Pleaser (https://www.facebook.com/pleaserhey/) are Suo Fei (guitar/vocals), Annie Marie Nyvold (guitar/vocals), Olle Bergholz (bass) & Oliver Nehammer (drums), a "cute tough punk" band from Copenhagen.
Going off the evidence provided by songs that are already available, this is a band that plays with joyful abandon. Just check out the vocals on my pick of the bunch. There's just that certain something that hits my sweet spot. This is Hey Girl...
Trinidad and Tobago probably isn't the first place that comes to mind when you're thinking of great punk rock bands but that's where Anti-Everything (https://www.facebook.com/antieverythingtt) hail from.
They've been around for a decade and a half now. You may have caught them on their recent UK tour (which included an appearance at the Manchester Punk Festival of which Chris Oliver commented "My highlights include southern-Caribbean band Anti Everything, who communicate the anti-fascist and anti-globalisation message with an exceptional mix of laser-pointed rage, powerful music and thoughtful persuasion").
They've also recently released a blistering new album titled True Love. It's 11 bursts of energetic hardcore that not only has something to say but brings steel drums to the punk rock party. You can check it out here : https://antieverything.bandcamp.com/album/true-love
This is the opening track. It starts off in a restrained fashion before bursting in to glorious noise. It's called Crime Factory Model...
Now listen up my friends, sit down, together we go tell a story Of how the nation came to be corrupted and modelled on a factory It gets set up in communities, and fueled by political means To produce money, violence, and power, in this colony
Keep people in destitution, no support or intervention Contracts are exchanged for votes and mobilisation The profit is an input into criminal operations As gangs displace the role of community organisation
Mass produce human suffering To commodify civil suffrage There’s no space for human dignity In the nationalised crime factory
It is in d party’s interest, to keep yuh in dependence We can come into power on a platform of vengeance Capitalise on retribution, rather than offer solution Because solving this problem breaks the very market we rely on
Ba da da da da dam die die We’re all gonna die die die die Ba da da da da dam die die Sans Humanité
W.O.M.B.A.T (https://www.facebook.com/waste.of.money.brains.and.time) are from Melbourne and feature a line up of Harrison McGregor- Porcaro (Bass/Vocals), Zoe Hammond (Lead Guitar), Lachlan McGregor-Porcaro (Rhythm Guitar) & Micheal Haynes (Drums). Their name stands for waste.of.money.brains.and.time
They released a debut ep last November titled Inbrace
Unfortunately I missed it at the time but happily French label Idiotape Records have just released a cassette version (which this time around I haven't missed).
Being a sucker for Philadelphia trio Dark Thoughts I had to highlight this cover of a track from their 2016 debut album. Dark Thought's version (https://dark-thoughts.bandcamp.com/track/identity-crisis) finishes abruptly as the band race straight into the next song. The W.O.M.B.A.T version is equally as impressive but has a proper fade out. This is Identity Crisis...
Foxy (https://www.facebook.com/foxybandusa) are a female fronted melodic punk band from Orange County who've just released a new album titled Tonight Tonight. The line up of the band is LP (Vocals), Greg Antista (Guitar), Stu West (Bass) & Richie Mendez (Drums).
The album will bring to mind the likes of The Runaways and The Donnas. It's catchy as fuck and it rocks. I played a track on the show a few weeks ago (Rock And Roll Crime) and it pretty much brought the house down. Happily it's not the album's only "smash hit."
The Model Workers (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100039871304012) are a band I played on the latest Just Some Punk Songs show and I think I mentioned they were from the north east of England. Having researched a little more, I don't think that's the case, the band I was thinking of were called Model Workers and they released a 7" in 1981 titled Cry.
This trio (Dink vocals/guitar, Dazza B bass/backing vocals & Chris E drums/backing vocals) are also from the UK, I think from Leicester, Devon & Banbury, but despite being around for over a decade I think they're a different band (although as is often the case, I'm winging it a bit here!).
Anyway, the important bit. They recently released a 7 track debut album titled Disaster Punk. The opening track (the one I played on the show) is titled Look At The State and it pretty much sums up the band's raison d'être. They sing about what's going on around them, both politically and personally. The album's old school and honest and you can check it out here : https://open.spotify.com/album/7v62N1XqJc9pTAkD0smgFk
This song deals with climate change and the rising of the oceans, it's called Surf Song...
