Top 10 "unknown but fucking amazing" new bands from Australia chosen by Ronny Van Dyk

Earlier this week I was contacted by Ronny Van Dyk who told me he and his wife, Jen Lysle-van Dyke, had earlier this year started up a diy label called Wreckless Enterprise. Based in Wollongong, Australia, it's aim was to "shine a spotlight on all the unknown but fucking amazing punk bands that exist in every nook and cranny of most towns."  As I've been saying for a while now, Australia is churning out so much great punk music at the moment that straight away I asked Ronny if he'd select a Top 10 of some of his favourite new bands and being a cool and enthusiastic guy he readily agreed so that's what you're getting today.

First though, if you're interested in discovering killer Aussie bands that you might otherwise overlook, here's the Wreckless Enterprise Facebook page :   https://www.facebook.com/wrecklessenterprise/

Already the label has released an excellent compilation titled Short Fuse Volume 1. 12 short punk bangers that fit nicely onto a red vinyl 7" and are also available digitally.   https://wrecklessenterprise.bandcamp.com/releases

I'll play a couple of tracks on the Just Some Punk Songs show later today (8pm gmt)   https://www.facebook.com/events/2388444994747771/

Short Fuse Volume 2 is coming soon and will feature another selection of exciting unknowns.

And now to Ronny's Top 10....

1. The Vee Bees - Park Bog
from the lp Yeah Nah, Yeah Nah
https://theveebees.bandcamp.com/album/yeah-nah-yeah-nah These guys fit perfectly into the resurgence of Aussie ‘Bogan punk’ with accents broader than the Sahara and humour to match. Singing about all the important things like Public Loos and Drive-through bottle shops, the VeeBees are a big and fun live draw.

2. Legal Aliens - It’s A Trap
from the ep Welcome To The Business State

https://legalalienssydney.bandcamp.com/album/welcome-to-the-business-state-e-p High energy, young and angry, full of attitude, these guys are the real deal. Pint sized front woman is a dynamo, right up in your face and she does not back down. Wild, chaotic and exciting shows.

3. The Owen Guns- Cheetoh Hitler

New to the scene, political, antagonistic and offensive to anyone with even the slightest right wing sympathies. An aural assault with a clever sharp tongued frontman, often humourous.

4. Shrimpwitch - Leerers
from the lp Give Me The Itch
https://shrimpwitch.bandcamp.com/album/gave-me-the-itch

Darlings of the Melbourne femme-punk scene, this two piece sound like the Cramps, the White Stripes and Nina Hagen got together for a threesome. Unique vocals and lyrics really set these guys apart from the pack.

5. RMFC (Rock Music Fan Club) - The Clue
from the ep Hive vol 2
https://rockmusicfanclub.bandcamp.com/album/hive-vol-2

This trio, led by a teenage drummer/vocalist, are a big part of a new tidal wave of very young punk-influenced bands doing the circuit at the moment. This wave have their own thing going on but are very much informed by previous waves of punk, garage and grunge. Great live act!

6. Loose - Crackin Up
from the S/T ep
Another new band on the scene, informed as much by Detroit-style punk which has always been a massive deal in Australia, as the glam and hard rock of the early 70s. Wonderful raw guitar sound on this one, and classic grizzled and weary vocal styling.

7. The Not Nots - Default

https://thenotnots.bandcamp.com/
Probably one of the more unusual bands on the circuit, this ‘art punk’ band from Newcastle have made their mark with quirky off-timings and often dischordant guitar parts, combined with good strong harmonies and very tight playing. Hard to categorise, but somewhere between Talking Heads, Hüsker Du and perhaps the Pixies.

8. Froth Dogs - Meat Pie
from the lp She’ll Be Right
What can we say, the absolute embodiment of the Bogan punk resurgence rears it’s head again with this young trio, who almost exclusively sing about food. Larrikins on stage and off, there is no line between the performance and real life for these blokes, this is not an act, this is the real deal. Unpretentious, funny, you’d have to be dead not to enjoy these guys on some level. A band to watch.

9. Das Asps - Christmas Dissmissmas
Really hard to find any info on this band, but happily stumbled across them on Facebook. Some say they’re from Dresden but I’m 99 percent certain they would have to be Australian given the accent. Manic, fast paced old school punk stylings, a bit of Cramps in there. Crazy track.

