The Suspects - Mind Control

The Suspects were from Washington DC and were a hardcore punk band who formed in 1993. They featured Brian Gayton (vocals), Bryan Harbin (guitar), Chris Condayan (bass) and Kent Stax (drums).

Their classic 1995 debut album Voice Of America was recently remastered by Daniel Husayn and re released jointly by Grave Mistake Records and Six Feet Under Records. To coincide with the release, the original line up reformed to play the Black Cat in Washington.

Blending UK 77 era punk with 80's DC hardcore, Voice Of America is a hard hitting gut punch that stands the test of time. From it, this is Mind Control.....

KLOVER - Our Way

We're the radiation generation When we were born i wish i'd known Mom and daddy got the meat And we got the bone We're undecided and divided Livin' out of control All we ever really wanted Was a place to call our own....

Inquisition - Uproar

A song today from a band who weren't around too long but who's members went on to form a number of other bands including Strike Anywhere, Ann Beretta and River City High.

Inquisition formed in 1991 in Richmond, Virginia by a bunch of high school kids.... Thomas Barnett (vocals), Mark Avery (guitar), Russ Jones (drums) and Leer Baker (bass). Baker left after a year and was replaced by Rob Huddleston.

Their first album, The Broken Songs, came out in 1993 but it was the follow up, 1995's Revolution, I Think It's Called Inspiration that was their piece de resistance. It's a really great passionate and energetic album and you can check it out here : https://a-frecords.bandcamp.com/album/revolution-i-think-its-called-inspiration-af044

* (IF YOU'RE READING THIS ON BLACK FRIDAY, 27/11/15, THE ALBUM, ALONG WITH ALL A-F RECORDS BACK CATALOGUE IS FREE TO DOWNLOAD SO BE QUICK AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A GREAT OFFER!) *

The band went their separate ways after a show with AFI on Sept 8 1996 but there've been occasional reunion shows, one of which was recorded for a live cd/dvd called Uproar : Live And Loud!

Passionate, political punk rock doesn't come much better than this, this is Uproar.....

She said,
"Boy answer the question"
And we've been patiently waiting all our lives
Told me to sit down and shut up all our lives

[Chorus:]
And this is the uproar
Uproar, uproar,
This is the uproar
Uproar, uproar, uproar
This is the uproar
Go!

For the prisoner of conscience
Walking fearing where you tread
Crimes against the people that the government led
Amnesty now for an innocent dread
(Is it) Only for the rich that the poor get bled

[Chorus]

For the mind of my sister fight the one eyed views
Body of my mother torn broken and abused
People in the cities and the streets beating down
Color culture stand together
Make this sound
Make this sound
So won't you make this, make this, make this sound

Because you said,
"Boy answer the question"
And we've been patiently waiting all our lives
Told me to sit down and shut up all our lives
Knocking me out of my head
Into my heart as it's bled
Knocking me out of my head
Into the heart as it's bled, out

Because we sing
An oi oi song
And a unity song

Old conflict put them to bed
Real enemy please show your head
Old conflict put them to bed
Will the real enemy please show your head

Fur - X Offender

Today's song is a cover version of a Blondie classic by a band from New York City called Fur who were together between 1991-1998. Featuring Holly Ramos (vocals/guitar), Danuta Roberts (Gozdziewicz) on bass and a number of drummers including  Peter Klinger and Michael Mc Dermott, they were often likened to a female fronted version of The Ramones (aside from the catchy pop punk tunes, Roberts at one time dated Dee Dee).

They released a couple of singles, 1993's Sex Drive/I'm Not Coming 7" and 1996's Mira Mira. There was also a highly regarded self titled album which came out in 1995 on Blackout! Records and which features the song posted below.

If you're looking for a fuzzed up pop punk classic then look no further, this is X Offender.......

I saw you standing on the corner
You looked so big and super fine
I really wanted to go out with you
So when you smiled, I laid my heart on the line

You read me my rights and then you said
"Let's go" And nothing more
I thought of my nights, and how they were
They were filled with
I know you wouldn't go
You'd watch my heart burst then you'd step in
I had to know, I asked
You just had to

We sat in the night
With my hands cuffed at my side
I look at your life and your style
Wanted nothing more
I know you wouldn't go
You'd watch my heart burst then you'd step in
I had to know, I asked
You just had to

Walking the line, you were a marksman
Told me that law, like wine is ageless, public defender
You had to admit
You wanted the love of a sex offender
I know you wouldn't go
You'd watch my heart burst then you'd step in
I had to know, I asked
You just had to

My vision in blue
I call you from inside my cell
And there at the trial, you were there
With your badge and rubber boots
I think all the time how
I'm going to perpetrate love with you
And when I get out
There's no doubt I'll be sex offensive to you

The Orphans - The Government Stole My Germs CD

The Orphans formed in West Chester, Philadelphia, in the mid 90's and featured Erik Petersen (vocals), Tom Johnsen (guitar), Drew Petersen (bass/vocals), Andrew Baxter (drums) and Joe D'Orazio (trumpet).