They're back today with a taster for their upcoming album A Rope For You. It'll be available next month on vinyl (300 copies, 100 of them in orange) and digital via Take The City Records and you can pre order it here : https://takethecityrecords.bandcamp.com/album/pre-order-a-rope-for-you-lp
It's described as "10 new songs will delight fans of English punk like SLAUGHTER AND THE DOGS, THE DAMNED, THE RUTS, THE CLASH, COCKNEY REJECTS... and American punk bands like BLACK FLAG, GERMS, ZERO BOYS, or REAGAN YOUTH. Sweet ballads for punks, drunks, and dirty Cunts."
A throwback to the heady sounds of '77, this is London...
The Bat Creeps (https://www.facebook.com/thebatcreeps) are a comic book punk rock outfit from Sheffield. My mate Simmo messaged me to say "fave new band mate" to which I replied "I was listening to them earlier and I'm playing them on this week's show (tonight, 8pm https://gpr.mixlr.com/)." It seemed rude not to get them on here too.
They've (they being Jim Connolly, Billy Sevens, Steve Yates and James McVeigh) just released a new album titled Flaccid Justice. It's "10 tracks covering hot topics such as vehicular mayhem, errant cyborgs and of course, unrequited love" and it's a whole bunch of fun.
I was originally going to highlight the singalong opener Stay Puft but I'll bow to Simmo's superior knowledge and go with his favourite track instead. This is Comic Day...
The Soda Poppers (https://www.facebook.com/the.soda.poppers) are the latest band to come rolling off the Johny Skullknuckles punk n roll conveyor belt. I've featured a couple of those other bands previously
The Soda Poppers see Jonny on guitar, backing vocals and knob twiddling. He's taking a bit of a backseat this time around ably backing up Frida The Bleeder (Vocals, Guitar, Bass), Silent Sonia (Drums) and Sticky Vikki (Organ, backing vocals).
They released a festive track a few months ago titled 'Til Christmas and now they're back with an ep called Testing A Theory - The Shape Of Things To Come. It boasts 6 songs including sprightly covers of Suffragette City and I Think We're Alone Now. You can find it here : https://johnymusic.bandcamp.com/album/testing-a-theory-the-shape-of-things-to-come
This song's a definite highlight, it's called Bad Girls Go To Hell...
You don't like the things that we do - Too bad, oh well
You don't like the things that we say - never mind, OK
You don't like the drugs that we take - Too bad, oh well
And you're always telling me that Bad Girls Go To Hell.
You don't like the things that we do
too bad, so fuck you
You don't like how much we drink
You don't like the way that we think
We think, we think you suck
You don't like the way that we live - Too bad, oh well
You don't like the things that we say - never mind but OK
You don't like anything
And you're always telling me that Bad Girls Go To Hell
So I'll see you in hell
We're good, we're good at being bad
And now they're back again with a brand new single. It's a yearning to be let go from a shitty job, a feeling I think we've all had when we need work to pay the bills but we'd really rather be doing something better instead.
xray xeroxx. New to me but maybe a one man project? Certainly a lofi garage punk project from Los Angeles and with what looks to be a debut release, a 4 track ep titled Bored And Loving It.
The music is a perfect blend of his new direction. The "Pop" sensibilities are there in the vocals and structure while also maintaining a fair amount of "Ramonescore". The lyrics are an amazing tribute to one of the best songwriters in the Ramones. Using his song titles to weave a heartfelt peon, you can tell how much Dee Dee meant to Ricky Rochelle. Stellar production as always by his writing partner Gregg Gavitt who also handles the bass duties on this one.
Besides being my friend I'm also a huge fan Of Ricky's. His solo work is constantly evolving as to what can be done within the "Pop Punk" genre. I put him in the same category as Kurt Baker. Someone who started out playing in a straight up Pop Punk band but also had the ability to write songs & music that transcended that bubble. It's rare that an artist can leave an established band and carve out a successful solo career. Ricky Rochelle is on his way to stardom.
Spacemaus are Andy (Drums/Vocals), Sarah (Bass/Vocals) & Patrick (Guitar/Vocals), a diy garage punk band from Leipzig. They introduced themselves a couple of years ago with a demo ep and they've just returned with a follow up which is fittingly titled Zwei.
The songs are of the upbeat, catchy and endearingly rough around the edges variety. Garage meets power pop and we're the winners, it's a blast.
You can get it digitally or on cassette (the cassette version, from Konglomerat Kollektiv, also includes the songs from the demo).
This is the lead song and the one that was most popular with the chatroom listeners on this week's Just Some Punk Songs show. It's called Too Cool To Say Hi...