10. The Leftards - Fuck Religion
Only 18 months on the scene, political as hell, with a couple of eps under their belts, these guys have made a big impact on the east coast with a stage show quite unlike any other. Imagine an escaped psyche patient having a meth rage tantrum with a basket full of toys and instruments, a chaotic and delightfully shambolic spectacle.

Top 10 Songs Chosen By Jonzip McNeil (The Zips)

A Top 10 today selected by Jonzip Mcneil, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist with veteran Glasgow band The Zips. Along with Brian Jackson, Joe Jaconelli and Phil Mullen, Jon founded the band back in 1978 and during their initial run before splitting in 1981 they became regulars on the John Peel show...I'm sure some of you still own their Take Me Down and Radioactivity singles. With punk audiences being tempted away by new romantics and ska the band went their seperate ways but European bootleg interest in their back catalogue led to them reforming in 2001 and they've been pretty prolific ever since. The current line up sees Jon and Phil augmented by by Fred Ex and Buddy Poor.

They've released 4 albums and numerous singles & eps. Earlier this year they celebrated their 40th anniversary with a new single and I featured it here :  http://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2018/11/the-zips-iou.html

For more info on the band check here : http://www.thezips.co.uk/biog/
https://www.facebook.com/thezipsuk/

When choosing their Top 10's some subjects pick a bunch of songs that people may not have heard before in the hope of getting those songs out to a wider audience. Jon has gone down the route of "here's 10 absolute classics.."   As you can see, he's still loves the songs that he grew up with and he's still quite partial to The Clash.  Just to add a little spice to the selection I've tried to choose videos that are either live or tv appearances...

  1)  THE CLASH - Complete Control

  2)  THE CLASH - Safe European Home

  3)  THE CLASH - Stay Free

  4)  THE CLASH - Clampdown

  5)  THE CLASH - Rock The Casbah

  6)  SEX PISTOLS - Anarchy In The UK

  7)  THE JAM - In The City

  8)  THE DAMNED - Neat Neat Neat

  9)  THE STRANGLERS - No More Heroes

 10)  THE SKIDS - Into The Valley

Top 10 Songs Chosen By Joe Atom (The Atoms)

A top 10 for you today chosen by Joe Atom, vocalist and guitarist with Derby band The Atoms.
https://www.facebook.com/theatomsuk/
https://theatomsuk.bandcamp.com/

Great songs and plenty of commentary. I asked Joe to compile a Top 10 at 15 minutes past midnight on Friday, just as he was about to head off to bed. Being suitably enthused he made a late night of it, armed himself with alcohol ("I was going to go to bed shortly but now Im gonna get the Johnny Walker and give this my best........Jesus its nearly 5am") and came up with the following. Thanks Joe...

1) Angry Samoans - Lights Out

No other song could kick this off for me. Its thee perfect punk song. Dont argue with me cos if you do? You are wrong. Some things are opinion but this is cold hard fact. Short, fast, catchy and a kind of jingle telling the vapid, bland hipsters of their time to grab a fork and stick it into your brain via your eye socket, as it's the cool thing to do. Not enough songs about that I'd say.

2) Lightyear - Life Jacket, Water Wings

I spent years getting messed up, naked and pissing in each others mouths and ruining peoples house partys with these guys in the late 90s / early 2000s. Tho I hate pretty much all Ska-punk / Ska-core these guys did so much more with the second album. Always liked Chas' way of blending up this mix of reflective sadness and this gutteral, manic 'so fuck you!' lyrics and delivery. Chuck into that about 100 refrences to Derby and it gets me every time. This song gets me cos despite what it means to the band, to me its about reflecting on the best time of your life without the realisation that you're still in that moment. Jesus, Im feeling Emo tonight.