At the time, high school student Erik Petersen, says he was angry at everything and that screaming in a punk band was a great way to relieve some of that anger. The band were very much a diy, anarchic outfit whose only merchandise was spray painted stencil patches. As far as releases go there was just some tapes and a 7" ep (1995's Anthems For Doomed Youth).

By 2000 Petersen had moved onto form Mischief Brew but there's been occasional Orphans shows since then and in 2004 a compilation of remastered versions of Orphans material was released on Fistolo Records. You can check it out here : https://mischiefbrew.bandcamp.com/album/raise-the-youth

This is The Government Stole My Germs CD.......

The government wants to overthrow it's subjects
GOP has issued secret codes
CIA has put them on our stop signs
FBI is tapping in our phones
Billy Bob's the slick one
But we've seen his dishonest smile to the crowds
I praise the press, i surf the internet
Hope i'm not revealed as a coward
Got my gun i got my flag
Believe everything i've read in all the mags
So paranoid and ready to kill
Shootin' kids from my windowsill
Insane, Demented, Paranoid, Pissed
But i'm gonna have to deal with it
Cause reform is bloodshed
Reform is hate
Reform is fear
Reform because
The government stole my germs CD
I sell my peace by forcing hate
The violence on the TV screen
I believe segments of hard copy
No one else knows where i've been
I'm just a nazi with old glory
Turning it into a confederate shroud
I cause anarchy and comfort
I gotta make my buddies proud
Got my beer and civil war mind
Blast from the past with much more lies
Seen as criminals not as us
True pacifists don't suck
The government stole my germs CD

Archie and The Pukes - I Got Worms

"It sounds like something from a sci-fi movie, but worms really can enter the digestive system and live there like parasites, feeding off the body.  Intestinal worms, round worms, tapeworms and toxacara worms can all cause a loss of appetite, nausea, tiredness, a painful or even distended tummy, fever, coughing, and in the case of the most common worm, the threadworm, an uncomfortable itch at night around the anus and/or the vulva. Once the worms have entered the body they start to lay eggs. The eggs hatch and the worms themselves work their way into the intestine, where more eggs are laid. Threadworms live for about six weeks. In rare cases, the worms can then move round the body and enter other organs such as the lungs or even the brain, in which case the condition is much more serious......"

I really hope that most of you haven't heard today's song before because if that's the case then you're in for a treat.

Archie And The Pukes are everything a good punk band should be, fast, loud, raw, obnoxious and snotty as fuck. Some punk bands write about social or political issues, these guys however were more likely to bemoan the fact that they had worms in their ass! When your singer's called Mike Puke, it's probably an indication that you aren't going to be the most serious or pc band around.

The trio were from Cincinnati and also featured Jeff on bass and Aaron on drums, As far as I'm aware they only released the one record, a 7" ep titled Straight Edge People Suck, which came out in 1995 on Centsless Productions and was "recorded on Andy's recorder, using Andy's equipment, in Andy's basement, under the influence of Andy's beer."

Compared to the likes of The Germs, The Lewd and The Pagans, this is really awesome stuff and it's a shame their light burned out so soon.

You can find this song on a new album called Destroy All Art which has recently been put together by Rock And Roll Parasite Records and it features "17 under-the-radar punk hits from the 90's."  There'll be more from this great album featured soon and if you want to check it out head over to Sorry State Records for more details : http://www.sorrystaterecords.com/products/various-destroy-all-art-12

Bomb Squadron - If Im Gonna Die

Mid 90's street punk today from Reading, Pennsylvania. Forming in 1994, Bomb Squadron were a 5 piece which originally consisted of Ian (vocals), Ben Empty (bass), Andy Mehos (guitar), Chris (guitar) and Jarrod (drums) though tensions between Ian and Andy led to Fat Dave taking over on vocals. It wasn't long after this before they imploded after a series of drunken and violent shows, supposedly there were times when they couldn't even manage to complete any of the songs that they attempted, other times however, whilst slightly less under the influence, they were one of the best bands around.

