Gutterblood - Alienation

Something a little different today that I was recommended by one of the listeners to the show (Cheers Jim!).

Gutterblood (https://www.facebook.com/gutterblood) are from Peebles, Scotland, and they formed in 2019. Their name is a Scottish word for a low person of inferior breeding (one of the rabble). Their music is a fusion of blues, indie, doom, punk and prog. They're a trio who "seize the socio-political climate of the day, incorporating it into the live arena by using samples and heavy, groove driven dynamics." They claim to be a mostly instrumental band but when you check out their debut album you'll see that there's lyrics aplenty (many of them well chosen samples).

That debut album is Self Titled, it was released last December (though the cd version is out on Thurs 16th March) and it's a record you can easily lose yourself in. Their sound brings to mind both Mogwai (rich, classy instrumentation) and Benefits (spoken word monologues of a political nature but less abrasive in tone). For your first listen can I recommend you take yourself away somewhere quiet that you can immerse yourselves in what is a aural and lyrical treat.

The album is available as a name your price download :  https://gutterbloodband.bandcamp.com/album/gutterblood-l-p

This is the opening track, its called Alienation...

"And let me right at the outset define what I mean by Alienation
It's the cry of men who feel themselves the victims of blind, economic forces beyond their control
It's the frustration of the great mass of ordinary people excluded from the processes of decision making
It's the feeling of despair and hopelessness that pervaids people who feel with every justification that they have no real say in shaping or determining there own destinies" (Jimmy Reid)

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times
The punks were pulling on their boots
I was six years old on a picket line and in the evening my mother made me watch the mini series Roots
I got the jist
Well the strike went on for 9 long weeks and they had to sent the army in
Some of them died
The Green goddesses were not fit for purpose and the tinder box lived right up to it's name
Well Christmas came and went, not much of an event
Our family got our picture in the Evening Times
But poverty was respectful then and most people had that wee bit of pride still...
Two years down the line it was 1979
It was the turn of the Clyde and the mines
We were told to 'retrain', 'get on your bikes', 'keep up with the times' Jesus Christ, I left school with a smile and I thought I had guile right up to my YTS
I'll not even mention the job club
With no ships or coal you could work for your dole
You're a wage slave but minus the wage
Not that these tasks were appealing to me, the truth be told

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times
I was pulling my boots on now
But the revolution had long been televised
I accept that I had missed the boat
No frigging in the rigging for me
I was doing all nighters watching the hit man and her and stealing my mothers fags
I'd attend the occasional LPYS meeting but I found it a bit culty and I only really went because there was this girl I fancied that went, when she stopped showing up, so did I
I'd attend the occasional demonstration
But some of my old school friends were now in the BNP
They would try and attack us
And that made me a little bit paranoid

I did find a group of friends eventually and they would drag me to anarchist meetings
But I remember getting called a 'schemie' for turning up with a bag of chips
And pretending to like Discharge was impossible but for the most determined
However I had nowhere else to go and nothing else to do
So I did the best I could to have fun with it

That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang
That's the sound of the men clearing their browser history
That's the sound of the men calling me a libtard
That's the sound of you clapping for the nurses

That's the sound of the soccer mom dropping off her psychos
With an extra clip in their pack lunch box
That's the sound of finding a sense of belonging
Somewhere you don't belong

Some people talk about a mid life crisis
Some people experience lifelong crisis

And that's the sound of the men working on the chain gang

The Fallout - The Times Have Never Changed (Guest Review By Ashley Colman)

Another guest review today, this one by Ashley Colman. He''s a massive fan of  Canadian political 3 piece The Fallout (https://www.facebook.com/TheFalloutToronto/) so as they've just released an excellent new album I thought I'd ask him to say a few words. The album's called The Times Have Never Changed and it's out now as a joint release from Discos Machete (a new label started up by Victor of Brigada Flores Magon fame) and the ever reliable Rebel Time Records...   https://rebeltimerecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-fallout-the-times-have-never-changed-2

  Over to Ash...

The Fallout are angry, passionate and committed to the numerous causes they support, like many a punk band. However, what sets them apart from the pack? TUNES my friends that's what. These political savvy punks have been railing against the tide since 2004 with a handful of releases which thankfully have been made available on their Bandcamp page, remastered, remixed and not to be missed. Also, pay what you want, or free? Nah, scrap free, because we know what work goes into getting underground music out there don't we?

Anyways, what do you get from The Fallout, 15 tracks of pacey, tuneful, fist pumping anthems, with their interpretations of this fucked up world chronicled into the biting lyrics, with Lord Byron's distinctive vocals to the fore. Patty 'O' Lantern (bass) he of Brutal Youth and Class War Kids infamy handles the vocals on 'Can't Take It',  'Invincible', 'Red Light Union', & 'Turn It Down', with him adding a new dimension as well  with his backing vocals throughout this great album. The Class War Kids classic  One Last Struggle is covered within the album.