3) King Khan And BBQ Show - I'll Be Loving You

A few years back I nearly lost my love for music. Sure I liked playing gigs and playing my same old hit-list but my inspiration and passion was gone. It had been years since I heard a new band that I just went mad for. A bunch of good bands I was happy to listen to but nothing that gave me that 'holy shit!' factor I got all the time when I was in my teens. Then I heard this song and it was like a huge slap in the face. Picked up everything they did and all Mark Sultans solo stuff. He has the second best voice I've eaver heard. Some days thee best. It's a true rock and roll haunting voice without it sounding like some bland, trad covers band. They've made songs loads better than this but this is special to me as it jump started my passion for music. Plus when I realised that they are a 2 peace and one of them sIngs lead vocals, plays guitar AND drums at the same time? I'd sell my soul to pretty much anything for half of that talent.

4) PANIC - Her Familys On Drugs

I think I was given Gremlin Generation by paying £2 to get into a early Lightyear show? Ether way, before my massive erection for Ramones, before my HUMONGOUS lob-on for Dickies, Queers, Screeching Weasel, Undertones and Buzzcocks I got this album. My pocket money barely got me to the music shop let alone a free website with all the music in the world on it so when I got an album, even if I didnt like it at first, it was pretty much the new music I was stuck with for a few weeks for better or worse, and at first I could hardly stand this album. I was a kid. A bloody idiot. I had no appreciation for a stripped back 3 piece. I wanted everything to be changing every 2 seconds like Bob by Nofx or all that 'new fangled' oompah, ska-punk, shooting idiots in a barrel bullshit. But £4 a week couldn't get me that good, mainstream, easy listening Californian junk. It got me cheap booze and a free cd at a dive bar gig. And over a few boring as fuck weeks of selling out of date crisps to school mates and the ocasianal punch in the face from some posh, football twat I grew to love this album. I partly blame it for the mess I'm in today.

5) Captain Kaiser - 12 Years A Captain

To understand what I'm about to say you need to understand a lot of the time I'm an emotional mess of a person. A kind of shitty hermit that is at his best alone at home with my amazingly understanding girlfriend and my like minded dog and cats. So when I tell you that when I see a band that I really like I ether want to dance like a twat or watch them so intensely that I have to stop myself from crying like a little bitch. I hide it from EVERYONE but its true. SO we're in Belgium and Ricky from Priceduifkas tells us his friends are opening up for a gig we're playing. No big deal. About 15 people in a room but we're just happy we fixed the van and made it in time. Then these guys start and FUCK ME the singer grabs you. Its so easy for bands to fake emotions to fit a sound they want and to pretend they are something they aren't but I feel I can see through that so easy. Sasha has this draw that makes him look like he's about to break down at any moment and I hung onto every word I could make out. Easily the best new band Ive seen in years.

6) FYP - All Grown Up

Another massively under rated band from punk history. Went on to be the equally amazing Toys That Kill but finding Toilet Kids Bread at the same time I discoverd Crass was great. From feeling all this 'political rage' (blah) and taking everything so seriously to a song like this that still makes me want to bounce off the wall and lyirically means a million times more than Chomski's discography. *the booze is REALLY starting to kick in and the video after FYP is Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps. Its making me all emo. Im fighting it off and it wont make the cut but you know. Its a good song god damn it!

7) The Bellfuries - Letter To My Maybe Baby (demo) NOT ALBUM VERSION

THIS GUY has the best voice in the world. Probably ever. His lyrics are perfect. Ive been lucky enough to see them live a few times and we cover a Bellfuries' song (Looser). Like King Khan and BBQ Show this band really made me fall in love with music again. If you dont know this band then please just go listen to all of it.

8) KISS - Room Service

IF NO PART OF YOU HAS A PLACE IN YOUR HEART FOR KISS THEN YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR BORING ARSE. My only regret in life is not getting into KISS sooner. Whenever you feel anxiety or simply like you need a new Propagandhi record or your so called friends won't think your 'woke' enough? Get youtube out, type in 'heavens on fire' and watch the video. Watch some live 75 / 78 KISS and remind your self why you loved music in the first place. THEN check put the sweet Animalized live gig on youtube. Its like the greatest party on earth if the greatest party on earth was having 4 huge dicks slap you in the face for about 2 hours. WHICH IT IS. And this barely heard banger is just as dumb and down right awsome as any pop-punk song.

9) Billy Bragg - Like Soldiers Do

When I first heard this I thought it was just a song about war. After years of working in factorys in small villages this song came on my playlist and I realised its about small town racism and how people just follow the same dogmatic bullshit handed down from the bored, hateful nutters that came before them.

