, Johnny Thunders and The Damned and they followed it in 2015 with Up All Night. There's a few tracks (including the song I'm highlighting today) on Bandcamp  "name your price" https://rebelflesh.bandcamp.com/.  They also contributed the theme tune for a new horror film called The Barn (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3390550/).

From Up All Night, this is Family Business....

IT'S A TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE
AND WE GOTTA GET AWAY
SO WE CAN'T GO BACK FOR HER
WE THOUGHT WE SAW A BODY
WE THOUGHT WE SAW A HEAD
WE THOUGHT WE BETTER RUN AWAY
BEFOR WE WIND UP DEAD
IN A TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE
WELL YOU CAN STAY
ALL NIGHT AND PARTY
BUT THEY'RE NEVER GONNA FIND
YOUR BODY
'CAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW
WELL YOU CAN STAY
ALL NIGHT AND PARTY
BUT THEY'RE NEVER GONNA FIND
THE BODY
AND THERE AINT NO PLACE
THERE AINT NOWHERE TO GO
IT'S A TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.