Denn man muss verstehen
Too cool to say hi
Too cool to say hi
Too cool to say hi
Too cool to say hi
Denn man muss verstehen
Too cool to say hi
Too cool to say hi
Too cool to say hi
Too cool to say hi
The band you're getting today however are a different Sex Germs. They're from Leicester, they feature a line up of "time served fast-core stalwarts and local riff-sick rascals" and they've just released a beast of an album on Crew Cuts Records called Whiplash. You can get it on vinyl or digital : https://crewcutsrecords.limitedrun.com/products/866799-sex-germs-whiplash-lp
It's an invigorating blast of female fronted noise that sprinkles numerous hooks in amongst all the shouty angst. The song I'm highlighting is called Drive...
Shirthole are a fairly new trio from the New Jersey/New York tri state area. I've only just stumbled across them but I liked their new single and thought it needs shouting about.
Today he's back on Briefs duty as they've just released a new single. As the band are celebrating their 25th anniversary it seems fitting the single is produced by Kurt Bloch (The Fastbacks guitarist produced the very first Briefs 7" Poor And Weird back in 1999). It's the sound of a band getting back to their roots.
To promote the single, the band will be touring (things kick off with a number of English shows)...
This song sees Nix commenting "There’s nicer hospital visits and then there’s seedier ones, like where there’s cops and people withdrawing and sketchy guys in handcuffs and all that. And you’re trying to find your girlfriend and it’s 4am and you’re in an elevator. The song is along those lines. With a cool beat.” It's called Hospital Elevator...
Helle (https://www.facebook.com/helleband) are a West Yorkshire feminist punk quartet with bite. They've been around for a few years but for some reason, despite supposedly keeping my eyes and ears on the new punk music scene, they seem to have escaped my attention.
The band say the single is about girls owning their own sexuality, or as they put it "girls having a cheeky wank."
It's a powerhouse of a song, one of my favourites of the year so far. I'll certainly be catching up on their back catalogue. It's called Pornography...
The Droogettes (https://www.facebook.com/droogettes) are a Clockwork Orange themed all-girl Oi! band from Philadelphia who've been around for over a decade.
Creepy Future (https://www.facebook.com/creepyfutureband) are a trio from Dublin who feature Derek (Moutpiece, the ObjectorZ); Conzo (Female Hercules, Afterwardness) and Moose (Wild Rocket, New Gods).
They've just unleashed a debut single that's fit to burst with an intense energy that bodes well for future releases. I've not much info on them at the moment, this is just one of those updates designed to put a new band on your radar.
Bird Fist seem to be a band shrouded in mystery. Who are they? Where are they from. Fucked if I know guvnor (although one of them is in Scunthorpe Yobs) but I do know they're jolly good.
They've just released a debut album on No Front Teeth Records titled This One's For The Birds. It's female fronted, 80's inspired oi and it brings to mind the Hard Skin album Why Do Birds Suddenly Appear (https://hardskin.bandcamp.com/album/why-do-birds-suddenly-appear).
I commented "It's pop punk sensibilities with balls. Gritty and melodic, a great combination." And now they're back with more of the same in the form of a new ep titled Inauguration.
Do you like short, snappy songs or maybe you prefer something a little longer (maybe The Decline by NOFX is your idea of punk rock heaven)? Well Unicorn Dogs cater for all. There's 6 individual songs on the ep but there's also a special Inauguration: Pomp and Circumstance version, which presents the songs as a single listening experience with additional content not on the individual tracks. And if that isn't enough, there's also a couple of Bandcamp only bonus tracks.
This track is a cover of this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL1nDdWBfcc which was released in 2009 by The Raveonettes on their album In And Out Of Control. It's called Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed)...
Boys who rape should all be destroyed Boys who rape should all be destroyed
Three to one girl How can you win One horrid night You hope that it's a bad dream
They rip you to shreds Make you feel useless You'll never forget Those fuckers stay in your head
Boys who rape should all be destroyed Boys who rape should all be destroyed
They rip you to shreds Make you feel useless You'll never forget Those fuckers stay in your head
Boys who rape should all be destroyed Boys who rape should all be destroyed
Boys who rape should all be destroyed Boys who rape should all be destroyed
A cover version today of a song that was the opening track on The Mob's 1983 album Let The Tribe Increase. For those that don't know, The Mob were an English anarcho punk band from Yeovil who were active between 1979 and 1983 and who reformed in 2011.
There's a new French tribute compilation to them titled Let the tribute increase (a tribute to The Mob). It features a bunch of bands who if I'm honest I've never heard of but they pull off some decent reinterpretations. You can check the comp out here (it's available as a name your price download) : https://letthetributeincrease.bandcamp.com/album/let-the-tribute-increase-a-tribute-to-the-mob
Gutter are a hardcore punk band from Lille (https://gutterlille.bandcamp.com/). This is their hard hitting version of Another Day Another Death...