10) Priceduifkes - I.K.A.W.

Loved them for years. The best thing from Belgium INCLUDING the beer. To me it's a gut punching unity song AND a Star Wars song so it wins for me.

Top 10 Japanese Punk Songs Chosen By Grim Deeds

No Stranger to Just Some Punk Songs, Grim Deeds has an extensive back catalogue of quirky pop punk delights  https://grimdeeds.bandcamp.com/  and he interviews some of his favourite songwriters on his blog https://grimdeeds.blogspot.com/2018/09/jeff-gammill.html

He's also previously chosen his Top 10 songs :  https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2016/03/top-10-songs-chosen-by-grim-deeds.html and allowed me to conduct one of my rare interviews     https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2017/06/interview-with-grim-deeds.html

He's a very accomodating guy and very passionate about music so when I heard him chatting on The Dummy Room (https://thedummyroom.podbean.com/e/the-dummy-room-19-hangin-with-mr-deeds/) enthusing about his love of Japanese pop punk bands I had to pause the interview and fire off a message asking him to put together a Top 10 of his favourites. I was confident of a positive response but surprised by how quickly it came. Within seconds He'd replied "Sweet! I'd love to do it. I'll work on it today." And sure enough he was as good as his word so without further ado here's 10 top tunes as recommended by Grim Deeds...

Konnichiwa and HAILS! I spend a lot of my time wishing I was back in Japan. The Japanese scene is exploding with great bands right now. Their enthusiasm and sincerity is only matched by their songwriting skills and tight musicianship. Here are some of the best and brightest going right now!

10. The Ham Ham Hamburgers - Popball                                                                       Pure pop punk fun with no pretension or gimmicks. Well, they do like to eat hamburgers!

9. The Plum Crazys - Hey Little Coupe                                                                           Japan's premiere Ramonescore band. Danny Plum Crazys is the real deal! Japanese Dee Dee Ramone.

8. Felix! (The Band) - Pop Punk Records                                                                         Super tight and catchy pop punk with an original flavor. These guys rule!

7. The Hathaways -  I'm The One Playing Dragon Quest                                                 Keita, Daisuke, and Hiro are the main guys now and their songwriting is evolving into something even more current and exciting - but they will always know how to write a satisfying pop punk tune! I miss you guys!

6. The Nerdy Jugheads - Anything Just For You                                                           This band is incredible live and their records are all super tight and huge sounding. I consider them to be the TBR of the East! Yoshi is the man and all the guys play super tight and fast - fastest downstrokes ever?

5. STUPID PLOTS - What Did Change?                                                                                    Shogo is an original punk rocker! His raw, energetic, melodic songs are about as sincere and direct as it gets. His DIY attitude and community spirit is awesome. His daughter Sakura is amazingly talented songwriter as well!

4. The CCS - I'm Gonna Fall                                                                                           Yusuke Ogane has the soul of power pop! These guys really know how to craft excellent songs. They are top tier Japanese punk/power pop.

3. The Hum Hums - Battle Line                                                                                     Incredible talent here, and it really shows! The Hum Hums have the best harmonies, the catchiest songs, and the most timeless style. Incredible to see live, and always a satisfying listen.

2. Pelotan - Abracadabra                                                                                                     This is pure pop perfection, with so many great influences incorporated into a very professional and tight package. The songs are almost too catchy! A great band with a truly impressive, time-tested sound.

1. Shonen Knife - Jump Into The New World                                                                     They may not be as big in their home country of Japan, but Shonen Knife still maintains a huge international following after over 30 years of creating catchy rock music and touring the globe. They are truly inspirational! Naoko is one of my favorite songwriters of all time - a true original.