Comparisons... don't we love 'em. Think of early SLF, Newtown Neurotics and fellow Canadians The Subhumans and your getting there and like the afore-mentioned, TUNES my friends in abundance. File under absolutely essential.

This is the title track, The Times Have Never Changed...

Don’t care about the Bob Dylan you quote
Books you’ve read or poems you wrote
I see suffering I see no hope

The times have never changed
That’s what drove Phil Ochs insane
The times have never changed

Protest songs of ’67
Against a war you never ended
All that posing and pretending

The times have never changed
That’s what drove Phil Ochs insane
The times have never changed

The more things change
The more they stay the same
Happens time and time and time again
All I know for sure is we have endless, endless war
The times have never changed

One thing I don’t understand
From Iraq to Afghanistan
It just keeps happening again and again

The times have never changed
That’s what drove Phil Ochs insane
The times have never changed

Bring the War Home - White Hoods, Red Hats, Black Eyes

Bring The War Home are a revolutionary communist agit-punk three piece from Hamilton, Ontario who's line up features Dael (guitar/backup vocals), Gross Biff (drums) and Martin (bass/vocals). They list amongst their influences Marx, Lenin and Mao and they've recently released a very promising debut Self Titled ep. With songs firing barbs at the bourgeoisie, nazis, those in authority, those who meekly bow down to those in authority and "proud patriots" they're a band in it's embryonic stages but they're very promising so hitch a ride at the beginning of their journey and check them out :   https://bringthewarhome.bandcamp.com/

You can find more info here : https://www.facebook.com/bringthewarhome/

This is the final song on the ep, a topical call to arms to fight the rise of the far right. Racism has no place in any society, especially in these so called enlightened times. As it says in the song, EVERY GENDER EVERY RACE PUNCH A NAZI IN THE FACE.

This is White Hoods, Red Hats, Black Eyes...

Walking down the street one night
Tragic fascist spoof
Deadbeat dads in leather jackets
Bunch of fucking goofs.
Say they're just proud patriots,
That Muslims aren't a race.
They want to scare some immigrants and put them in their place.

Viking bikers on the prowl
Praying to Norse gods.
Feel real tough behind police lines
Hit for hit we like our odds.
We know where they live and work
Yeah we've got them good.
Gonna make sure that their neighbours know there's a Nazi in their neighbourhood.

White hoods, red hats, black eyes.
White hoods, red hats, black eyes.
Better watch your back.
The people will attack.
We'll smash you like it's 1945.

Now here come the cavalry,
The frat-boy reject crew.
Promised not to touch themselves,
Don't know what to do.
Say they're 'Western chauvinists',
We'll get them in the end.
Whiney little Eich-boys, pretending they're Eich-men.

Shitty SA wannabes
In black and yellow shirts.
They've got a secret weapon,
They're so stupid that it hurts.
All of them are incels,
'Cause all of them are creeps.
Grab them by the collar and then twist 'til they're asleep.

White hoods, red hats, black eyes.
White hoods, red hats, black eyes.
Better watch your back.
The people will attack.
We'll smash you like it's 1945.

EVERY GENDER EVERY RACE PUNCH A NAZI IN THE FACE
EVERY GENDER EVERY RACE PUNCH A NAZI IN THE FACE
EVERY GENDER EVERY RACE PUNCH A NAZI IN THE FACE
EVERY GENDER EVERY RACE PUNCH A NAZI IN THE FACE

White hoods, red hats, black eyes.
White hoods, red hats, black eyes.
Better watch your back.
The people will attack.
We'll smash you like it's 1945.

Every time they take a loss
They all turn judge and juror
Turning on each other because
Each wants to be fuhrer
We'll appropriate their banners
Tear up their maple leaves
Bruised bodies and bruised egos will be all that they receive.

The people are united
Organized we'll strike.
Red fists and feet and flagpoles
Will smash up their fourth reich
They celebrate a legacy
Of genocide and theft
We'll make sure that their dying words are: so much for the tolerant left.

White hoods, red hats, black eyes.
White hoods, red hats, black eyes.
Better watch your back.
The people will attack.
We'll smash you like it's 1945.
We'll smash you like it's 1945.
We'll smash you like it's 1945.

The Roughies - Don't Hate The Cops

Political punk from the Bay area today from Oakland, California's The Roughies.

Starting up in 2011 as an acoustic act, they added extra instruments in 2013. Also in 2013 they released their debut ep, What's Your Plan For The Wasteland? The song you'll find below is the title track of their 2nd ep, Don't HateThe Cops and it came out in 2015. You can find both releases "name your price" here :  https://theroughiesrock.bandcamp.com/album/dont-hate-the-cops.

The line up features Patrick Kaufmann (lead vocals/guitar), Marshal "Bronco Bomba" (bass/vocals), Loren "The Wildfire" (drums) and Alex (lead guitar/vocals). Their influences range from The Dead Kennedys, NOFX and Against Me! through to bands like Mountain Goats and Gaslight Anthem. They've an album pencilled in for release this summer so listen out for that.

Follow the law, they're just doing their jobs, Don't Hate The Cops......