I woke up screaming from the nightmare that’s begun again / Cold tears of sweat dripping down my face / I slipped up again, I slipped up again / The radio is playing songs whirling in my head /Another day another death / Another day another death / Ice cold needle that splits my every breath / Another day, another death / The cold and frigid wind that blows through every crack / The wild and tortured dream / the straw that broke the camel’s back / We slipped up again, we slipped up again / And I wanna know why, I wanna know why / Another day another death / Another day another death /Ice cold needle that splits my every breath / Another day another death / I’m reaching out again and clutching flowers thrown in the breeze / They’re all quite meaningless and yet they mean so much to me / We slipped up again by not recalling all the pain / And I wanna know why, I wanna know why / Another day another death / Another day another death/ Ice cold needle that splits my every breath / Another day another death
They've not been overly prolific as of late, I see news of the occasional gig but their last release was 2001's Ghouls Night Out single.
But now they're back with a new single. Nothing much seems to have changed, their sound is still as powerful as ever and they still write horror themed lyrics. The only surprise is that this time around they aren't releasing at Halloween (their favourite time of the year). This time they're unleashing the single to coincide with their appearance at this weekend's Manchester Punk Festival.
One sad aspect of doing the Just Some Punk Songs show for pretty much all of the past decade is that there's been a few loyal and regular listeners who have become good friends but who've sadly passed away during that time. When I heard today's song I immediately thought of them so this update is dedicated to Bill, Nan, Stef and any other listener who's no longer with us.
Apes Of The State (https://www.facebook.com/apesofthestate) are from Lancaster, Pennsylvania and they play folk punk. It's a genre of punk music that some people seem averse to but I'm not sure why. There's plenty of great folk punk releases out there.
This is the song that had me raising a glass to fallen punk rock comrades, it's called Punk Rock Shows In Heaven...
Are there punk rock shows in heaven Are you push moshing are you crowd surfing Are the kids still hooked on heroin Or have they found a way to cope without that trash I hope you found a way to right your wrongs And that you make a cool band and write some songs And that you overthrow your government Find a way to make things work without that trash I wanna know if you’ll ever grow up Or if you’re 25 forever With that Bad Brains t-shirt on That you were wearing the day I met ya In the rehab parking lot, Central Pennsylvania Now I wear it when I miss ya You told me once It was one of the few things you had left From when you were just a kid That you never lost Now it’s one of the few things I have left To remember the time we spent Now that you’re gone I’m writing letters on your Facebook wall Some days it’s hard to believe that you’re really gone The only difference between you and me Is a breath of air some body heat But when I play our favorite CDs in the car on repeat It feels like you’re here with me So if you hear this song in heaven If you’re push moshing and you’re crowd surfing Tell the kids that are hooked on heroin We found a way down here to cope And I’m not sure I believe in heaven But if you’re somewhere and you can hear this Tell the kids that are hooked on heroin We found a way down here to cope without that
Leatherman are the Melbourne power pop quintet who I posted on here about 18 months ago https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2023/10/leatherman-telephone.html. I mentioned I could hear traces of a few bands in their sound, one of them being Thin Lizzy, and Thin Lizzy were mentioned again yesterday in the chatroom when I played today's featured song on the show.
The song is the opening track on their debut album Turn You On. The album is a collection of catchy gems, most if not all would make great singles. This band don't do filler. Harmonies, riffs, big choruses... this band excel at all of them. Let Leatherman turn you on, get the album here : https://leathermanridesfree.bandcamp.com/album/turn-you-on-3
MK ULTRAS (https://www.facebook.com/mkultrasofficial) are from Cleveland, Ohio and I first became aware of them last year when they released a Self Titled 12" ("8 tracks packed full with raw rock action. Riffs rip through like chainsaws and the bashing in of the drum kit is kin to shotgun blasts ricocheting through tin tunnels").
They're back again with a new ep titled Disband I. It says on their Bandcamp page that the 4 songs were by Clevo sk8 punk legends Disband. I tried to check out those original versions but could find no mention of them anywhere.
I was going to highlight Teenage Revolt, it's such a great and timeless sounding punk classic but then the final track on the ep lodged itself into my brain and wouldn't shake itself loose. It's a mid paced anthem with harmonies to die for. This is Pray For Us...
Cover versions of songs you loved when you were a kid can be a bit of a mixed bag. This one's one of the few that match the original. Hopefully you guys agree.
Going off the evidence of their teaser single By My Side (https://serialbowlrecords.bandcamp.com/album/by-my-side-my-world-7), this is a band that are sounding better than ever. I think I mentioned recently that there's a signature sound when it comes to music from the North East of England, there's a definite Leatherface influence on a number of melodic punk bands from that area. All those bands sound great and Diaz Brothers are up there with the best of them.