Top 10 Songs Chosen By Thomas Stubgaard (Tommy And The Rockets)

A top 10 today chosen by Thomas Stubgaard who's the vocalist, guitarist and bassist for Danish power pop legends Tommy And The Rockets. Previously in both The Lingertones and The Hitchcocks, Tommy commented "Man it's hard to pick 10 songs from all the good songs that are out there. I probably forgot about some, this will have to do though. I was at odds over whether to compile a top 10 list of only punk songs, or just pick whatever I felt like. I chose the latter."

https://tommyandtherockets.bandcamp.com/

https://www.facebook.com/tommyandtherockets/

1)  THE RAMONES - SHE'S THE ONE

It may not be my favorite Ramones song (it's amongst the top 5 though), but it's the best music video I've ever seen. So raw. So much energy. Johnny is such a bad-ass. No-one has ever looked cooler on stage than him. The mean sneer, the low slung Mosrite guitar, the posture, the relentless downstrokes, the perfect "uniform", and last but not least, the perfect haircut :-) There's no denying that The Ramones is my all time favorite band, and that hasn't changed since I started listening to them at age 10. They're the blueprint for everything that's cool.

2)  JOAN JETT - YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT

Joan Jett is the coolest chick in rock 'n' roll, period. No-one even comes remotely close. I've recorded a cover of this particular song for an upcoming split 7" with The Dahlmanns.

3)  TEENAGE BOTTLEROCKET - I FOUND THE ONE

A somewhat newer band, but they have a lot of the same ingredients The Ramones had in terms of songwriting and performance. Totally stellar albums all of them. Great songwriting, great musicians, great attitude. I've been lucky enough to see them twice when "Total" came out.

 4)  THE DAHLMANNS - FIREBALL

It's crazy to think that both The Dahlmanns and The Yum Yums originate from the same little town in Norway. Both powerpop at it's absolute best.

5)  THE YUM YUMS - SUGAR RUSH

This song has some amazingly great hooks. Morten (leadsinger and main man) is an outstanding songwriter.

6)  AIRBOURNE - RUNNIN' WILD

I have to include Airbourne on this list. They made one of the best debut albums of all time if you ask me. That album is crazy good. Killer production, killer songs, killer band! I've seen them a handful of times live, and they're one of the best live bands on the planet. Joel (frontman) is Angus Young and Bon Scott blended into one.

7)  NICK LOWE - HEART OF THE CITY

Nick Lowe joined by Dave Edmunds, Billy Bremner, and Terry Williams, so in essense this is Rockpile. Don't be surprised if this songs ends up on a future Tommy And The Rockets release :-)

8)  CHUCK BERRY - YOU CAN'T CATCH ME

Chuck was punk before there was punk.

9)  AC/DC - TOUCH TOO MUCH

It's a shame they haven't made a truly great album since 1981, but all the stuff they did with Bon Scott and the two first albums with Brian Johnson all rank high in my book.

10)  THE RAVEONETTES - LAST DANCE

By far my favorite band from Denmark. Sune has a knack for writing catchy songs. I love the fact that all their albums are so different, but still sound like The Raveonettes. It's the total opposite of The Ramones. With The Ramones I wish all their albums sounded like Rocket To Russia, but that wouldn't be right with The Raveonettes.

Top 10 Songs Chosen By Sarah Williams (Shout Louder webzine)

There's not been a Top 10 for a while so this week I'll be posting two. The first one has kindly been chosen by Sarah Williams. From Manchester, Sarah's definitely into her music, not only has she seen around 150 different bands already in 2018 she also has her own webzine, Shout Louder.

https://shout-louder.com/
https://www.facebook.com/shoutlouderpunk/
https://twitter.com/shoutlouderpunk
https://www.instagram.com/shoutlouderzine/
https://shout-louder.com/category/podcast/

With the introductions complete I'll hand you over to Sarah. There doesn't appear to be videos to all the songs but we'll link to them as best we can....

Top 10 Punk Songs feels like an intimidatingly wide remit, so for simplicity I’ve chosen to select ten punk songs that I’m obsessing over right this second.

Over the years, I’ve been a fan of a variety of different punk subgenres and we cover the whole range at my webzine, www.shout-louder.com, however currently I’m really on a melodic hardcore bender. My passion lies in the urgency, the hooky melodies, layers of guitar and sheer wealth of skill that goes into creating it. That combination may not appeal to all punk fans, particularly those into the more ‘traditional’ punk, but there’s a thriving DIY skate-punk scene in Europe that’s just begging to be discovered. Along with that, I’m really into my melodic punk with dark lyrics and gruff vocals right now, especially anything that’s catchier than chlamydia.

