Quitters are a garage rock trio from Detroit, Michigan whose line up features Krystian Quint (Guitar/Vocals), Tristan Presley (Bass) & Brandon Fecteau (Drums).
They're not reinventing the wheel but I thought the first of those demo tracks was really rather good in a scuffed up kinda way. Take advantage of the free download. It's called You (Yeah)...
Bear Away (https://www.facebook.com/bearawaymusic) are the Scarborough/Leeds melodic punk quartet who I previously featured on here a couple of years whilst drawing your attention to their album A Drastic Tale Of Western Living
The song I'm sharing today features on an upcoming 7 song compilation from Sell The Heart Records titled A 7 Step Guide To Happiness. It also features the likes of Her Head's On Fire, Neckscars, Shotclock etc and you can find it here
It's about "...the prisons we build for ourselves. That’s what the ‘modern mountains’ are, these massive ugly buildings in which we spend decades of our lives making ourselves miserable to serve a purpose we don’t even believe in."
Boasting a line up of Lucas (Guitar/Vocals), Jon (Bass/Vocals) & Oliver (Drums), they have that pleasing knack of making the churning out of catchy as hell melodic punk tunes seem an easy task.
Proving my catchy as hell assertion correct, this is Sad Adult...
Do you feel like you’re running out of time?
A hollow shell with nothing left inside
and it makes you want to scream (ahhhhhh!!!)
Things get more and more complex
Fewer simple answers fewer good prospects
It's hard to sleep and even harder to dream
But I don’t wanna be a sad adult
Pining for my glory days
I don’t wanna be a sad adult
All depressed and filled with rage
Ba ba ba bada bop ba
In case you’re wondering, we’re singing
About growing old, about giving out
You gotta understand what I’m saying
You can't sell when no one’s buying
And I don’t wanna be a sad adult
Pining for my glory days
I don’t wanna be a sad adult
All depressed and filled with rage
I don’t wanna be a sad adult
clinging to the past, refusing to change
I don’t wanna be a sad adult
Closed off, stuck in my ways
Ba ba ba bada bop ba
Well, I guess this is midlife
In The Red, the debut album by Melbourne power pop n roll quintet The Prize (https://www.facebook.com/theprizemelbourne) has been out for a week now so I think it's time I highlighted a song from it.
It's not easy selecting just one, the album is a gold mine offering up copious tuneful nuggets. Ever since they released their debut ep, Wrong Side Of Town back in 2022 it's been obvious they've got that little bit of something that elevates them above their contemporaries.
According to their Facebook bio (https://www.facebook.com/p/Sadaxe-100087184339695/) "Sadaxe are fast becoming one of the ones to watch on the local punk scene. Influenced by the likes of AC/DC and Thin Lizzy just as much as NOFX and Amyl & The Sniffers, Sadaxe bring thunderous drum fills, rock n roll guitar solos and ear worm melodies."
With that in mind let me share the Manchester band's latest single.
It's a fast paced and melodic personal account of vocalist Molly's 15 year struggle trying to get help with severe pain caused by endometriosis and how in general a lot of medical research seems to be based around men meaning that women are often misdiagnosed or missed.
It's not an issue I was aware of so I guess the band are getting their message out there. This is Medical Misogyny...
Here's a life affirming little tune about embracing growing older that went down well on this week's Just Some Punk Songs show.
It's by Yorkshire-based, female-fronted garage punk band The Puncturists (https://www.facebook.com/thepuncturists). They feature a line up of Gail Townsend (Vocals), Martin Gregory (Drums), Pat Crawford (Guitar and Vocals) & Dale Farrow (Bass and Vocals) and this song is about "when someone tells you that you get to a certain age and you shouldn't try new things because you're "too old for that nonsense" tell them to stuff it! This song is Gail telling those who doubted her taking up vocals in a band at the age of 55 to stuff it!"
In my last update I wrote "When I'm looking for music to feature on here and on the show there's a few must go to UK labels that I keep my eye on. These include Grow Your Own Records, Drowning Sailor, Serial Bowl Records, Brassneck Records and Little Rocket Records. All great labels who are very reliable. If they're releasing something you can pretty much guarantee it'll be a winner."
Helping to prove my point are Grow Your Own Records who've just released a new album titled A Better World. It's a split lp featuring Philadelphia political punks The Dissidents (https://www.facebook.com/dissidentsphilly) and California anarcho punks D.O.V.E.
The album maintains this standard throughout with both bands bringing their A game.
Today I'm going to highlight a tragically all too topical song, it's called History Repeats...
Once again, blood is shed
In back alleys left for dead
As they sit back making laws
Protecting life that never lived
History repeats
Once Again
Innocent blood is shed
Once again blood is shed
Bodies pile on stolen land
Starvation, bombs and death
Ethnic cleansing not self defense
History repeats
Once Again
Innocent blood is shed
History repeats
Every day
History repeats
When I'm looking for music to feature on here and on the show there's a few must go to UK labels that I keep my eye on. These include Grow Your Own Records, Drowning Sailor, Serial Bowl Records, Brassneck Records and Little Rocket Records. All great labels who are very reliable. If they're releasing something you can pretty much guarantee it'll be a winner.