They broke up in 1998, according to Jarrod "Dave and I played a lot of shows, did a lot of travelling, we got sick of the band, some of the other members, some of their ideas, we just weren't happy with what we were doing."  Fat Dave and Jarrod went on to  play together in The Virus.

Their discography (3 eps : Another Generation Lost, More Bad News and Smash Hits) were collected together and released by Doppelganger Records on the collection Another Generation Found 1994-1998.

Featuring original vocalist Ian, this was originally released on their debut ep and is possibly their best song. If I'm Gonna Die........

fuck you......
Gonna get some cider and I'm gonna drink it down
I'm gonna drink until I pass out on the ground
I wanna drink every night and every day
And I'll never join you fucking AA
If I'm gonna die
I won't do it sober X2
I'm gonna drink every day of my life
Its the only way I've got to deal with my strife
And I don't give a fuck about what you think
Just get out of my way cuz I wanna drink
If I'm gonna die .
I won't do it sober X2
Now I'm happy cuz I got my beer
Sitting at home and listening to FEAR
If you don't like to drink
Then tough shit for you
If it was up to me
Thats all I'd ever do
If I've got to die
I won't do it sober X4

Devil Dogs - Baby I'm A King

Top notch punk n roll today from New York City garage punks Devil Dogs. Following the demise of Rat Bastards in 1989, Andy Gortier (guitar, vocals)  and Steve Baise (bass, vocals) got together with drummer Paul Corio. Despite several line up changes along the way (Corio was replaced on drums by Dave Ari who was replaced himself in '91 by Mighty Joe Vincent, Baise eventually moved on to play in different bands, including one featuring members of Turbonegro) they released a string of rocking albums during the early to mid 90's. Their first album was originally designed to be a Rat Bastards release (produced by Billy Childish) but ended up a self titled Devil Dogs debut.
Taken from the 1995 compilation 30 Sizzling Slabs! this is the coolest song on the block, it's called Baby I'm A King.......

Nobodys - Bring it Back

"Shoot them and hang them and make them cry, I believe in an eye for an eye..."

Not all the bands featured herein are deep thinking socially concious types

Hailing from Colorado Springs, porno loving, tongue in cheek pop punk band Nobodys formed in 1993 and announced themselves with an ep titled Perfect. 1996 saw a Joe Queer produced debut album, Short Songs For Short Attention Spans, which brought them to the attention of a wider audience. The following year they did it again with another classic, this one called The Smell Of Victory (this time the producer was Warren Fitzgerald of The Vandals). 1998 saw 2 albums, Generation XXX and a collection of their early, hard to find stuff which they snappily entitled Greatasstits. They continued on until the early 2000's before they went their seperate ways, although they have toured  sporadically since. Hopefully one day we'll get new material but until then, here's a track off 1995's Politically Incorrect ep, this is Bring It Back....

Gaunt - Weekend

"They were electrifying, they were totally real. They always just went out and did it"
Bruce McGuire (Warner Bros.)

From Columbus, Ohio, and formed in 1991, Gaunt were a pop punk band. At least that's what it says on Wikipedia, but don't let that lull you into thinking they're another band who worshipped at the alter of the Ramones, or were ploughing a similar field to Green Day or even Blink 182. They rocked just that little bit harder than your average pop punk outfit (as the song below will show). Led by guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Jerry Wick the original line up also featured Eric Barth on bass as well as Jeff Regensburger on drums, they were soon joined by guitarist Jim Weber (though he quickly left to concentrate on The New Bomb Turks) and by Jovan Karcic. They recorded 5 albums and several singles before being dropped by their label, Warner Brothers, eventually led to them splitting in 1998. Tragically, in 2001, Jerry Wick was struck by a car and killed whilst cycling home. He was only 33. From their 1995 album, I Can See Your Mom From Here, this is Weekend.......

Sicko - Bad year

Today's song used to be the ringtone for the alarm clock on my phone. Formed in 1991, Seattle 3 piece Sicko released 4 albums and a handful of singles and eps in their 10 years or so together. Renowned for their fast upbeat songs this is my favourite, taken from their 1995 album Laugh While You Can Monkey Boy it's called Bad Year.....

ps.... Shook Ones did a very good cover of this song on their split ep with Easel