Here are my current 10 punk songs to obsess over:

Darko - Lifeblood

Released last year, Darko’s album Bonsai Mammoth cemented their position as the best melodic hardcore band in the UK. Standout tracks for me include Lifeforms and I Should Have Taken That Left Turn At Albuquerque, however Lifeblood is one of the tracks that made me realise there’s more to this band than shreddy hi-octane fast punk. It’s a thoughtful polemic on the subject of work that they’ve recently made a great new video for.

The Burnt Tapes - Things Get Weird

The DIY scene’s answer to emotional behemoths like Iron Chic and Polar Bear Club, The Burnt Tapes have invented an irresistible take on sad punk. Things Get Weird is this band at their gritty, melodic best, showcasing their signature dual gruff vocals and an unmatched capacity for evocative, gut-wrenching lyrics. They’re poised to explode this year: get on the bandwagon now.

Goodbye Blue Monday - Take Your Pills

This is the second track from a glorious EP about bipolar disorder from Scottish gravelly pop-punks Goodbye Blue Monday. When I first got my hands on this I listened to it 10 times on repeat; it’s a lively little banger. Graham Lough is a sad-punk songwriting genius. “Choke ‘em all fucking down.” Hands down the best thing you’ll hear all year.

Youth Avoiders - Ghostland

I saw Youth Avoiders in January and was absolutely blown away. Live, it came across like Descendents dallying in hardcore - tight, energetic and heavy as hell. On record it’s a slightly cleaner but nonetheless a frantic, sonically mesmerising experience. They’re Parisian and I’m literally begging people to book them in the UK at the moment - so far there’s one show in Brighton on June 22nd and one in Hastings on December 1st. More please!

A Wilhelm Scream - Boat Builders

To say that I’m obsessed with Partycrasher at the moment would be a significant understatement. I literally spent 24 embarrassing hours repeatedly drunk-singing the chorus this weekend, it’s that firmly lodged in my head. Far from just a rad melodic hardcore band, these guys are technical wizards with inspiring lyrics. In a bit of a personal wet dream-made-reality scenario, they’re touring the UK with Darko in June, including an appearance at Polite Riot festival down at the New Cross Inn on June 24th.

Polar Bear Club - Hollow Place

There is a brutal lack of hope in this song, which appeals to me in the deepest, darkest kind of way. I feel like Polar Bear Club speak to my soul in a way that other bands can’t and the guitars on each song kill me every time. If you’re not familiar with Polar Bear Club, they’re an American band that play hooky post-hardcore who are now sadly on hiatus. These are songs that you can lose yourself in, so a girl can still dream on seeing them live one day.

Call Me Malcolm - There’s No ‘I’ In Apocalypse

The new Call Me Malcolm album I Was Broken When You Got Here is getting a lot of well-deserved hype at the moment. They’ve taken ska punk and perfected it, throwing in a dose of anxiety and depression to keep it modern. It was an instant hit at Shout Louder HQ and is due for repetition all summer.

Triple Sundae - Fabricated

This will be a winning discovery for fans of The Menzingers. London’s Triple Sundae have killed it with their stupendous EP Peace Of Mind, but this is my top tune on it. I had bloody lovely time shouting along to it at the record release show and I can’t wait for them to make a full album now.

Forever Unclean - Words

I’m a big fan of Danish pop/skate/indie-punks Forever Unclean so I was seriously excited to hear a new tune from them. It doesn’t hurt that it’s even grittier and more Gnarwolves-esque than their other recent material. Like everything they release, it’s catchy with gripping, fake-messy guitar work. Enjoy.

PMX - Another Day

This is a band that I’ve loved for a long time, but I got a bit re-obsessed with this year. It’s pretty rare to see these strapping Scottish lads down South, but I’ve managed to catch them four times so far this year and I’m hoping they’ll treat us to some more epic shows if they’re not too busy recording their new album. They’re masters of tight, technical melodic hardcore, buoyed by Chic’s clean, soaring vocal, yet another staggering hub of songwriting talent.

Like what you heard, or want to read more of my semi-inebriated ramblings? Come check out my webzine over at www.shout-louder.com. We’re a music zine for punks who don’t like paper cuts, covering all kinds of genres in a personal, off-hand style. We’ve even just started a new podcast, if that’s your bag.

In the meantime, I’ll see you down the front!