Case in point today as Little Rocket Records gear up to unleash a new album by gravel throated Birmingham punks Back Teeth. Their sound is of the gruff, melodic type that brings to mind the likes of Dauntless Elite and Iron Chic (I notice Iron Chic's Jason Lubrano is responsible for the album artwork).
Next month sees the release of a new album titled Don't Care, Didn't Ask. They've been drip feeding a few singles from it and you can find them here : https://cheapperfume.bandcamp.com/music
This is the final teaser for what will be a pretty damn special release. They say of it; “This song is a battlecry of retaliation to the epidemic of violence committed against marginalized groups by men. As a survivor of domestic abuse and sexual violence we want to fight for those who have already lost their voices or can’t for themselves. Time's up, respect our existence or expect resistance.”
It's called Dead If I Do...
Stalked in the street, held on our knees Your conquest to control me You watch too much pornography Deluded by gender supremacy Doesn’t matter if we’re nice or mean You’re punching a wall pretending it’s me You must think you can tame me My body, your choice? Bitch, please
(Chorus) Because I said so, and no means no I’m dead if I do, dead if I don’t If I don’t die by your abuses I’ll choke to death on your excuses Because I said so and no means no I’m dead if I do, dead if I don’t x2
Forced to marry, forced to carry You will never fucking own me Treat us as your property Then kill us when we try to leave Hate the housewife, hate the whore Nowhere is safe, it wasn’t before Comply or die and fuck my rights Won’t get me without a fight
(Chorus) Because I said so, and no means no I’m dead if I do, dead if I don’t If I don’t die by your abuses, I’ll choke to death on your excuses Because I said so, and no means no I’m dead if I do, dead if I don’t Sick of living with your foot on my throat Dead if I do, dead if I don’t x2
Silenced before Hear us now Dead if you do Dead if you don’t x2
(Chorus) Because I said so, and no means no I’m dead if I do, dead if I don’t If I don’t die by your abuses, I’ll choke to death on your excuses Because I said so, and no means no I’m dead if I do, dead if I don’t Sick of living with your foot on my throat Dead if I do, dead if I don’t x2
Garage rock legend Billy Childish is showing no signs of slowing down. Whenever I visit the Damaged Goods site (https://damagedgoods.co.uk/) there's usually a new release upcoming from one of the great man's many projects.
There's been many words written about Billy Childish down the years so I think all I need to add is, go listen to the song. It's called And The Band Played Johnny B. Goode...
So what do the following men all have in common? - Mikey Erg, Kurt Baker, Brad Marino, Geoff Palmer, Pavid Vermin, J Prozac, Dave Strong and Classic Pat. They were all once/still are members of well known "underground" bands. All now striving to carve out their own niche as solo artists.
Obviously his second solo outing and it shows him growing more distance from his Pop Punk/Ramonescore roots. After a few listens I'm leaning on some 80's New Wave (The Vapors, The Fixx, The Police) and major 90's Manchester (Stone Roses, Charlatans, Soup Dragons) influences. There's still some Punk anger in songs like "Self Doubt" and "Turbulent" but the growth is not only musical but lyrically as well. "Envy", "Highlight Reel" & "Can't Forget The Terror" seem like they come straight from Ricky's diary.
This second chapter in one man's journey is revelatory. You can still be angry and retrospective at the same time. All in all this is a solid piece of music. Beholden to no genre. And THAT'S what I want from music in 2025 & forward! I don't doubt for a second that this man has a piano ballad or "The Police" style reggae jam up his sleeve. Here's my favorite cut off the album "Scenederella" because it rocks & we ALL know her!
A brief history lesson. As 2013 drew to a close I decided to start a blog. The first 2 songs I posted (on December 31st) were Alright by Radioactivity and I'll Be Gone by Oblivians (https://justsomepunksongs.blogspot.com/2013/). Not a bad way to kick things off!
I mention that because today I'm highlighting a song by a band from Memphis called Laundry Bats. They feature Greg Cartwright and Jack Yarber from Oblivians (and Reigning Sound & Compulsive Gamblers). Rounding out the trio is Abe White (Manateees/True Sons of Thunder).
They've an album out on Hozac Records and if you enjoy your rock n roll music straight outta the garage (and supplemented with a healthy helping of brass) then it'll be right up your street. It's titled Hangin On A String and you can find it here : https://hozacrecords.bandcamp.com/album/hangin-on-a-string
It's a hazard of putting the Just Some Punk Songs show together that songs occasionally get stuck in your head. Todays update features a catchy as hell tune that's currently rattling round in my brain.
Loose Lips are a rock n roll trio from Melbourne. They boast one hell of a line up; Josh Hardy (Guitar/ Vocals; the Chats and the Unknowns), Ethan Stahl (Bass/ Vocals; Chubby and the Gang, the Prize, Street Sweeper) and Nadine Muller (Drums/ Vocals; the Prize).
They announced themselves in fine style last year with a debut ep and they return today with a debut full album. The album's called Last Laugh and it's available on various vinyl variants and as a digital download : https://staylooselips2.bandcamp.com/album/last-laugh
It's a delight, just check out the title track for example, it's a crunchy power pop winner. I played it on a recent show and I've also featured Too Late To Call and Don't Mess Me 'Round. The album's full of should be hits though so I'll highlight a different track today.
Big riffs, bigger melodies, this is Out Of Time...