This is the flip side of the single. It was originally by mod band Secret Affair and featured on their 1980 album Behind Closed Doors. The first single from the album, it peaked at number 16 in the UK singles chart. A song about disillusionment that can accompany the experience of feeling stuck in a routine, living in the same world day after day, it's called My World...
I can feel that taste for life slipping away, And striking the lost chord I find nothing new to say Someone told me I'm all dressed with nowhere to go, I should have that sinking feeling, my head hung low,
But this is my world today My world your living in every day And this is my world today And I couldn't have it any other way In my world
Well the mind has its reasons for talking aloud But when people turn and stare, I just feel so proud The things they say won't come as any surprise In an instant they become distant cries
But this is my world today My world your living in every day And this is my world today And I couldn't have it any other way In my world, my world, my world, my world today Forever and ever, Forever and ever,
I've been waiting with bated breath for the new album by Dead Pioneers (https://www.facebook.com/dead.pioneers), the band from Denver, Colorado who released a much loved Self Titled debut back in 2023.
The new album is out today (vinyl, cd, digital) via Hassel Records (https://hasslerecords.com/) and it's titled Po$t American. I'm sure there'll be plenty of proper reviews explaining how the band deal with indigenous American culture and it's ruination/exploitation by white settlers and their descendants. This is a band with plenty to say about both modern day culture and historical atrocities.
Boasting a line up of Lee Tesche (Bass Guitar), Shane Zweygardt (Drums), Joshua Rivera (Guitar), Abe Brennan (Guitar) & Gregg Deal (Lead Vocals), this track also features a guest contribution from Petrol Girls' vocalist Ren Aldridge. It deals with manly inadequacies and the patriarchal society and it's really rather spectacular. It's called Love Language...
They're back now with a new ep which assures us that first release wasn't a fluke. It's titled The Hardest Man In Billingham and all 3 tracks are great. I played the title track on last night's Just Some Punk Songs show. Song 2 is a joyful fuck you to being told what to do at the weekend (it's a cover of this Dan Sartain banger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD-BR15taYs) and the concluding track is a very fine reimagining of a song that first appeared on Supercharger's classic 1991 Self Titled album (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tksbSnGzw4A).
A wonderful garage punk stomp, this is Sooprize Package For Mr Mineo...
I was walking with a friend of mine Doing nothing just a passin' time Got a notion that'll do you good Eat a pizza down in hollywood In the alley behind the laundromat Stab the motherfucker in the back!
Marlon Brando & Jimmy Dean Stupid clowns didn't mean a thing I don't really care if he was gay Was he cuter than Doris Day With his shoes and his tailored slacks Stab the motherfucker in the back!
The Oidz are a Leeds based egg punk quartet featuring Ben Parry (Guitar/Vocals), Luc Gibbons (Drums), Jack Devlin (Bass/Vocals) & Summer Crane (Vocals/Synth/Samples).
They've just released an ep on Barcelona label Prison Records which features "4 songs about intergalactic masturbation, incels, and ray gun toting lovers."
As I was hunting down a bit of info on them I noticed Louder Than War had already reviewed the ep so I'll just point you in that direction if you want to know more : https://louderthanwar.com/the-oidz-self-titled-review/
The band decided to call it Ten Year Hangover as a nod to the time they've been together but they admit it's taken a while to get things completed so Eleven Year Hangover would be more appropriate. Anyway, watch out for it, there's no release date as of yet but it'll be sometime this year on Randale Records.
This is a taste of what to expect. It's called Side By Side...
The song you'll find below is taken from a compilation album from Fake Sex Tape titled FST Compilation #1. It features "Various Motherfuckers From Around The World Playing Punk And Garage Music" and you can find it here : https://fakesextape.bandcamp.com/album/fst-compilation-1
It was only a couple of weeks ago when I was telling you about a new Demo from Amerol (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2025/03/amerol-security-breach.html) that I was getting all nostalgic over Perth band Cold Meat. Amerol feature vocalist Ashley Ack and guitarist K-Hole from Cold Meat so in my mind I was resigned to Cold Meat being no more.
Showcasing Ashley's superbly strident vocal delivery (she's this generation's Eve Libertine and one of my favourite current vocalists), this is the lead track. It's called Prick at the Pub...
They've released a video to accompany the title track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Tr3jboQd1M) but as I often do I'm not going with the obvious choice. I'm highlighting the one that was written by and features a guest contribution from Ryan O'Keefe and is named after a 2009 album by Irish legends Runnin' Riot. Modern day Oi doesn't get much better than this. This is Boots & Ballads....
